Things that have too many or too few in a packet

I was pondering this as I opened a box of my current preferred biscuits. Nairn's dark chocolate oatcakes. I know all of the Nairns come in packs of 5 but still.

I don't need 5. I mean I would happily eat 5 and I did in the end and there were 5 in the packet. I'm trying to shed a few pounds (or just be a bit better than normal in Jan). I would be absolutely fine with 3. But I had to eat the other 2 and always will due to lack of willpower. I wouldn't eat 3 then eat 2 more if they came in 3s.

It got me thinking about other food items where there are too many or too few. Too many crisps in a grab bag too but I'll always eat all of them because they are THERE.

Any other examples?

Bacon, too big a packet for two people. It means cooking bacon two mornings in a row.

But it keeps a few days. Scatter some on a green veg risotto or use in a pasta dish. It freezes ok.

Roystonv · 10/01/2024 22:12

Always too many wraps but at least I can freeze them for next time. Gnocchi (Asda and Aldi) - too few for two portions, too much for one.

Trickofthetrade · 10/01/2024 22:25

M & S chocolate covered custard creams. Only 6 in packet !!! Delicious and pricey at £2.50ish a pack !

Always too many wraps in an old Elpaso enchilada or fajita kit.

But not quite enough pancakes with crispy duck

RubySundayy · 10/01/2024 22:43

Haha I’ve just found this thread after trying and failing to find a way to order 2 bagels in my Sainsbury’s shop that’s coming tomorrow. It’s 4, 6 or nothing!

My mind is now boggling about the dark chocolate oatcakes. I must have some.

I’ve just added some to my aforementioned sainsburys shop. Had never even heard of them before

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 10/01/2024 22:47

@Hibernatalie

Yes and packets of wraps in general. Unless you use them every day - I am forever finding cardboard wraps in my breadbin!

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 10/01/2024 22:48

@RubySundayy they are absolutely lovely. No idea if they are a lot more healthy than the average chocolate digestive. I choose to believe they are healthy as they are Nairns so therefore must be oatcakes!

Why do hotdogs usually come in multiples of 8, but hotdog buns come in multiples of 6?

Is that you Steve Martin?

Pack of 5 doughnuts - there are 2 of us. There were 4 when the children were at home - either way 5 does not work!

In the 90s they did packs of 10 for £1 in Tesco. I managed 6 once. Now Asda is the only place near me and they sell them in 5s. How am I going to best my pb now??

PathOfLeastResitance · 10/01/2024 23:45

I’m always frustrated with how small toothpaste tubes are. There are 4 of us and we always seem to be near the end of the tube. Even the biggest one isn’t that big really.

Allchangename354 · 11/01/2024 06:50

Warburtons thins - 6 ? Five for a 5 day week one person or maybe ten two each or two people covered?

TomAllenWife · 10/01/2024 17:42

I eat crumpets in 3's but I don't like weird numbers left
If there was 8 I'd probs eat them in 2's but if there's 6 or 9 then I eat in 3's

I can't eat 1 egg if it leaves 5 in the box

I hate noodle places whose starters are in 5's! Gyozas or spring rolls
Just give me 4 ffs

Gyoza and other starters like this won't be offered in fours because in Chinese and Japanese the number four sounds similar to the word for death and has come to symbolize bad luck as a result.

Things in fours tend to get avoided in general. In Japanese, people even default to a different word when counting to avoid saying the word ( one says 'yon' instead of 'shi', if anyone is in the mood for trivia.)

Grumblebees · 11/01/2024 08:49

Jar of hot dog sausages (nice ones, 75% pork) - 8 in the jar. Hot dog buns - 6 in the pack 🤦🏼‍♀️

LadyEloise1 · 11/01/2024 09:03

Cosmetic wipes - 25 - why not 30 or 31 ???

Deathbyfluffy · 11/01/2024 09:06

Pixiedust1234 · 10/01/2024 16:54

I wouldn't. They will take the opportunity to reduce the amount due to customer feedback but keep it the same price. Just scoff the lot and do an extra 300 steps.

I’d love 300 steps to cover the calories of an oatcake - if you do the maths on how many you’d actually need to do I think you’ll get a shock!

I eat 3 crumpets at a time..

Me too! It’s exactly the right number in a packet 😂

Six rashers doesn’t seem excessive for two people.

Jaffa cakes Sad

I came on to say Jaffa cakes. To add insult to injury they reduced the pack size from 12 to 10 a while ago.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/01/2024 22:39

But not quite enough pancakes with crispy duck

The M&S crispy duck which I haven't seen for ages so I'm not sure that they do it anymore comes with a smidgen of cucumber. Like maybe enough cucumber for a couple of pancakes. So you either have disappointing pancakes or have to buy a bloody cucumber that then sits in the fridge till it's thrown out.

NotFastButFurious · 11/01/2024 09:18

I recently bought bacon that had 7 rashers in the pack……wtf……one for every day of the week?!? I’m sure it used to be 8 and this is to keep the price the same but how does one divide 7 between bacon rolls?!?

Writerscompanion · 11/01/2024 09:19

Those instant microwave rice packets, Tilda, Uncle Ben's etc. We usually end up microwaving a second packet for the two of us as the portion of half a pack is so stingy. But a whole one is too much!

Mammyloveswine · 10/01/2024 19:03

I eat 3 crumpets at a time..

Me too.

I would have two slices of toast, but a crumpet just doesn’t seem as big or filling as a slice of bread. I’m sure it is as many calories though…

re the M&S curry- don’t they claim is serves two people so it makes their traffic light system look much better? They know that plenty of people will eat the whole thing, but that would make fat/salt etc red instead of amber so they claim it serves two. Like supermarket pizzas which are for 2 or 3 people based on the serving size but are the same size as a one person pizza you’d get from a restaurant.

orangegato · 11/01/2024 09:30

Jammie Dodgers. All plastic, no biscuit.

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 11/01/2024 09:35

@Writerscompanion

Yes! They are so convenient and I am crap at cooking rice BUT totally agree!
