Surprising conversions to Islam among British males - Seeking insights

LemonadeMaid99 · 11/01/2024 19:14

I chanced upon a tweet showcasing clips of white working class British males who have embraced Islam, urging others to do the same. A few rapping about their passion for Islam.

It is puzzling considering that half a century ago, such individuals would likely have exhibited stronger tendencies towards racism and would have been resistant to adopting the Muslim faith, maybe even rap for that matter.

Do we have any inkling as to what may be unfolding here? Furthermore, does any data exist regarding the proportion of conversions and the respective backgrounds of race, class, and gender?

My queries are made with intellectual curiosity, and I mean no disrespect or desire to be converted.

I’m Jewish. So no. Im currently working with an organisation that infiltrates places where women and girls are in danger of being cut, or married (under Islamic law obvs) under age 12, and rescuing gay males from potential honour killings IN THE UK. So no, not Islamophobic, realistic. In any case what I think isn’t relevant as more than 25% of the world is now Islam and increasing by 70% a year so…..

@LadyGooGaa you seem to have a very skewed view of Islam. I'd suggest you get out of your little pigeon hole and go meet a variety of actual Muslims before forming such extreme opinions.

FWIW, for me Islam is not even a religion. It's my way of life and living with humility and compassion for others draws me closer to my faith everyday. Maybe that is the appeal for more and more people who are choosing Islam for themselves.

I live in the Middle East 90% of the time. I’m literally surrounded by Muslims.

I'm white, British,Christian

Surrounded by Muslim males at work and find it all quite interesting tbh

@LadyGooGaa if you hate Muslims so much, why are you living in a Muslim majority country. I feel sorry for them, having you to deal with.

@LadyGooGaa🙄

@LadyGooGaa what about misogyny in the Halacha??
I grew up in a Jewish household, where my job was to prepare large meals with my mother while the menfolk presided over the rituals.
You are seriously deluded. Our community is xenophobic, racist, transphobic, homophobic and cult like. Also genital mutilation exists in Judaism.....

Anyway back to the original thread. Sorry OP

I’m sure there are plenty of genuine converts who made Muslim friends, learned about Islam and were inspired by a genuine faith in god. However I think there are also plenty of men doing it for different reasons. My impression (formed from TikTok and gossip about people I tangentially know - not any kind of expertise!) is that some of these men are quite misogynist. They are the working class equivalent of “passport bros” (men who move to e.g. Thailand to work online as digital nomads and surround themselves with women they perceive to be “higher quality” I.e. beautiful and submissive without expectations of being treated well.) The ones who convert to Islam / develop an obsession with an immigrant community in the UK don’t typically have the kind of career you can do online, so they’re trying to get the same experience in the UK. They think that they’re entering a social group which will bring them into contact with women who will not challenge them. I sincerely doubt they’re correct and I expect they’ll probably stop in a few years when they realise that women with e.g. Pakistani heritage in the UK are as educated and opinionated as any other women living here.

Or indeed, vast numbers of Indian and Pakistani women living in those countries who are educated, articulate and opinionated!

Poverty which is a source of great hardship and despair often correlates with lower cognitive abilities and chaos, dysfunction etct. There seems to be an increasing number of directionlsss young men in society, so it becomes reasonable to comprehend how they mint be susceptible to recriutment. Its understandable that when young men in these Kings of circumstances are presented with a seemingly comprehensive solution AND the promise of Brotherhood👑, they may find it difficult to resist!

In all honesty I think the absence of religion in our society has created an unfulfilled void, one that remains unaddressed... waiting.....to be filled.

The manner of dress and beard growth seems out of sync with British fashion and it might be more appropriate if they were to embrace Christianity, given the country's rich history with it..but not a shocker.

In terms of rap...a lot of young people like it, it's very catchy.

Poverty correlates with lower cognitive abilities…really how clueless 🤯 you obviously live in a middle/upper class bubble and havent twigged that wealthy people give the illusion of competence because money smooths over issues, they would appear less put together and chaotic in the same situation. Generational wealth and comfort is not earned from cognitive ability its a gift from grandparents and mummy and daddy. And poverty is extremely hard to dig yourself out of, society and power structures are made to abuse the less privileged. If you were over average intelligence you would have questioned that just because your school and your privileged peers have told you that you are better, maybe you just lucked out…and you are definitely rude and condescending.
