How often do you change/upgrade your phone?

OP posts:
Caspianberg · 12/01/2024 06:21

About 5 years. Always iPhone. I buy outright, then just get a cheap
sim only package. Usually still sell phone after 5 ish years so get some of cost back
still.

Passingthethyme · 12/01/2024 06:26

When I break it or it's so old it's an embarrassment

TerfTalking · 12/01/2024 06:27

When it goes wrong. I don’t ever get a phone on contract, sim only, I buy reconditioned iPhones on Amazon which are always like new. Usually a model or two back.

Every two years. Partly habit from the old contract days and partly so the kids have hand-me-downs that are not too old.

Same here. Works out better for us that I change every two years and one of the children get my old one.

3 - 4 years when they start to lose function or I've dropped the bloody thing and cracked the screen. Having a clear out yesterday, opened a rarely touched drawer and realised I've got half a dozen or more old phones and chargers and other bits of techy stuff with wires. Looked at it, grimaced, and shut drawer quickly. How do I dispose of them? Serious question.

catelynjane · 12/01/2024 06:39

Whenever my contract is up for renewal - normally every 2-3 years.

Dacadactyl · 12/01/2024 06:41

When it stops working. I think I've had a total of 5 phones in my 38 years (and I've only paid for 3 of them as the previous 2 were given to me by friends who'd upgraded)

Redglitter · 12/01/2024 06:41

When I can get a free upgrade, so every 2 years

Xmastime2023 · 12/01/2024 06:44

The last 2 about every 4 years.

daffodilandtulip · 12/01/2024 06:46

Until the battery doesn't last a full day out, as used for work. I buy reconditioned ones from Amazon or music magpie, and we all have smarty plans for £5-£9 a month.

ErnestCelendine · 12/01/2024 06:48

I change them when they die. My current one is nearly 3 years and cost £160. It's working as well as it did when I unboxed it. Giff gaff sim of £6 a month.

The DC have phone contracts for £10 a month over 2 years (includes phone and sim). DS excited as just got first upgrade after 2 years. Would be cheaper to get handset outright but didn't have the money upfront for that.

Aposterhasnoname · 12/01/2024 06:51

Every two years cos I’m a tech whore.

VisionsOfSplendour · 12/01/2024 06:52

When it nk longer works properly which reading the replies above seems to be about the norm

Sirzy · 12/01/2024 06:54

When the battery stops lasting all day. I had the last one for 5 years before I gave in and replaced it.

megletthesecond · 12/01/2024 06:56

About every four years. Basically once my phone starts to really slow down.
I buy a basic Samsung (£160ish) on a SIM only contract.

WorriedMillie · 12/01/2024 06:56

OH gives me his old phone when he upgrades (every 18-24m). I then give my phone to my Mum.

I imagine when DD is a bit older, she’ll end up with his hand me downs and I’ll end up with hers (as I’m not bothered about phones)
and my poor mum won’t get a look in 🤣

speakout · 12/01/2024 06:56

Only when I need to.
I get my DDs hand me down phones, I currently have some type of iphone- it's maybe 5 years old, I won't get a new one until I really have to.

Phones are very hard on the environment, manufacture produces huge amounts of co2, and many metals and rare minerals are used to make the screen and circuitry.
The extraction of the metals causes huge local pollution, cynide and mercury and often dreadful conditions for miners.
I realise that I am part of the problem in having a mobile phone too, but hopefully minimising my impact just a little.

FatOaf · 12/01/2024 07:13

When the old one becomes too slow to use. About every 5-7 years. But the replacement will be second-hand anyway.

romdowa · 12/01/2024 07:18

Usually when the battery starts to go and not hold a charge or if it breaks. I miss the days of being able to just buy a new battery

Caspianberg · 12/01/2024 07:24

@romdowa - you can easily get new batteries. We sent an old iPhone off to apple directly and they had offer where the new battery was only £30. Then gave the older phone to in laws.

AlanJohnsonsBeemer · 12/01/2024 07:24

About every 2 years, as I’m really clumsy & break them. I get second hand now and have a VOXI sim but I was exactly the same when I had a contract and new phones.

Heatherbell1978 · 12/01/2024 07:25

For years I've changed every 2 to 3 years, out of habit mainly but this year I think I'll try to keep phone as long as possible. DS will get a phone later this year for his birthday so weighing up whether to give him my current one and get myself a new one or get him a second hand one somewhere.

Toomuch44 · 12/01/2024 08:25

Probably every five years, different reasons. Changed from the old brick type, DH finding a really good offer including a phone so just as good as PAYG on that phone. Last phone stopped working right at end of two year contact.

Ethelswith · 12/01/2024 08:34

I had a basic Nokia from the 90s until my first smartphone in 2016, which I am still using.

I will only replace it if it becomes unreliable in some way

I've a Samsung and any phone shop I've asked have told me it's not worth changing the battery.
