Top Madonna songs on Radio 2 - anyone else listened to this?

Great countdown, I really enjoyed it and wasn't too surprised at No 1. I'm now watching her 85 tour on Youtube - I was a massive fan but she's not actually a very good singer or dancer when you look back. That said she was incredibly cool and inspiring for a young teen, there was nobody like her - not in my small town world anyway. It's sad that she's felt the need to change so much over the years.

Top 3 Madonna songs? Mine would be Crazy for You, Like a Prayer and Into the Groove in no particular order.

I switched it on to find Hanky Panky playing and lasted about 30 seconds, she can't sing.

Thelootllama · 10/01/2024 19:51

I do think it's funny now watching back footage of her in the 80s. I always thought she was amazing and cool, but like you said now she wasn't the best singer or the most attractive. I suppose she was the first of her kind and the prototype for the current female popstar.

I still think her Like a Prayer album is great. As a 9YO child, I didn't really listen to in much depth. But now songs like Till Death Do Us Part and Oh Father hit a completely different nerve.

What was number 1 BTW? I didn't hear the countdown

AuntieJoyce · 10/01/2024 20:00

Haven’t caught this, but would expect Vogue to be number one. My favourite Madonna track is give it 2 me. Which is odd really as I was a massive fan back in the day but don’t really like her later stuff

PollyIndia · 10/01/2024 20:02

She was a total innovator, and is the soundtrack to my life, at least up to confessions on a dancefloor. I saw her live in Paris on her celebration tour, and it was amazing. One of the things she said that stuck with me is ‘the most controversial thing I’ve done is to stick around.’ She wasn’t the best singer or dancer but she’s super smart and hard working, and charismatic. I’m not into her crazy surgeries but I respect her for always trying to be relevant and innovative, and not wheeling out the same stuff she has for 40 years. Love her.

Open your heart
Like a prayer
Borderline

These always make me happy to hear

LunaNorth · 10/01/2024 20:37

Ray of Light
Crazy For You
Papa Don’t Preach
True Blue
Borderline

Bluearrivabus · 10/01/2024 20:44

Open your heart, Rain, Rescue Me - I think… Into the Groove & Crazy for You also up there. I love the whole Ray of Light album, I quite liked Music but hated Confessions and everything since.
So many good songs - I’m 48 so grew up with her, massive influence in my life.

GellerYeller · 10/01/2024 20:48

I just can’t get my teens to appreciate how much of an impact she had when she first appeared in the 1980s. It usually results in me being told she owes a debt to Stevie Nicks/Patti Smith/Joan Jett/Dolly/Cher. It’s a strange thing to have a 14 year old speak of these women in such reverential tones 😂
She has a point but ‘Like a Prayer’? Iconic.

Violetparis · 10/01/2024 20:50

My top 3 are Crazy For You, Like A Prayer and Papa Don't Preach.

Pootle40 · 10/01/2024 20:52

She's a better singer than people give her credit for and a good songwriter too.

My favourites are

Live to tell
Crazy for You
Like a Prayer

LutonBeds · 10/01/2024 20:52

I’ll Remember
You’ll See
Gambler

MerryMidwinter · 10/01/2024 21:01

I loved Gambler! I think I’ve got a terrible cover version as last time I looked it wasn’t on iTunes.

I loved her first album and she looked great in those days, I used to dress like her when I was 15.
Tbh I didn't realy like anything after that album, Like A Virgin was good in places.
Favourite songs
Lucky Star
Holiday
Hung Up

NooNakedJacuzziness · 10/01/2024 21:04

Into the Groove
Dress You Up

I was given Rebel Life by Mary Gabriel about her for Christmas - it's a fascinating read so far. She is so driven and single minded, uses people to get what she wants and a lot of people she knew say she's rude and ungrateful but I can't put it down. She was so important to us young girls in the 80s.

ToriTheStoryteller · 10/01/2024 21:05

I listened to the last part of it. I'd thought it was going to be easy to list my favourites beforehand but honestly I sang along word for word to the whole top 10 which made me realise just how influential she was to me growing up in the 80s and 90s.

Madonna, Janet Jackson and Gloria Estafan were my absolute idols.😍

ToriTheStoryteller · 10/01/2024 21:08

Forgot to actually list my faves!
Material World
Papa Don't Preach.
Dear Jessie.

GellerYeller · 10/01/2024 21:10

@ToriTheStoryteller yes, Gloria! Loved her.
Live To Tell
Dear Jesse
Sorry
Rain
Causing A Commotion
Im a fan of the ‘slightly lesser played on radio’ songs it seems!
DH LOVED Evita. Couldn’t get the kids to see the appeal of that either 😊

Kwasi · 10/01/2024 21:22

I listened to it. The only top 10 track that surprised me was Ray of Light. I expected either Like a Virgin or Like a Prayer to be top.

I remember her voice changing around Crazy For You. She's never been an amazing singer but more of a performer.

Top 3 for me:
Borderline
Like a Virgin
Express Yourself

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 10/01/2024 21:28

Like a prayer
Borderline
Vogue

dunodonny · 10/01/2024 21:31

True blue
Like a virgin

Don't lie anything she did beyond the early nineties

MerryMidwinter · 10/01/2024 21:33

@NooNakedJacuzziness that looks great, added to my reading list

This thread is bringing back great memories of hanging around my sister’s room with her records and True Blue poster. She and her friend dressed me up as Madonna, lace gloves and all, I was about six.

Can I have 4?
