How often do you change/upgrade your phone?

OP posts:
arethereanyleftatall · 11/01/2024 21:51

If it breaks. So I can't really remember but I think I've had this one over ten years. Dunno. Not something I think about.

SweetPetrichor · 11/01/2024 21:52

When the model stops being supported with updates.

Waitingfor5pm · 11/01/2024 21:53

every 3-4 years usually, although my last phone broke just inside the 2 year warranty and they sent me a brand new one to replace it, the latest model!

qazxc · 11/01/2024 21:54

Whenever it breaks.or I get a free upgrade with my contract. Having said that my last upgrade is still sitting unused in it's b9x for about a year because I haven't been bothered to change over and find a protective case for it, so I may sell it and wait for the next upgrade. In average once every 3 or 4 years.

RadioGaGaRadioGooGoo · 11/01/2024 21:58

Every time I'm due an upgrade so every 3 year

DrMadelineMaxwell · 11/01/2024 21:58

When they break or start to become unreliable/glitchy. My current one is 5 years old. Isn't getting updates (since 2019) but is still going strong.

My tablet and my kindle are both now ten years old and also going strong.

Dooglydog · 11/01/2024 22:00

I charge mine overnight and its charges a bit when I use apple CarPlay.

my previous phone was an iPhone 11 Pro, and I upgraded to iPhone 15 pro max when it came out. My buy mine outright and have a cheap contract.

Kwasi · 11/01/2024 22:00

When it no longer functions well. Usually when I can't get to the end of my work day on a full charge.

angelcake20 · 11/01/2024 22:05

Every two years. Partly habit from the old contract days and partly so the kids have hand-me-downs that are not too old.

Tollo · 11/01/2024 22:07

Just bought a new one recently after 8 years as it was restarting on its own and very sluggish, I use a giffgaff sim so no upgrades, so I use my phone until it’s unusable and then buy another one

seeitthroughmyeyes · 11/01/2024 22:08

Every 4 or so years when my phone breaks

laertn · 11/01/2024 22:09

Every 5 years. I've just upgraded and the battery didn't last a full day out, and I was running out of space for apps etc.

BobnLen · 11/01/2024 22:12

It's been every 4 years, I buy a new iPhone, I always buy outright so no upgrade, Adult DS has my old phone to finish it off. I bought a new one about three months ago so hopefully that's it for the next four years.

evtheria · 11/01/2024 22:13

When it breaks, or apps stop working on it due to OS being too old, etc.
In the past 9 years I've gone from an iPhone 6, (broke) to the oldest SE (too old), to a 13 just over a year ago.
Felt v excited with my 'new' phone, but it has to last me at least another 3 years!

Cotswoldbee · 11/01/2024 22:14

Not often.
Had this one for nearly 3-years as I was moving house and needed to get a smartphone so I could access emails and the web during the move.
Prior to that, I think I had owned my previous phone for 5-years or so but only bought that one as I thought it would be handy to have a phone with a camera built in. It didn't have web access.

PAYG and not worried about features, just want a cheap, robust phone.

Singleandproud · 11/01/2024 23:56

When it breaks.

If you like a new or different phone regularly then Nokia offer a subscription service where you can swap your phone every month. They make sure it's clean and send it to someone else on the service and you can choose a different one.

Nokia have taken a very interesting route with smart phones, offering fixit kits so you can carry out minor repairs yourself, being very on it with sustainability and recycled products from the packaging to the phones themselves.

Globules · 11/01/2024 23:58

When the old one starts running slowly.

About every 3-4 years.

Emily1583 · 11/01/2024 23:59

Every three or four years. I just keep my contract down to a minimum fee and buy a second hand phone until it slows down to a death. A phone is a phone to me.

IamaPopof · 12/01/2024 00:01

Every two years as I want to get some value from it. I have just sold my old I phone for 300 and that has gone towards my new one.

SinnerBoy · 12/01/2024 05:21

I'm glad I'm not the only one to keep them until they die! I've been called a bit of a sad case, as I don't have an iphone and don't get a new phone every year. The current one is coming up to 5 years old and I only got that because the previous one died.

I got my first smartphone (the one prior to the current one) because they didn't have any Sony Ericsson flip tops, like the one before that...

JenniferJupiterVenusandMars · 12/01/2024 05:31

Until it dies.

SM4713 · 12/01/2024 05:39

I've never bought one as part of a plan, always separate and often refurbished.
Current phone- 2yrs
Previous one- 4yrs till screen cracked for the 2nd time
Previous one- about 8yrs till the flippy part broke off

SinnerBoy · 12/01/2024 05:46

Yeah, my flippy bit broke off after about 8 years, too!

doodlepants · 12/01/2024 06:12

About every 5 years.

LetMeOut2021 · 12/01/2024 06:13

When it breaks beyond economic repair, then spend about £200 on one from Facebook marketplace. I have a sim only contract for about £20 pcm, think spending an enormous amount on a phone on finance is ludicrous.
