Surprising conversions to Islam among British males - Seeking insights

LemonadeMaid99 · 11/01/2024 19:14

I chanced upon a tweet showcasing clips of white working class British males who have embraced Islam, urging others to do the same. A few rapping about their passion for Islam.

It is puzzling considering that half a century ago, such individuals would likely have exhibited stronger tendencies towards racism and would have been resistant to adopting the Muslim faith, maybe even rap for that matter.

Do we have any inkling as to what may be unfolding here? Furthermore, does any data exist regarding the proportion of conversions and the respective backgrounds of race, class, and gender?

My queries are made with intellectual curiosity, and I mean no disrespect or desire to be converted.

Maybe they're seeing the real Islam now instead of what the media wants them to see and feel attracted towards it, especially with Muslims worldwide sharing their religion and daily lives on social media.

I’m sure there are plenty of genuine converts who made Muslim friends, learned about Islam and were inspired by a genuine faith in god. However I think there are also plenty of men doing it for different reasons. My impression (formed from TikTok and gossip about people I tangentially know - not any kind of expertise!) is that some of these men are quite misogynist. They are the working class equivalent of “passport bros” (men who move to e.g. Thailand to work online as digital nomads and surround themselves with women they perceive to be “higher quality” I.e. beautiful and submissive without expectations of being treated well.) The ones who convert to Islam / develop an obsession with an immigrant community in the UK don’t typically have the kind of career you can do online, so they’re trying to get the same experience in the UK. They think that they’re entering a social group which will bring them into contact with women who will not challenge them. I sincerely doubt they’re correct and I expect they’ll probably stop in a few years when they realise that women with e.g. Pakistani heritage in the UK are as educated and opinionated as any other women living here.

I imagine for a range of reasons. Some will like the brotherhood aspect, some the boundaries that keep you on the straight and narrow, some the idea of strong family/community values, the answer to questions that they perhaps never had before.

Don't know about Islam but if was to be turned I'd love to be Sikh. There are bits of religion that really click. So why not Islam? It's quite a peaceful and gentle religion going by the Muslims I know IRL which is quite a few ( all men).

Oh my days. Classist claptrap.
"...white working class British males," mkay... "such individuals" ‐what are you talking about!?

Portakalkedi · 11/01/2024 19:53

will likely get deleted, but possibly because they see the muslim culture as man-dominant, and the women submissive?

Poverty which is a source of great hardship and despair often correlates with lower cognitive abilities and chaos, dysfunction etct. There seems to be an increasing number of directionlsss young men in society, so it becomes reasonable to comprehend how they mint be susceptible to recriutment. Its understandable that when young men in these Kings of circumstances are presented with a seemingly comprehensive solution AND the promise of Brotherhood👑, they may find it difficult to resist!

In all honesty I think the absence of religion in our society has created an unfulfilled void, one that remains unaddressed... waiting.....to be filled.

The manner of dress and beard growth seems out of sync with British fashion and it might be more appropriate if they were to embrace Christianity, given the country's rich history with it..but not a shocker.

In terms of rap...a lot of young people like it, it's very catchy.

Omg I'm sorry I had a red wine. Mint is might. I love mints.

@TheMotherSide You have a knack for finding fascinating hidden meanings in my words!

@PencilsInSpace sadly I had that exact thought too. That individual really is so despicable, he defies adequate description.

Yes I’d agree with this, I’ve seen lives completely turned around because of Islam as it gives a strong sense of direction and promotes a lot of positive values.

I’ve also known of a guy who got completely brainwashed by Wahhabism and that obviously didn’t end so well; there’s big differences between the sects.

Absolutely! Implying that the WC are more inclined to racism is insulting.

Guavafish1 · 11/01/2024 20:21

Islam provides discipline and structured religion. I think that applies to men who feel lost like the Army. It gives one purpose and structure.

It's also a way for understanding the social aspect of the world.

The western media narrative of Islam is false and islamophobic.

DecisionFatigue · 11/01/2024 20:22

I think it’s interesting (in a positive way) that we’re now seeing the first generation of white British born-Muslims where both parents are white British converts.

Yep, this in a nutshell.

Albotronic · 28/01/2024 13:44

The western guys converting to islam are looking for gangs, women to be subjected to them and theyre usually western rejects.

MarshaMarshaMarshmellow · 28/01/2024 13:49

Happens a lot in prison, apparently. It's advantageous to join Muslim gangs there. Maybe these guys came to it that way, and then stayed?

LadyGooGaa · 06/04/2024 19:14

Because it legitimises being dominant, aggressive, treating women like slaves and justifies violence. What a great deal for a man!

HelloMiss · 06/04/2024 19:42

Zombie thread

Noraton · 06/04/2024 20:13

@LadyGooGaa Islamophobic much?

LadyGooGaa · 06/04/2024 20:41

That’s right. Keep saying it instead of actually knowing what the reality is for the victims of radical Islam and the millions of women in Islamic countries being abused, subjugated and having their basic human rights ignored. Caveat: I live in a country with more Muslims than you’ll ever know. I know Muslim women, my business partner is Muslim. So accuse me all you like, you literally have no idea what you’re taking about.
By the way, I bet you’ve been antisemitic this week without even being aware of it.

HelloMiss · 06/04/2024 20:43

Bet YOU have too!

LadyGooGaa · 06/04/2024 20:43

Oh come on, your own post!
