Things that have too many or too few in a packet

I was pondering this as I opened a box of my current preferred biscuits. Nairn's dark chocolate oatcakes. I know all of the Nairns come in packs of 5 but still.

I don't need 5. I mean I would happily eat 5 and I did in the end and there were 5 in the packet. I'm trying to shed a few pounds (or just be a bit better than normal in Jan). I would be absolutely fine with 3. But I had to eat the other 2 and always will due to lack of willpower. I wouldn't eat 3 then eat 2 more if they came in 3s.

It got me thinking about other food items where there are too many or too few. Too many crisps in a grab bag too but I'll always eat all of them because they are THERE.

Any other examples?

Yy to Warburtons crumpets. I know you can buy a pack of six as well, but the nine is usually on offer and costs less! But I refuse to buy nine, so I get Tesco own instead which aren't as nice but are a hell of a lot cheaper.

@LubaLuca why would you refuse to buy 9? You could just put 3 in the freezer (if you must, I sometimes do, but mostly I eat them before they go off)

Six rashers doesn’t seem excessive for two people.

I don't eat meat, but 3 rashers doesn't seem excessive.

Yes, six would be good instead of 8.

Three each would be a good number.

Chicken thighs with skin on - 6/8 - too many for two (have a thing about freezing chicken).
Beans now have too much bean juice.
Most jars - jam/peanut butter etc too much for 1 person to use before use by date.
(Actually, wonder if I could freeze in ice tray?)
Same for tomato puree/pesto - (but do freeze in ice tray)

TIL that peanut butter has a best before date…. It’ll be completely fine past the date. As will jam, which is literally designed to keep for a long time - just keep it in the fridge and only use a clean knife (no crumbs) to stop it going mouldy.
Agree about the ratio of beans to sauce though.

I just got the butternut squash out of the fridge and thought of this thread. I love butternut squash but am the only one in the family who eats it. I have to have butternut squash every day for a week if I buy one as otherwise loads of it goes to waste. Not quite sure that that one can be solved!

Disturbia81 · 11/01/2024 17:38

I've noticed recently packs of ice lollies are coming in 5s instead of 6 so I have to buy a few boxes.

I bought a small butternut squash from my local co-op this week, which I think will work well for a recipe DH makes. Usually he uses half of a normal sized one and then I have to make soup of some sort with the rest.

Sausages. What use are 6 for a family of 4?

lemondroper · 11/01/2024 18:44

Thanks @Spaghettieis - good to know! I've eaten PB months after opening and always thought - it can't still be good?! :)

You buy 2 packs and have 3 each? Or 2 each and then one apiece left for a sausage sarnie.

Having the 'right number' of sausages with none left over is really missing the point of them.

Too few Jammy Dodgers. It really takes the biscuit.

Perfect if two are young children

drspouse · 14/01/2024 08:35

They are now 9 and 12... They weren't small for long!

Dotchange · 14/01/2024 08:40

Salad dressing.
Why are the bottles so big? I don’t think I have ever finished one.

It will keep for ages. Take no notice of the "use within 6 weeks". Ours is in the fridge until it is all gone.

Mischance · 14/01/2024 10:32

Everything! My OH died and everything comes in pack of two or more, so I finish up eating the same meal two days running.

Baldieheid · 14/01/2024 10:58

Microwave rice. The whole packet is a stretch for DH, who can eat for Britain as he's a gardener, but it's too small for us both. My "share" amounts to a tablespoon. I only keep one in as an emergency as I prefer rice cooked fresh, but honestly, it's such a crap quantity. It fails both ways.

Unwaxed lemons. Why are they always sold in bags of 5 or 6? Sometimes I just want 1, but it has to be unwaxed so I can use the rind. The singles are always waxed. I don't want a waxed lemon!! The remaining unwaxed lemons then grow blue mould in a week, so get thrown out. If I'm smart, I slice and freeze when I buy, but next time I want to bake lemon cake, we're back buying 5 of the fucking things again. Boils my piss, that one.

Charlie Bigham’s tikka masala, there needs to be twice as much sauce. It’s so delicious and there is no where near enough!

Ah see I like the fact it’s not too saucy!

Yes, I like a curry with a decent amount of meat not a ton of sauce.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/01/2024 11:50

M&S Cornish Cruncher cheese biscuits! Not nearly enough in a packet, not for a 🐷like me anyway.

KirstenBlest · 14/01/2024 12:05

@Snackpocket , buy 2 and have them with the 'not big enough for two' microwave rice.

It's really easy to freeze butternut squash. Peel & cut a large one into chunks, discard seeds (or save to grow your own!). Use the amount you need, then place the rest on a sheet of baking parchment on a baking tray. Make sure they're not touching each other. Place in the freezer until frozen. You can then put them in a freezer bag & keep frozen until you need them.

Game changer for me, I've got a recipe called "throw it all together" which is basically chickpeas, spinach, chopped chorizo, sun dried tomatoes & butternut squash oven roasted. It's so easy when you have butternut squash in the freezer.

Yes to maltesers and the 'share bags'

Also - I don't consider myself to be someone who loves big portions of things but I bought a chicken korma for 2 from M & S the other night to share with my teen DD.

It does NOT serve 2. 2 hamsters maybe but not 2 adults. I wonder if they now put less in or maybe my portion sizes are way out. But I don't think they are. Good job I had bought a back up Chicken Saag!

Yes to M & S curry! Me and DD shared one and neither of us have big appetites or portions and it was no where near enough.
