Whats your favorite restaurant in Chinatown (London)?

We always used to go to Wong Kei, where the service was rough and ready but the food was brilliant, but apparently their food hygiene rating is appalling. Not going back! Where have you been in Chinatown in London that you would recommend? Just looking for the usual Chinese menu, not dim sum or anything. Thanks!

I still miss Chuen Chen Ku for dim sum on the corner of Wardour st and Gerrard St, it was there for years, doing old fashioned trolley style dim sum. When we first went, in the early 80s none of the staff spoke much English, they showed you what was on their trolley and you said yes or no.
It closed in around 2010, AFAICR, (probably due to rent increases) and by then the staff were all the 2nd generation and spoke perfect English. But the food remained absolutely authentic, chickens' feet, suckling pig, ice-cold baby squid, duck tongues, turnip cake and of course exquisite dumplings.
Dumplings Legend is ok but i did like the Hong Kong style trolleys. (There's only one or two left even in Hong Kong these days.)

We take the kids to Imperial China. Kid friendly, big space, they love the koi carp in the entrance, all the usual face dishes. Would like to branch out so reading with interest!

Does it need to be in Chinatown? We used to like Plum Valley on Gerrard Street, but haven't been in a while.

More recently, we've been going to Din Tai Fung (a couple locations, but not in Chinatown) https://dintaifung-uk.com and Dumpling Shack in Old Spitalfields Market.

We've also had very good (although expensive) dim sum at Yauatcha in Soho - their prawn and bean curd cheung fun alone is worth a trip.

And I like Xi'An Impressions right up near Emirate Stadium

Hope you find something good!

Yauatcha or Hakkasan are amazing and a cut above anything in Chinatown and not far away.

I also like Plum Valley but the menu is not the traditional standard UK Chinese restaurant fare.

Leongs Legend is one of the original Chinatown restaurants and is excellent but it is Taiwanese food.

I don’t really have a current favourite of the more traditional style Chinese restaurants in Chinatown, all the golden oldies have closed or been taken over. Royal China Club in Marylebone and Four Seasons in Queensway are very good, long-standing restaurants so I guess their Chinatown branches are also good.

Still stand by Imperial China - it’s in Chinatown, does all the classic dishes, went recently and it was great. It’s big so usually has space and always full of Chinese people which I am reassured by.

Thank you for the tips. We ended up going to some random one as it was so busy. Didn't rate it much though. Tiny place and tables so close together. Seats were cubes. Not many dishes and just so cramped. Did find a lovely bakery and found the infamous pandan cakes, which were amazing 😍

ChristmasPudd1990 · 03/01/2025 23:13

Edit. It was Hong Kong buffet. Should have read the reviews 😔

The Golden Dragon. Huge, busy, noisy and delicious dim sum.

FiloPasty · 04/01/2025 11:06

Go to Royal China on Baker Street delicious.

New Young Chen is great and cheap - and always full of Chinese people (a good sign)
