Whats your favorite restaurant in Chinatown (London)?

We always used to go to Wong Kei, where the service was rough and ready but the food was brilliant, but apparently their food hygiene rating is appalling. Not going back! Where have you been in Chinatown in London that you would recommend? Just looking for the usual Chinese menu, not dim sum or anything. Thanks!

We used to love Joy King Lau but I think the ownership might have changed recently and it's not quite the same.

Been to Beijing Dumpling recently and loved it but Imperial China (right next door) is also good for the classic Chinatown experience.

StuckintheRutt · 17/01/2024 22:46

Same op!!.
Having said that ddh said it was good??

Is it really bad... We decided not to go back a while ago. Sad because their chili source is phenomenal.

StuckintheRutt · 17/01/2024 22:48

Just checked and it's 1...

Did you know the building used to be a renowned wig makers...

Joy King Lau for me too but haven’t been since change of ownership

had good food at Four Seasons on Gerrard St (but their food hygiene is 3 which isn’t brilliant either)

Ooh, London Chinatown is a haven for delicious food! It's hard to pick just one favorite, but I recently went to a place called feier-restaurant.co.uk that was an absolute revelation.

They do these incredible hand-pulled noodles that are like nothing I've ever had before - the texture is unreal! Soup dumplings that burst with flavor in your mouth, and the most melt-in-your-mouth pork buns. It's a real gem, tucked away a bit but definitely worth seeking out. So many options, so little time!

TheBirdintheCave · 11/04/2024 09:19

One of the Four Seasons is rated 5 for hygiene. I can't remember which one though! It's on the same road as the Wong Kei.

Edit:: 23, Wardour Street. Last inspection was in March this year so should still be excellent!

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 11/04/2024 09:26

I have to disagree with PP. Joy King Lau is still outstanding, we ate there just a few weeks ago.

TonTonMacoute · 11/04/2024 09:28

Dumplings Legend on Gerrard Street is our current favourite.

PuddleglumtheMarshWiggle · 11/04/2024 09:51

We used to love Wong Kei! The waiters were rude, would seat you with anyone, shout at you to hurry up and leave and they still only take cash.
But their won ton noodle soup was delicious!
I was walking through Chinatown last night on the way to Soho.
The place that we have started going to now is the New China restaurant. Lovely food and good helpings. The hygiene rating is 5.

StuckintheRutt · 11/04/2024 11:04

Wonkie was also so cheap, we all ate very well for very little.

BestMug · 11/04/2024 11:15

We love Ermei on Lisle Street- it is Sichuan so very spicy. Lovely food and staff, 5/5 hygiene rating.

TheRainItRaineth · 11/04/2024 11:23

I went to Joy King Lau last year after the change in ownership and was not at all impressed. But maybe it has improved since then.

I like Dumplings Legend a lot. The one next door is pretty good too. It's red on the outside and I have forgotten what it's called. And the iced tea at Gerrard's Corner is phenomenal. I've only had dim sum there, though, nothing else.

mouche202 · 11/04/2024 11:25

Another vote for Beijing Dumpling

Oh good, we haven't been for a while either. Need to again soon.

CurlewKate · 11/04/2024 14:48

The Golden Dragon. I love how big and busy it is and how so many Chinese people use it. Amazing Dim Sum....

Babymamaroon · 11/04/2024 20:54

Came on to say Won Kei!

Onesipmore · 11/04/2024 20:57

Lido on Gerard St been visiting for 20 years. Then on to Opium cocktail bar, only identifiable by a green door, for drinks

StuckintheRutt · 11/04/2024 21:26

@Onesipmore do you knock or just go in. I've only been once about 3 am years ago

Librarybooker · 11/04/2024 22:19

Watching with interest as not been recently.

Never really found a trolley service place to match those when we lived in US.

Onesipmore · 12/04/2024 07:55

@StuckintheRutt Its the green door next to HSBC and there is usually a man on the door. To be honest I booked so it was all quite easy. But yes you can turn up and asked to be let in.We went to the bar on the top floor which has a sort of Speakeasy vibe. The Lemon Drop cocktail very good :)

TheWayTheLightFalls · 12/04/2024 07:59

Mr Wu. DH refuses to come with me now. Rude waiters, fights over being charged for tap water - but it’s all part of the experience. There are some very good places, especially the hand-pulled noodle bars, but sometimes you just need a bit of cheap, cheerful insanity.

VenetiaHallisWellPosh · 12/04/2024 09:19

I used to go to Mr Wu as a starving student 30 years ago!

There was one on the corner my Chinese aunt used to take us...Gerrard's Corner! Apparently it's gone downhill now, which is a shame. My aunt used to go to Chinatown to pick up her specialty ingredients though she doesn't now because they are available everywhere. This was back in the late 90s.

I really must go back and try a few places. I haven't been for years.

Also our favourite!

Anyone remember the Kowloon? It sadly turned into a bakery...

Ouchiebum · 18/04/2024 14:07

Last time I went to wong kei two years ago my daughter got food poisoning and woke me at 2am in a puddle of poop. Not going back!
