i got a message that visibility has been temporarily suspended on that flight. Is that right or have they just landed?

For some reason. Porto Allegro in Brazil seems to be having issues.

A plane almost touched down - at 100 foot but then up again.

It's thundery showers there.

Landed safely - suffered a tail strike apparently. Engineers going to have a look.

It was on an X/Twitter account that I follow because I am such an armchair nerdy noodle.

Plane went north, burned fuel for a while so it could land safely otherwise too heavy, and then came back to Dublin.

I'd be very interested to know what is happening on the flight returning to LHR just now. They've got out to the Atlantic before turning back. Surely if it was an emergency they'd have landed in Dublin or something?

Apparently it's a technical issue and they can't fly across the ocean. They're now flying in circles to burn fuel before landing. Think I'd be a bit nervous as a passenger on that flight.

That was the exact flight I was watching! I would be super anxious if I was a passengers I wonder how long they will burn fuel for?

If it was something to be nervous about it would have gone to somewhere like Dublin.

I haven't looked at the details but if it is "technical" one possibility is it's an almost trivial system failure that has absolutely no bearing on safety but means it no longer has all the equipment plus the back-ups legally needed to cross the ocean on one of the Atlantic tracks...

Having now looked at Flightradar what is maybe interesting is the aircraft isn't holding at one of the normal Heathrow holds....

What I find surprising tonight is the apparent lack of flights into Heathrow. Can't hear any flights, starting or landing, so went onto FR, one flight from Vienna, then nothing for 20 minutes before a flight from Doha.

It is usually a bit quieter in the evenings, but not that quiet.

Can't explain any apparent lull but yes it is quiet..only TAP on the approach ATM.

The on-line arrivals board across the whole airport looks normal for a Saturday night, no signs of any disruption that I can see, and it looks the late evening departures are going on time..

There was another flight that left Heathrow this morning and had to turn back. It was going to Prague. It had a 7700 call but I don't know how to find any more info.

No idea, we may well never know, but the probability is (based on stats over the years) it was a medical problem...

To be frank I think, albeit unknowingly, there's almost literally an element of ambulance chasing going on with this fixation on the 7700 squawks.

Most technical problems (similar to what likely happened to the AA flight last night) are v minor, get resolved in slow time and the aircraft retains it's original squawk.

There are some circumstances a pilot would go straight to 7700 without prompting by ATC (e.g. decompression) but otherwise it often only gets used if ATC ask for it, and that’s often done because it gives them more visibility (on radar).
