Best cheap place to live in UK?

alltootired · 10/01/2024 17:47

We are considering moving and buying a house elsewhere in the UK. But we don't have much ,money.
Where is the best place to live in the UK where houses are still relatively cheap?

How much is not much ?? Could your budget stretch to Saltburn or further north??

wombats78 · 10/01/2024 17:49

There are some very cheap bits of Scottish cities where the posh areas are right next door. Lots of drugs tho.

Ditto Wales.

Probably dire bits of industrial places too.

Crikeyalmighty · 10/01/2024 17:51

How cheap is cheap - not being judgemental- want to help

alltootired · 10/01/2024 17:52

Under £200,000 for a 3-4 bedroom house, ideally quite a bit less.
I know it will not be in a posh area anywhere for that. Right next to posh areas sounds ideal.

How about Selby?

Cheshiresun · 10/01/2024 17:54

Staffordshire.

That's where we live now, comparable houses cheap compared to many areas of the UK, even in the North etc.

Ilovemyshed · 10/01/2024 17:54

Where are family/ work and what do you like to do in your free time?

alltootired · 10/01/2024 17:56

@peebles32 selby looks too expensive.

@Ilovemyshed I work remotely, DP does a minimum wage job within NHS nad can easily get another job almost anywhere doing the same. They can't fill the positions. We like walking and natural scenery best.

Seaside areas that are less 'nice' can be cheaper eg in Lincolnshire

wombats78 · 10/01/2024 17:57

Do you like hills, sea, views?

Do you need work opportunities, good schools?

Prefer a city, town or village?

What you can do is go to Rightmove, do a big area search with your budget and see where you fancy...

So I often do North Wales or Cumbria, that sort of big area. You can look on the map and then narrow it down and then flick through the details.

If you Google ‘zoopla uk houses for sale’ with the link that comes up you can search the whole of the uk in your price range and preferences.

alltootired · 10/01/2024 18:04

@Cheshiresun you are right, staffordshire is very cheap! Thanks.

Liverpool, vibrant city, friendly and low cost housing.

DeedlessIndeed · 10/01/2024 18:05

Glasgow or surrounding areas.
Some really lovely areas.

Could get a new build.

Trafficyriffic · 10/01/2024 18:06

You can easily get to the coast, Welsh mountains and the Lake District from Liverpool

@Cheshiresun you are right, staffordshire is very cheap! Thanks.

You're welcome.

I find it has good links to other areas in the countries, obviously being quite central, not too far away from cities but lots of open countryside too.

TheShoulder · 10/01/2024 18:07

Inland Cornwall?

alltootired · 10/01/2024 18:09

Thought cornwall was expensive?

Have a look around Dursley Glos I’m putting a 2 bed plus box on for £180k small court yard parking outside end terrace. There’s quite a few cheap houses around there right on the most amazing scenery rail links to Bristol big leisure centre good schooling etc It was mentioned in the Times a few years ago as an up and coming place

BasiliskStare · 10/01/2024 18:11

@alltootired My brother lives in Lytham st. Annes and works for the NHS as does his wife . It is a nice & quite "posh" area place to live .£170 k for a well built semi detached on a nice road . 1930s , big garden , garage , needed a bit of doing up but not too much. Big hospitals and other places to work for NHS within striking distance

Cheshiresun · 10/01/2024 18:11

I have family in Liverpool and surrounding areas. Spent a few years living in the North West myself, didn't find it cheap unfortunately. Not compared to where we are now in Staffordshire anyway! :)

jadedjanuary · 10/01/2024 18:16

Try Hexham in Northumberland. You'd get a 3 bedroomed Victorian terraced house for about £220k. Local NHS hospital; great schools; loads of green space and walking (close to Hadrian's wall); Tynemouth beach is 40 mins drive away. It's 30 minutes from Newcastle. There's a train station; leisure centre; decent cafes and it's a relatively safe place to live.

RenoDakota · 10/01/2024 18:19

Lowestoft, Suffolk.
Not far from the massive James Paget hospital, biggest employer in the area.
The town itself is a bit down at heel but has beautiful sandy beaches, and gorgeous Suffolk and Norfolk countryside on the doorstep.

MissMuffetisin · 10/01/2024 18:19

You’d get something in North East Derbyshire. Commutable to Sheffield, Nottingham, Derby and handy for the Peak District. Good rail and road connections too.

Turefu · 10/01/2024 18:19

Wakefield? Some areas in Leeds are within the budget.
