Can't Celebrate Anywhere Else

I paid off my mortgage this morning.

Life is shit in general, the world and the climate are going to hell in a fast car, I work in an industry that is historically poorly paid and most of my colleagues will never own a property, let alone pay it off. And amongst my friends, two are going through nasty divorces and another is likely being made redundant very soon.

Celebrating in 'public' would be a bit crass, so in an anonymous forum, can I just say whoop whoop? 🍾

Congrats op!

I took out my mortgage 13 years ago in the midst of awful divorce proceedings, on a 30 year term. I'm hoping to have it paid off by the end of 2025 after slogging my guts out to do so. I can't bloody wait!

Congratulations 🎊 what a fabulous achievement, especially valued in this climate.
Looking forward to being in your position in a few years 🤞

Massive congratulations 👏. I paid mine off in July 2023 and the relief is huge. No more scrimping in the last few days of the month. I put half of the amount we used to pay in mortgage into savings. The other half goes towards better living all the time and holiday fund.

Huge congratulations OP. We sold our house last year and are about to buy a property which will leave us Mortgage free. It's an amazing feeling.

I'm sure, like us, you've gone without in order to reach this point, and now you can enjoy your extra cash ( but please put most of it towards a pension!)

We haven't had a holiday for years, so we'll be celebrating by booking somewhere nice. Hope you enjoy your freedom similarly 🥂 🥂🥂

Congratulations - and it will feel even better next month when your mortgage doesn’t leave your account

Thank you to everyone for your lovely messages!

To answer some q's, I live alone in a one bed - it was a 25 year term. My mortgage payments were quite small as this part of the world was comparatively cheap at the time - now worth about 2.5 times what I paid for it, but that's still a low increase compared to some areas!

Family know that I've finished paying, but none live locally to go out for a meal etc.

Due to it being an endowment mortgage (I know, I know, but at the time it was sold as not being the 'bad' kind), I had saved up a good chunk of money in case there was a shortfall from the endowment fund. That's going into my pension, and I'm going to set up monthly standing orders for the same amount as the mortgage payments into savings etc. Might buy some premium bonds, and see if I can win a million GrinHmm

Well done! It is a relief, but you're right not something you can mention IRL.
(And as a total aside, something last week reminded me of the description 'spiky hate potato' so it's nice serendipity for me to see your name crop up. Grin)

I enjoyed the original hedgehog thread https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/mumsnet_classics/4374246-How-do-you-catch-a-hedgehog?page=1 and pinched it as a username - I can't claim to have coined it!

How do you catch a hedgehog? | Mumsnet

This prickly butthead is Jumanji, she/he visits every night to eat all the cat food and, if you're stupid enough to be sitting outside with your shoes...
