Should I go to A and E? I hate wasting time

Doormouse46 · 13/01/2024 18:06

Just to say I hate wasting time especially when A and E will be busy on the weekend. For the past 3 days, I have had sickness and diarrhoea. At first I thought it was a bug, then food poisoning then maybe Norovirus. I don’t want to go to the doctors if I’m going to make more people sick.

However, I noticed the vomiting/diarrhoea comes after I eat or drink only. I even tried to have a few strawberries this morning and within 20 minutes I vomited them back up.

The same this afternoon, I ate some toast following the brat method and it came straight back up. It’s the same with anything I drink even water. I’m so dehydrated my lips are chapped and I’m pale as a ghost.

The other thing I’ve noticed is my poo (sorry) is sort of black and thick now and smells horrendous even though I’ve not eaten for 3 days now. I’ve lost weight but that’s to be expected. I have a cracking headache which I think is from dehydration.

i really don’t know what to do. I’ve tried an anti sickness band, didn’t work- I’ve tried not eating which does work but I even bring up water.

I don’t know what to do. I feel sort of like I’m dying (sounds dramatic I know). I called my mum for advice as she’s a GP receptionist and she basically told me to keep out and keep drinking water best I can.

i just feel so helpless and can’t see an end to it. I’d appreciate any advice!

glad you went in
usually best to go with your own instincts op @Doormouse46 and others

it is dangerous to ask opinions on an internet forum in this scenario

Clipperyacht79 · 14/01/2024 10:46

Sorry you are so ill but I am so glad that you are safely in hospital op and received treatment promptly. I hope you have been able to sleep and feel better very soon.

As an aside and just out of interest - speaking to the medics on this thread - practically speaking how do you travel to A & E with severe vomiting and diarrhoea? I mean how do you manage noxious runny substances emerging from your head and your arse while travelling? And how do they manage it in an ambulance?

I live in a very rural area and this always worries me!

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 14/01/2024 10:48

I've only just seen this thread, and I now know that you have been seen and that you know what is wrong (which sounds serious but at least it is being treated now). I was going to say that my dad had the black smelly poo when he had colon cancer (not suggesting you have the same, but it was a concern until I'd caught up with the latest details) so this is definitely not something to be ignored. I hope you're beginning to improve now!

Sue2024 · 14/01/2024 10:51

Definitely do not go to A & E, you will pass your bug to everybody else there. Your sysmptoms can be managed at home, have a look online for tips on rehydrating etc. Once you can keep water down Dioralyte is very good for rehydrating and rebalancing the electrolytes.
Hope you feel better soon.

VolvoFan · 14/01/2024 10:52

@Sue2024 she has peritonitis and she is in hospital being treated.

Sick bowls, inco pads, blankets. The same as every bodily fluid or severe injury. Then they clean inside the vehicle.

@Sue2024 You could not be more wrong. You could try, but you would not succeed.

Agree, or maybe delete the health thread altogether but I guess some posters do offer genuine advice and op find it a distraction when they are feeling ill

Willmafrockfit · 14/01/2024 11:06

and this wasnt even the health thread @HappyHamsters

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT 1: TO ANYONE READING THIS THREAD IN FUTURE BLACK TARRY POO THAT SMELLS BAD IS CALLED MELENA. IT IS LIKELY TO BE A SYMPTOM OF SOMETHING VERY SERIOUS LIKE INTESTINAL BLEEDING. YOU NEED MEDICAL ATTENTION NOT A CAN OF COKE.

Public service announcement 2: The OP has gone to hospital and is being treated for sepsis and a burst stomach ulcer.

reposting for the benefit of @Sue2024 who needs it

Hope any of the posters giving completely the wrong advice learn from this and step away from any similar threads in the future! You are not medically trained, please remember that!

why would you think it’s ever a good idea to tell someone to not go to a&e?
You’ve not even bothered to reader the OP’s updates!

Thank goodness she didn’t listen to you eh!

Probably the kind of person who would recommend a good walk for a broken leg. But if it were them suffering, then that would be different, of course.

Or give advice like this poster (who obviously hasn’t bothered reading either of the OP’s updates from hospital!!)

*Ring 111 get ooh gp appointment.

Next stop the shop, get a full can of full fat cola. Put in a glass with a spoon of sugar. Drink it of a spoon. It will stop sickness.*

Hi all, I’m at A and E being treated for internal bleeding and suspected sepsis. My heart rate was 48 and is usually in the 90’s as I’m quite unfit (and a bit overweight). Blood pressure very low. Temp is really low.

thanks for all your advice- I just want to say that the person who said (and I see this a lot of these type of threads) that if you’re well enough to post on Mumsnet then you’re not ill enough for hospital- it simply isn’t true and quite dangerous to say!

I agree that was a silly comment. I've only just read this thread and am glad you're being taken care of. Good luck and get well soon xx

Willmafrockfit · 14/01/2024 11:32

there are plenty of websites to ask the question, nhs for instance, would have answered the question rather than come on to Chat on this forum

Absolutely but posters will still ask these type of questions just like the OP did and might listen to the wrong advice! Thankfully the OP is now having the care she desperately needs.
