Things that have too many or too few in a packet

I was pondering this as I opened a box of my current preferred biscuits. Nairn's dark chocolate oatcakes. I know all of the Nairns come in packs of 5 but still.

I don't need 5. I mean I would happily eat 5 and I did in the end and there were 5 in the packet. I'm trying to shed a few pounds (or just be a bit better than normal in Jan). I would be absolutely fine with 3. But I had to eat the other 2 and always will due to lack of willpower. I wouldn't eat 3 then eat 2 more if they came in 3s.

It got me thinking about other food items where there are too many or too few. Too many crisps in a grab bag too but I'll always eat all of them because they are THERE.

Any other examples?

My first thought on seeing this thread title was Nairn's oatcakes.

We should start a campaign.

Yy to Warburtons crumpets. I know you can buy a pack of six as well, but the nine is usually on offer and costs less! But I refuse to buy nine, so I get Tesco own instead which aren't as nice but are a hell of a lot cheaper.

I wouldn't. They will take the opportunity to reduce the amount due to customer feedback but keep it the same price. Just scoff the lot and do an extra 300 steps.

Pack of 5 doughnuts - there are 2 of us. There were 4 when the children were at home - either way 5 does not work!

WannaBeABillionnaire · 10/01/2024 17:00

I feel like streaky bacon always comes in packs of 14 rashers, which is so unhelpful. The two of us usually use 4 rashers each for a bacon roll one day and then have 3 each the next day as part of another recipe. But 14, seriously. Why not 16 or even 12.

Paracetemol. What use are 16 for a family of four with colds or flu

That's a safety issue to avoid people overdosing & is a legal requirement (really not sure it prevents anyone overdosing but there is at least a reason for it).

When we had 5 at home this was about the only thing that came in the right numbers 😂

Yes to maltesers and the 'share bags'

Also - I don't consider myself to be someone who loves big portions of things but I bought a chicken korma for 2 from M & S the other night to share with my teen DD.

It does NOT serve 2. 2 hamsters maybe but not 2 adults. I wonder if they now put less in or maybe my portion sizes are way out. But I don't think they are. Good job I had bought a back up Chicken Saag!

I think this is the case with a lot of ready meals that pretend to serve 2. They typically serve 1.5 people.

I thought that it was a way to fudge the traffic light labelling on the packet. If you make the portion smaller, it looks like it's less calories.

In reality, most people probably just buy 2.

16 in a day won't kill the average person. More may well do so, which is why the 16 tab limit.
You can buy bigger packets otc at a pharmacy, but they'll double check that they aren't all for you.

cheapskatemum · 10/01/2024 17:29

Walkers baked crisps - the cheese & onion flavoured ones at least, I've no experience of other flavours. I support looked after children & one loves these. She's allowed one packet of crisps a day, but the first time we opened a packet of these & put them in a bowl, we did that comedy thing of both looking in the bowl & then looking at each other with a "Huh?!" expression on our faces, before I said she could have another one as one wasn't enough to keep a sparrow alive.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/01/2024 17:34

Surely with the m&S korma you're meant to get a stater and side such as daal not just the curry - then (imo) it's enough really.

FLOWER1982 · 10/01/2024 17:34

Bacon - came in 7 pieces in a pack! If there’s 4 of you who’s the unfortunate person who only gets one piece?! Annoying.

One for the dog

TomAllenWife · 10/01/2024 17:42

I eat crumpets in 3's but I don't like weird numbers left
If there was 8 I'd probs eat them in 2's but if there's 6 or 9 then I eat in 3's

I can't eat 1 egg if it leaves 5 in the box

I hate noodle places whose starters are in 5's! Gyozas or spring rolls
Just give me 4 ffs

TheShoulder · 10/01/2024 18:04

Trifle sponges.

You get about 50 gazillion in a packer, enough for a trifle the size of a washing up bowl, so you are left with loads of the dry, brittle, crumbly things that are inedible unless they are doused in pints of sherry, custard and cream, and go stale before you next have need to make a trifle next Christmas.

ALongHardWinter · 10/01/2024 18:51

I've never understood 9 crumpets in a packet. I usually eat them in 2s,or if extra hungry,4. 9 just doesn't make sense!

Lolovans · 10/01/2024 18:55

As a family of 5, anything that isn't bagels or donuts

Mammyloveswine · 10/01/2024 19:03

storminabuttercup · 10/01/2024 16:10

Crumpets.

Why is there 9?? You eat them in 2s?

I eat 3 crumpets at a time..

Snozzlemaid · 10/01/2024 19:22

When I get a cold I tend to get sinus pain so I take Sinutab.
They come in packs of 15 tablets.
The standard dose is 2 tablets, so why sell them in 15's?

Bluestaratsea · 10/01/2024 19:33

Yes to the nine crumpets, and packs of oatcakes! Always too many oatcakes per pack to eat in one go so you are left with a random two and have to faff and find something to put them in.

WrinklesShminkles · 10/01/2024 19:35

Sausages and bacon both have too many in a pack. For a short time my supermarket offered 8 in a pack but it was in two separate boxes, which was perfect as you could use 4 and freeze the other 4. So naturally they stopped that pretty sharpish 🙄

LadyEloise1 · 10/01/2024 19:41

Another saying a 5 pack of Nairns is too much.
A 3 pack is fine.

Porageeater · 10/01/2024 19:45

My mind is now boggling about the dark chocolate oatcakes. I must have some.

kuchisabishii · 10/01/2024 19:46

Chocolate fingers have an odd number in the packet which really annoys me as someone who eats things in twos

My thoughts exactly.
