Chapter books to read to six year old

I find so many of the chapter books im reading to DS are not very good- we have just finished Dermot L Leary's Toto the Nonja Cat, which never really got going.
My children enjoyed Roald Dahl books, Enid Blyton, The Boy Who Grew Dragons, Rabbit and Bear series- does anyone have any suggestions of things that their children have enjoyed, please? The funnier the better!

Also, the Chris Mould illustrated version of The Iron Man.

I just came across a copy of Roverandom is DS's room. It's by JRR Tolkien and a really beautiful, adventurous story for that age group.
