Can you still jump/hop?

Random I know! I can't do either. Not sure if it's an age thing, or that I've got plantar fasciitis, but even on a good day, I just can't convince my body to do it 😁

Yes, 58. But lower back pain and dodgy knees mean standing up is getting harder, as is putting on socks.

mdinbc · 16/01/2024 23:54

Like Clary, I do yoga which keeps me flexible and builds strength. At 62 I can skip, hop, do some back bends.

MissGroves · 16/01/2024 23:55

Just tried - I can do both but my boobs and my bladder didn't appreciate it! 🤣

Wearegettingfedup · 16/01/2024 23:59

Haven’t attempted a handstand for many years…think I would end up with a head/ back injury TBH !

girljulian · 17/01/2024 00:00

Yes — but I think there’s some kind of hyper mobility in my family. I am a size 14 or so and when I did Pilates, was always very good at it and the instructor couldn’t quite believe how good I was at everything. This sounds like a humblebrag but it made me feel like she thought she was witnessing a hippo ballerina like from Fantasia because everyone else in the class was skinny. I can still lie on my front and touch my toes to the top of my head, and lift one leg up over my head when sitting upright, but so can my size 20 66 year old mother.

VikingLady · 17/01/2024 00:01

Yes, but I do need to hold my boobs when I do it (they're massive).

I can do the sitting on the floor/getting up thing too. Although I'm in general very unfit and pretty fat.

EBearhug · 17/01/2024 00:09

50s. I can hop and jump. I can do a handstand. I can almost do a plough (bit too much stomach for it to be easy, as proved in class last night.) I can get down without knees, but I need one knee to get up. I haven't tried a forward roll, and I'm not trying today, as I don't feel 100%. I tried trampolining recently and could still do seatdrops, front drops, backdrops, star jumps, straddle jumps. I gave up trampolining around the time I lost my nerve at doing somersaults and biranis, in case I broke my neck, so I didn't try them.

RichardsGear · 17/01/2024 00:12

I've just had to get out of bed to check I can still hop and I can but without much height off the floor; jumping was slightly better. The poor cats were saucer eyed and obviously wondering wtf was going on! 😆I'm early 50s and a bit hefty.

This is a good illustration of the sit to stand thing.

Multipleexclamationmarks · 17/01/2024 06:41

Just had a new knee last week so can barely walk let alone hop or jump. I could until recently though. I can usually do a forward roll, I work in reception class so fairly physical. Can't sit up off the floor without rolling around like an overturned tortoise.

Copen · 17/01/2024 06:58

I'm 54, do no exercise apart from walking, and can hop and jump no problem. Absolutely no chance of getting up and down though - but I can't sit cross-legged anyway, it;s too painful.

Lifestooshort71 · 17/01/2024 06:58

I'm nearly 72 and can't hop or jump. My GS persuaded me to jog down the road with him but I couldn't seem to get any lift so it was like a duck waddling. He kindly said it was like watching one of those fast walking races. I get up off the floor by turning on to all fours, pushing my bum up in the air and on to my toes and unfolding to a stand. I've had breast cancer treatment and a mastectomy and take devil pills that have given me osteoporosis so I need to be careful....all that is an excuse as I couldn't jump, run or hop at 69. If you don't use it......

dudsville · 17/01/2024 07:08

I love these threads that get us all skipping, hopping, sitting and trying to stand again!

I can skip hop and sit. I can't get back up and I tennis to source a you tube video that can help me relearn this skill. Anyone got a link? I'm off to google.

Aparecium · 16/01/2024 22:37

This time last year I couldn't, but since then I've lost 2.5 stone and now I can. Not elegantly, not high, not far and not for long, but I can go, skip and jump again. I'm 58.

Can't get up without putting my hands or knees on the floor, though.

I am about at this level too.
I am roughly your age.

I remember the time me and two friends were on a beach. I suddenly said to them, lets run across the beach!

It was a pitiful sight from all of us.
I didnt know at what point I suddenly couldnt do very well, something that used to be simple.

Justsellingthestamps · 17/01/2024 07:17

I'm 52 and can hop, skip, jump, and do the floor sitting thing.
I usually stand on one leg whilst brushing my teeth or waiting for the kettle to boil as I read somewhere it's good to keep your balance as you get older.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 17/01/2024 07:28

If you've got PF, you've got tears in your 'spring' system. That's why you can't jump or hop - it's not done by just willing yourself into the air.

That's annoying, I need the side of my hip and thought I'd get away with it. Still, 1 point lost isn't too bad (ignoring the fact that I'm right at the bottom of the reference age group and am probably only going to get worse).

As a super fat person I worked my way up to jumping - I did CrossFit so every time there was skipping I had to do standing calf raises. I had to work on most.of.me before I could manage to safely jump just a little in height and land safely. Before that one standing two footed jump pit me in the osteopath's clinic because it jammed up my hips. So thanks to hypermobility even if I can jump,.I shouldn't.
Hopping - I had forgotten that I ever could!

Shodan · 17/01/2024 08:06

I can hop, jump, cartwheel etc freely at 55 - but I do karate, so use some of these things regularly (not the cartwheels. That's just for showing off 😁)

I can sit without using knees/hands, but getting back up requires rolling slightly onto one hip. That I put down to the fact that I have a stone or two in weight to lose (and most of it in the bottom and thighs- no wonder I can sink down so easily!)

What I do know is that if I go even a couple of weeks without training, it's almost like I have to start at the beginning again in terms of my flexibility, which is annoying.

notanothernana · 17/01/2024 09:30

Somethingsnappy · 16/01/2024 22:33

Can anyone sit down on the floor without your knees, or any part of your arms or hands touching the floor, and then stand back up again, same rules of touching? You're supposed to be ultra fit and flexible if you can. My children can. I can sit down, but can't get back up again.

I can hop and jump though. (I'm 46).

How. Just how!! I can get down but have never been able to get my body forward enough to get the momentum.

EvilElsa · 17/01/2024 09:32

Yes! I have a broken ankle so have been hopping everywhere! Do box jumps (when I'm not broken) and still have a lot of flexibility. Definitely have to work harder at maintaining it though (I'm 42)

garlictwist · 17/01/2024 09:39

swingtowin · 16/01/2024 22:45

I'm 60 but I can still hop, jump, do handstands and cartwheels but I've always been fairly flexible - headstands though I can't!

Interesting. I am extremely inflexible, can't touch my toes or do any kind of gym but I've always been weirdly good at headstands!

Ratfinkstinkypink · 17/01/2024 09:45

I can hop, jump, the standing on one leg things and I am bloody amazed to discover I can do the sit/rise thing without using hands. I am 60 and do no regular exercise other than a good daily walk (but being a foster carer to a non mobile almost 4 year old may just help a bit, I still lift/carry him as we don't have a hoist yet)

KevinDeBrioche · 17/01/2024 09:47

Yes, I also do a lot of yoga though which is why.

theveryhungrybum · 17/01/2024 09:49

50 and yes, but I take tap dancing classes and go to the gym so maybe that helps. In my head I can cartwheel, but I'm sensible enough to not actually try it.
