I find so many of the chapter books im reading to DS are not very good- we have just finished Dermot L Leary's Toto the Nonja Cat, which never really got going.
My children enjoyed Roald Dahl books, Enid Blyton, The Boy Who Grew Dragons, Rabbit and Bear series- does anyone have any suggestions of things that their children have enjoyed, please? The funnier the better!

mine liked 13 story tree house books, Dave pigeon, captain underpants, Daisy and the trouble with….

The 13 Storey Treehouse series

Tom Gates series

Adventure Mice series

Currently enjoying The christmasaurus by Tom Fletcher

Personally, I'd avoid anything by David Walliams

I always try to choose books that are a couple of years above their own reading level/age to read to them.
Filtering for 'humour', Anne Fine has been popular at that age in our house. Bill's New Frock and Flour Babies in particular. Pratchett's Bromeliad trilogy was also much enjoyed.
Without the filter, Stig Of The Dump, Gobbolino The Witches Cat, Podkin One Ear, The Christmas Pig, and a selection of Dick King-Smith have also been winners.

Mine loved Horrid Henry

My DS enjoyed:

The Worst Witch
Beasts of Olympus
Harry and the Wrinkles
Artemis Fowl (might be a bit young for that one)
The Boy Who Grew Dragons
Warlock Watson
The Accidental Prime Minister

BrieAndChilli · 11/01/2024 21:02

Narnia books?

StinkerTroll · 11/01/2024 21:03

Elys dolan writes hilarious books for that age range (particularly knighthood for beginners)

whereimfrom · 11/01/2024 21:09

My 6 yo has the full Rhoal Dahl collection which she loves.
& we've read Harry Potter & the philosophers stone

LightSwerve · 11/01/2024 21:09

Dick King Smith books are good at this age.

SanPellegrini · 11/01/2024 21:14

Mine love the new Jacqueline Wilson version of the magic faraway tree and we are currently reading the Thames and tide club. All recommended by bookbairn on instagram!

WGACA · 11/01/2024 21:25

Horrid Henry

I agree with the Narnia books for sure. Emil and the detectives was wonderful:

Also, the 'I was there' books, if you like history:

Dick King Smith's Sophie books:

The Little house on the Prairie series is excellent, and of course traditional fairy tales when you find good versions of them.

Have a look here. I love each book on this list:

Emil and the Detectives by Erich Kästner

For 5 - 12 year olds. Book Review

Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf - short stories rather than a chapter book but DS loved them at 5/6.

We also liked the magic faraway away tree by Enid Blyton

Gliblet · 11/01/2024 21:38

Magic Faraway Tree, the How To Train Your Dragon series, the Moomins books, the Stinkbomb and Ketchup Face series (evil badgers and heroic ninja librarians!).

My 6 year old just finished the Hodgeheg by Dick King-Smith, she devoured it! We are also reading the Jacqueline Wilson Christmas Faraway Tree book (which is excellent) after they adored us reading them the Enid Blyton ones.

Not sure if it’s a bit old for them but what about the Fudge books by Judy Blume?

ProcrastinatingWithVipers · 11/01/2024 22:14

Mine loved Harry Potter at that age. A simple chapter a night meant they lasted ages. Just the first few books as it gets quite dark later.

They also adored Rolad Dahl, and quite quickly wanted to read themselves, so they could read ahead.

Nagado · 12/01/2024 01:07

Uncle by JP Martin. It’s got a bit of a cult following and is a flipping wonderful series of books.

Imagine the Magic Faraway Tree if it had been written by Roald Dahl and add in a very rich elephant who wears a purple velvet smoking jacket. It was my absolute favourite as a child.

NameChange30 · 12/01/2024 01:41

Following with interest.
I thought the Toto books were ok.
Recently DS enjoyed Alien in the Jam Factory.

Kathy34 · 12/01/2024 03:34

Beverly Cleary the Ramona books.

Morred · 12/01/2024 21:14

Jill Tomlinson is good - not just the owl
who was afraid of the dark.
Worst Witch? Just William?
CS Lewis is about right for that age as well.

Esgaroth · 12/01/2024 21:28

My 6 year old is riveted by the How to Train Your Dragon books at the moment. They are really good fun with plenty of child-level humour and great illustrations. It's just right for him.

PurpleWhirple · 12/01/2024 21:34

The fudge stories by Judy Blume are hilarious. My boys loved them at that age

Winifredduck · 12/01/2024 21:37

How to train your dragon series, Adventure mice, first Harry potter, the lion the witch and the wardrobe and magicians nephew, dave pigeon series, Charlie changes into a chicken series, Mr penguin series, Julius zebra series, Mr gumm series, pugs of the frozen North and other books by Phillip reeve, pippi longstocking.
My boys enjoyed all of the above at that age.
