Best cheap place to live in UK?

We are considering moving and buying a house elsewhere in the UK. But we don't have much ,money.
Where is the best place to live in the UK where houses are still relatively cheap?

Pontypridd. Easily commutable to Cardiff to the large hospital or to the hospitals around the area. Near the sea and got a lido. Theatre and museums available in Cardiff.

SweetPalOMine · 10/01/2024 18:26

West Cumbria - local NHS services are always looking for staff, and while there are some grim bits, there are also plenty of decent areas, all close to beautiful scenery and the sea.

I live in the Black Country, probably hasn’t got the best reputation but cheap houses and lots of nhs jobs

alltootired · 10/01/2024 18:28

Thanks. Googling houses for sale for each of these.

Whilst it's rare I recommend my original home town of Mansfield- because for me it's not got enough 'naice' (I'm honest! ) it has quite a bit going for it if you are looking for cheap as chips- lovely walks in nearby Derbyshire are only 20 minutes away as are Hardwick house, clumber park and rufford park- Town centre is working class but quite big and practical- good market- it's on the train to Nottingham and has a decent hospital with A&E . It also does have some quite posh areas .
Several houses in posting here are in edwinstowe - an ex mining village but good pubs , some shops and set on edge of Sherwood Forest - these are all on ok areas .

I've seen way worse if I'm honest, here in the south for far more money.

Belfast!

Crazymadchickenlady · 10/01/2024 18:35

Caerphilly is good too or anywhere around the north of Cardiff.

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 10/01/2024 18:35

East Yorkshire.

Glasgow or surrounding areas.
Some really lovely areas.

Could get a new build.

You might get an older small three bed house that needs a lot of work in one of the towns surrounding Glasgow (East Kilbride, Johnstone, Paisley etc) for less than £200K but you're definitely not going to get a new build for that!

Endoftetherweather · 10/01/2024 18:41

sepends what you want - close to the country? Barrow in Furness is close to the lakes? Close to a city? Barnsley or Chorley.

alltootired · 10/01/2024 18:47

@GlasgowGal82 Thanks I had googled and realised its not cheap enough. I want somewhere with a lot of cheap properties.

North or North East Lincolnshire, you're within an hour of the seaside, the Wolds AONB and Leeds / York. Check out some of the smaller towns or villages between Scunthorpe and Lincoln

Turefu · 10/01/2024 18:51

@AltitudeCheck OP won't find 3-4 bed for 200k in York, in fact any house in York. Leeds more likely, but it's getting more expensive.

KenAdams · 10/01/2024 18:53

Herefordshire or Lincolnshire?

Kwam31 · 10/01/2024 18:54

I work here and there's 100s of new homes going up, easy commute to Edinburgh, nice small town feel, seems plenty going on in community.

starlight2kk · 10/01/2024 18:55

Lincoln?

Dmsandfloatydress · 10/01/2024 18:56

Herefordshire is beautiful but rural. Ditto forest of dean. You can get a 3 bed for that in both areas

PuffinMcStuffin · 10/01/2024 18:59

Campbeltown. I recall seeing a large 3 bedroom flat for £40k last year.
You are a long way from anything, but it is definitely very cheap.

AltitudeCheck · 10/01/2024 18:59

@Turefu you misunderstood me, I meant NL / NEL are within an hour or Leeds / York (if OP wanted good transport links, city shopping etc)

EverybodyLTB · 10/01/2024 19:01

Walton on the Naze - good little train, cheap big terrace houses.

alltootired · 10/01/2024 19:04

@Dmsandfloatydress that house is beautiful.
