How are your new years resolutions going?

SmurfTERF · 15/01/2024 14:26

Back in November I started a thread about my new approach to NYRs, taking them month-by-month.

My resolution for January was to eat more pears which has been going really well - 12 pears consumed so far this month 😂

I'm also trying to live by the "Two Minute" and "Worst First" rules.
Two Minute = If a job will take you less than two minutes, do it now, don't put it off.
Worst First = Do your worst/most dreaded tasks first to get them out of the way.

Just wondering how everyone else's NYRs were going?

Page 2 | I know its early but - what are your resolutions for 2024? I'm taking a different approach next year. | Mumsnet

I know its early but I'm already thinking about my new years resolution(s) for 2024. I have a year-long work-based resolution which is to say "no" to...

Still sober! :)

But still eating too many carbs. I was hoping cutting out alcohol and chocolate will help me lose weight, but I seem to be making up the calories in pasta, rice and bread. Next task, I suppose :)

megletthesecond · 15/01/2024 14:31

Good actually. I have to do a small tidy (niche annoying little things like under cupboards, shoe drawer etc) every day and read a few pages of a book.
Got a snazzy habit tracker off etsy which is really helping.

How are your new years resolutions going?
SmurfTERF · 15/01/2024 14:37

Fabulous!

Love the habit tracker.

I'm accidentally sober too @LegoDeathTrap
DP wants to lose 1.5 stone so we've cut out our weekend wine and takeaway habit for about six months. I didn't intend to do dry January and/or beyond but I'm being a good supportive wife!

OK I think.
Mine is to look less of a state all the time.

I've made a hair appointment.
I've tinted my eyebrows and lashes.
I've been doing my nails. Just shaping, buffing and shining them but they look nicer.
I've thrown out loads of ancient, ugly clothes and bought a few new things.
I've been drinking more water and putting on moisturiser.

Nestofwalnuts · 15/01/2024 14:43

Did slip once on DJ but have been dry 14/15 days so not too worried about that. Have walked 7/14 days so only 50% on that but better than none, given the weather.

I finally got tested for a medical issue which I've put off for a while and so treatment for that is beginning soon.

Started Pilates with a really great teacher and enjoying it so far.

On 4th book of the year so far and plan to read 50 books a year (but not on that thread as I find it too complicated to have to explain every plot and bold every title!)

DH and I try to have a date every week now DC have left home. Went to a gig the other night, have theatre, cinema and exhibition tickets booked, and a night away in a hotel at the end of the month.

Booked to visit an old school friend in spring. One of our crowd died last year and we realised we have to stop putting off the reunions and have them. Been saying we'll get together for years so really looking forward to this one.

SmurfTERF · 15/01/2024 14:49

@AhBiscuits Wow, your post is really invigorating. You've made me just text my hairdresser and get booked it. I bet you feel great!

@Nestofwalnuts You're absolutely killing it, good job!!

I tend to add one new thing a week that I would like to change or do.

So far I've stuck to putting cash in two cash wallet folders I bought online.

I have a section for car,Xmas, birthdays, and then emergency stash (it got depleted with vets and car bills last year so needs to build back up again)

So far I'm a week ahead which I'm happy about

Drink two pints of water every day. I've missed one day

Take my make up off when I get in from work and oil/moisturise my skin straight away
Missed one night where I fell asleep on the sofa

Take my medication at the right time day and evening -I bought a seven day holder that you can take each individual day out of so if I'm running late I grab it and then take at the earliest time possible.

Get up earlier and go to bed earlier

Re set my kitchen/lounge and bathroom every night inc putting robo hoover on,cleaning kitchen and bathroom sides, quick clean and bleach of the loo, putting recycling out every night, and doing a load of washing every other morning and putting it away straight away as it's dried rather than pile it up in the utility room

I realised I've been procrastinating far too much since September so doing all these things don't take long and I then don't get overwhelmed on a daily basis of what needs doing

Next in my list is walking at least 2 mornings a week early before work.

SmurfTERF · 15/01/2024 15:07

@dothehokeycokey Wow, looks like you're doing great!

rookiemere · 15/01/2024 17:40

Mine is to not say sorry so much - I'm a perennial apologist even for things like weather which are totally outside of my control.

I'm not sure if I am saying it less, but when I do say it I tend to say oh I'm not meant to be saying that, so I feel I'm heading in vaguely the right direction.

CatalogueOnVinylFlooring · 15/01/2024 17:49

I'm trying to set intentions rather than resolutions. So far in Jan I have - found a new window cleaner, burnt the Christmas cardboard, booked a haircut, done yoga every other day, bought an office chair, booked for the council to remove an old sofa and fridge and bought paint to paint my office and the living room!

SmurfTERF · 15/01/2024 17:50

@rookiemere Fabulous, well done you. A few years ago I read this book. Some of what she talks about is absolute bollocks but I really heeded some points - like you I stopped saying "Sorry" when I wasn't actually sorry. And I stopped saying "I think" when didn't think something, I knew it. And I stopped head tilting 😆

OP posts:
rookiemere · 15/01/2024 17:54

@SmurfTERF I might add "I think " in for February on the no speak hit list, although I think I'm not as guilty of that Wink.

