How often do you change/upgrade your phone?

I charge mine overnight and its charges a bit when I use apple CarPlay.

my previous phone was an iPhone 11 Pro, and I upgraded to iPhone 15 pro max when it came out. My buy mine outright and have a cheap contract.

Change, not charge.

For me it's when the battery isn't good enough to last me a full day. Usually 4/5 years.

acatcalledjohn · 12/01/2024 14:51

Mine's now just over 3 years old. Used a lot, but doing well. Intend to keep it for a while yet.

Generally when I need one I wait for the new model to be released and then buy the slightly older one at a better price. Apart from the iPhone 12 Pro, which was better value than the 11. Go figure.

Haha no idea why I wrote about when I charge it. I knew it said change because that’s also in my post. Who fucking knows 😂

I just did at Christmas. I had an iPhone 7 which was becoming very glitchy and I believe Apple were no longer updating the 7 from 2023.

I now have a pre-loved 12. It's a bit too big, tbh.

We never buy brand new electronics in our house to reduce the environmental impact.

Moier · 12/01/2024 16:23

I may be being a bit dense but I don't really understand what a phone upgrade is, does it mean you just get a new phone and a new contract? How does it differ from just getting a new phone?

Basically you have a contract years which covers the cost of a new phone and data/calls.

once the phone is paid for, say after 2 years, you get a new one - the “free upgrade” and continue paying for that new phone and your calls.

if you’re paying £50 a month £10 will be your call data, £40 will be paying off the phone.

it’s not “free” as it’s included in the cost of your contract. But people don’t seem to grasp that.

Thank you for explaining, is it just a fancy way of saying you are getting a new phone, presumably once you've finished your contract you can get a new one anywhere you want or is there a loyalty discount?

Presumably it’s the phone company’s taking advantage of people’s inertia. Contract auto renews, customer sees the bill stays the same, and bonus they get a free phone!

so they don’t actually look into the cost breakdown.

KCSIE · 12/01/2024 19:28

When it breaks or when it stops being supported by updates, whichever happens first.

My mum has recently changed from one of the big networks to a smaller one. She asked her old network to price match but they wouldn’t even though she had been a customer for 20ish years. So she left to move to a network that runs off them anyway!

Appleofmyeye2023 · 12/01/2024 19:34

Just replaced my iPhone 7 . It was bought as refurbished one in 2018
i only upgraded as I was gifted an Apple Watch and we found that iPhone 7 didn’t support it. 🤦‍♀️
otherwise it was doing just fine and I’d have kept it going still.
my new phone is a refurbished one too…but then I like a bargain …I’m just selling my old phone as well…

iPads seem to last ages, I have a mini that is 10 years old and still working, I don't use it now but I see Cex will pay £20 for it people must still buy them that old. If they are really old though they don't get security updates any more.

my first iPad lasted 7 years till updates couldn’t be sorted. I then replaced amd in as little as 3 years had to be replaced again due to the charging port not working. Took to apple shop and they told me it couldn’t be repaired. I have no idea why it stopped but it was clearly loose as you could wiggle it to get charge in. I was so gob smacked that apple didn’t have a fix for it.
so now have new one. Bloody hope this one last the 7 years plus again .

DahliaMacNamara · 12/01/2024 19:50

Not until it stops working.

JanuaryJunipers · 12/01/2024 19:50

Until it dies.

Ruminate2much · 13/01/2024 02:19

Slight digression, but so many iPhone users on this thread. I'm an Android girl, and always have been! iPhones are like another world! Out of curiosity, those of you who've had both, which do you rate more highly?
As indicated in my post up thread, I've had a phone last 9 years, and a phone last a month due to a bathing incident! I'm prone to getting phones wet, and am very outdoorsy, do hoping to get a waterproof rugged Nokia android (the XR20) next, which should last a few years. I'm assuming an iPhone equivalent (if there is one) would be much more expensive? I like the look of iPhones though...

PurpleSky300 · 13/01/2024 02:37

I replaced mine annually for a long time until I realised it was effectively pointless and not really an 'upgrade' of any kind. Now, usually every two years.

RantyAnty · 13/01/2024 02:45

Not that often. I've had this one about 5 years. Will buy a new one this year.

GoalHitter2024 · 13/01/2024 02:48

We haven't had contract phones for years now. Total rip off imo.

We buy new phones about every two years...but usually Amazon renewed. Half the price of new, pristine condition, usually get one down from the latest model (Samsung). Then cheapy sim only contracts.

sleepysleepytired · 13/01/2024 02:50

Until it breaks, 4-5 years I think. I've been able to recently replace my phone with a spare old work iPhone so didn't have to buy one. Just have a sim only deal for £15 per month.

I stopped getting iPhones when they removed the headphone socket and I must say I miss them. I have had three or four android mobiles since and they all have really buggy software and lack a few things I used to like, like the ability to silence all calls except my partner. So I miss the stability and features of the iPhone. But: I have never spent more than a couple of hundred on one, maybe the more expensive ones have better software.

KievLoverTwo · 13/01/2024 04:51

When they break or become impossibly slow.

Used to be an iPhone fangirl but when they took the earphone socket away and made everyone use stupid, easy to lose, expensive earphones, I refused to buy one out of disgust.

Myhnabird · 13/01/2024 05:37

DH and I both have 8 year old LG's (android). I think we should have upgraded a year ago. One of them can't use data when away from home and the other can't make calls. We'll pick up new-to-us phones next time we're in the UK.

Ladyj84 · 13/01/2024 05:48

When my contract gives me my upgrade lol

What kind of android phone doesn't allow you to choose contacts that override the do not disturb?
