Best cheap place to live in UK?

We are considering moving and buying a house elsewhere in the UK. But we don't have much ,money.
Where is the best place to live in the UK where houses are still relatively cheap?

County Durham will have plenty of houses in that budget. Be careful which bits as some parts are rough but it's handy for the coast, country and cities.

@Beezknees yep- I suggested Mansfield as it's my original home town so I know the streets well but I agree with chesterfield too for similar reasons.

@Beezknees sorry! Bits of it are actually very nice! Like biggish place I suppose. My parents live there and find it very good in terms of amenities, transport links, etc.

Haha, I don't mind. I can't afford to live anywhere posh! It ticks all the boxes for me.

I grew up in Herefordshire, family still live there and would just add that any 3-4 bedroom house under £200k would not be in any location you want to live or suitable for an NHS worker commute. Rightmove bears me out on this.

Dumfries. And you could look at other towns in Dumfries & Galloway too.

alltootired · 10/01/2024 21:44

@Dymaxion I agree that is a gorgeous house.

North east - Sunderland and parts of Gateshead.

Great places to live imo

NE Lincolnshire

Somerset has 3-4 beds for 200k and under in Taunton and Yeovil where there are hospitals. Also Weston Super mare (Bristol commutable?)

Close-by: Quantock Hills, Exmoor, Blackdown and Devon beaches.

I work here and there's 100s of new homes going up, easy commute to Edinburgh, nice small town feel, seems plenty going on in community.

To be fair, it wouldn't be an easy commute to the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh unless her DH works hours that means he avoids rush hour on the bypass! It would be ok for St Johns at Livingston or Forth Valley hospital, or even Dunfermline.

Vettrianofan · 12/01/2024 14:33

Most parts of the Central Belt are cheap. Plenty scenery too.

Pricey!

Under £200,000 for a 3-4 bedroom house, ideally quite a bit less.
I know it will not be in a posh area anywhere for that. Right next to posh areas sounds ideal.

Northern Ireland here, we bought our large 4 bed detached for £127,000 with large garden front and rear. 15 minutes from Belfast, good local schools (both Catholic and integrated in the immediate town and other good schools within ten mins walk.

BodyKeepingScore · 12/01/2024 14:39

Oh and to add, my DP works for the NHS, there are three large hospitals within 15-20 mins drive in each direction from our house

NotFastButFurious · 12/01/2024 14:40

I'd look around Newcastle and even Durham. I think it's got good transport links - you're on the main London-Edinburgh train line, the Metro goes out well into the suburbs, and there's an international airport. You've also got the coast on one side and hills / countryside on the other which I really like.

Or gorgeousness in rural Herefordshire, good schools too!

This is amazing for 200K. Watching this thread with interest as we want to move elsewhere in a few years time when retired and free up some money to help the kids.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 12/01/2024 14:51

Northern Ireland is still incredibly good value for money in regards to housing and certainly in comparison to much of the rest of the UK. Plus the further west you go, the more you get for your money. My friend bought a house in Omagh for £210k. It's 4 good size bedrooms, 2 reception rooms and a huge garden with a double garage.

GraceyDoodles · 12/01/2024 14:57

There are some pretty places in Cheshire that are affordable within your budget. Try looking in Nantwich and Sandbach, or perhaps the outskirts of these closer to Crewe where you'll get more for your money but still be very close to these towns and have the countryside feel.

CormoranStrikeIsBloodyLovely · 12/01/2024 15:05

Teesside gets looked down upon but many areas are great to live in. Have a look at Acklam, you will get a nice house for that with lovely walks, shops, sport facilities etc close by and good schools. James Cook University Hospital very close by too.