EmmaStone · 15/01/2024 17:59

I've not been doing terribly well on my Yoga with Adriene 30 days of yoga, missing the whole of last week due to work commitments, and not making the time, but trying to catch up.

I am trying to heavily cut back on ultra processed foods, and curb my very sweet tooth, which is going much better. I've taken lunch into work every day I've been in (my default was almost always a supermarket meal deal), and hardly had any sweet treats since New Year (a couple of leftover Xmas chocolates only). I'm hoping it has a side effect of helping me lose a few pounds before a holiday at Easter, and to help that along, I seem to be doing 16:8 fasting on most days, tracking calories, and trying to fit in a bit more exercise (I was already fairly active, so I'm not finding too much additional time at the moment). I try to listen to lots of Zoe podcasts or podcasts with Tim Spector as a guest, it helps my resolve!

GingerLiberalFeminist · 15/01/2024 18:21

So I planned to cycle to work on my three days in. It's been too damn cold!

I also planned to stop vaping which my DH keeps reminding me about, but I consider it synonymous with cycling - if I'm cycling I hate vaping.

Other NY ambitions are to run a 5k in May and cycle L2B in June, but they're a while away!

So basically failing 😂

UsernameTaken76 · 15/01/2024 18:30

Mines all about getting healthier and fitter. I’ve been to the gym 3x a week and ticked off today after work to keep going. I’ve also started using Joe Wicks on YouTube on other weekdays to keep myself moving rather than just sitting at my desk.

Ive cut coffee down to one black coffee a day and Coke Zero has been a weekly treat rather than daily. I’ve replaced them with water (lots of water) and fruit or herbal tea So more flavoured water basically.

I’ve got into a habit of reading a non digital book in the evening rather than doom scrolling.

Last one has been using guided meditation to help me sleep after seeing it recommended on here. It’s really working and my sleep is much better.

Nope, not failing. The weather is conspiring against you.

And there are still about 350 days left this year for the 5K and the L2B cycle so be easy on yourself, plenty of time to accomplish them

@UsernameTaken76 Great work!! What kinds of things are you doing at the gym? My work schedule has changed so my Tuesday HIIT class has gone out of the window until March. I miss it so much 😥

OP posts:
UsernameTaken76 · 15/01/2024 18:56

@SmurfTERF The class schedules can be such a pain! I’ve got back into weight/resistance training that I last did 5+ years ago but today I changed my warm up from cross trainer to my first try of the Stairmaster. It wasn’t as scary as I thought but it was hard workout!!

MeMyBooksAndMyCats · 15/01/2024 19:05

I wanted to read 100 books currently on my 5th so that's great.

Sober for the year, broke once already. Blush

De-cluttering & staying on top of the house is going okay too though! Currently have 5 black bin bags to take to the charity shops so not going to beat myself up over breaking one!

StrudelStrider · 15/01/2024 19:18

I've walked every day, read every day, decluttered every day, taken a vitamin every day and lifted weights every (other) day. Loving being on a streak. I like hearing what others are doing too, I'm always up for stacking habits too.

5thCommandment · 15/01/2024 19:34

Going well, toning up nicely. Still exercising every day, protein shakes and eggs daily, cut out all sweets, biscuits, choc etc etc. on a calorie deficit approach and feeling good 💪🏻
Hard sometimes to resist but I just neck a shake and feel full again.

HowDoYouSolveAProblemLikeMyRear · 15/01/2024 19:40

I aimed

  1. to spend 1000 hours outside with my children in 2024. I encouraged this including about 35 hours in January and we're up to 22 hours so far which I'm really pleased about

  2. to finish the process I started last year of making my hoarder-ly house orderly and functional, spring clean it and get into a cleaning routine, and to start the process of decorating it. I've made some more steady progress with the decluttering/tidying, so the only really embarrassing room downstairs is now the utility room. And I've deep cleaned the bathroom which I now feel relaxed in!

  3. to continue the process I began in Autumn of getting to a healthy weight (2 stone lost so far and 4 stone to go). Disappointingly no progress so far, but January so far has been dominated by recovering from illness and major piece of work, so I envisage getting back to making an effort on this in February to give myself a realistic chance of sticking to it.

SmurfTERF · 18/01/2024 11:02

@HowDoYouSolveAProblemLikeMyRear Wow, that's amazing weight loss pre-Christmas, well done!

I love hearing everyone's positive stories of NYRs Smile

Excellent work OP!

I'm still consciously cutting back on UPFs, but haven't managed to be quite as controlled as I was in January. But still better than I was, and thinking more consciously about what I eat. Have reintroduced some of my sugar, and I think I'm a bit better around my sugar addiction, but a bit weak when there are peanut M&Ms in the vicinity 😂. Haven't lost loads of weight since the New Year, but have lost a few pounds, and am not unhappy in my skin. Exercise going well, although missed the first half of February as was laid low with Covid.
