Things that have too many or too few in a packet

I was pondering this as I opened a box of my current preferred biscuits. Nairn's dark chocolate oatcakes. I know all of the Nairns come in packs of 5 but still.

I don't need 5. I mean I would happily eat 5 and I did in the end and there were 5 in the packet. I'm trying to shed a few pounds (or just be a bit better than normal in Jan). I would be absolutely fine with 3. But I had to eat the other 2 and always will due to lack of willpower. I wouldn't eat 3 then eat 2 more if they came in 3s.

It got me thinking about other food items where there are too many or too few. Too many crisps in a grab bag too but I'll always eat all of them because they are THERE.

Any other examples?

As a family of 5, anything that isn't bagels or donuts

🤣 I was thinking "as 3 of us here eat crumpets, the 9 pack is perfect! But everything else in evens ends up in an argument..."

Paracetemol. What use are 16 for a family of four with colds or flu

A balance between safety and convenience and it did some good according to this study by the Department of Psychiatry at an Oxford hospital-

Suicide deaths from paracetamol and aspirin fell by 22% in the year after the legislation and this reduction persisted in the next two years. Liver unit admissions and liver transplants for paracetamol induced liver damage were reduced by around 30% in the four years after the legislation. Numbers of paracetamol and aspirin tablets taken in non-fatal overdoses were reduced in the three years after the legislation. Large overdoses fell by 20% for paracetamol and 39% for aspirin in the second and third years after the legislation.

Matchmakers - the box is only HALF full, they could shove waaaaay more in there.

Think this is shrinkflation. It used to have more and the company think they can fool us by keeping price and packaging the same.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 10/01/2024 20:21

They do it so you have to buy 2 packs.
I like those packs of 3 mini trifles.
Great for me,dh and ds but a lot of people are a family of 4.

Hibernatalie · 10/01/2024 20:25

Always too many wraps in an old Elpaso enchilada or fajita kit.

Hibernatalie · 10/01/2024 20:28

Dominoes chicken strippers - 7 per portion. 7? That's a prime number domino's!!!!

Walkers baked crisps - the cheese & onion flavoured ones at least, I've no experience of other flavours. I support looked after children & one loves these. She's allowed one packet of crisps a day, but the first time we opened a packet of these & put them in a bowl, we did that comedy thing of both looking in the bowl & then looking at each other with a "Huh?!" expression on our faces, before I said she could have another one as one wasn't enough to keep a sparrow alive.

Yes these !!!! I always think no wonder they are less in calories as there are no crisps in the packet .

also multipack monster munch , literally 5 in a bag

bendypines · 10/01/2024 20:31

I sent DH out to buy a pack of chicken thighs the other day. He came back with a pack containing seven. He said he checked, and all of them had the same number in the pack.

We can either be cooking for two, three or four, depending on who is around.

So for two people we have 2 each, which means there are three left over to freeze, so next meal we are one short. For three people, 2 each, one left over. For four portions of 2 each, you are one thigh short. Whatever you do, it's the wrong number.

The other regular supermarket size is five in the pack, which is just as annoyingly awkward.

Just why?

Yes to maltesers and the 'share bags'

Also - I don't consider myself to be someone who loves big portions of things but I bought a chicken korma for 2 from M & S the other night to share with my teen DD.

It does NOT serve 2. 2 hamsters maybe but not 2 adults. I wonder if they now put less in or maybe my portion sizes are way out. But I don't think they are. Good job I had bought a back up Chicken Saag!

They say these meals are for 2 even though they only serve 1 because if they told the truth the nutritional information would look shocking! This way they can pretend it’s 600kcal a portion and not 2 days worth of salt.

Hardbackwriter · 10/01/2024 20:32

Filled pasta (the sort you get from the supermarket chiller, near the pizza) always seems to me to be a stingy portion for two, which I think is what the packet claims it is for, but excessive for one.

IHeartKingThistle · 10/01/2024 20:33

I knew this was going to be Nairns before I opened it! And let me state for the record that I LOVE that company and all their gluten free loveliness. But yes, DH is forever going 'why are there two crackers in a plastic packet on the worktop again?' Grin

Mintearo7 · 10/01/2024 20:39

Lasagne sheets.

DemBonesDemBones · 10/01/2024 20:50

Jaffa cakes. Never enough.

This.

I end up having to whack a load of mushrooms into a pan with butter and maybe some peppers as well, just to bulk it up and make it feel like a whole meal. Ludicrous as it's meant to be an emergency fast tea for us. Flipping annoying.

@NewYearNewYak

Ok that makes perfect sense!

@evtheria, hummus usually lasts beyond the BB date, especially if unopened.

New2024 · 10/01/2024 21:03

Those little potted cheesecake desserts come in 3s and so do mini trifles. As a family of 3, we often remark how few things are in 3s.

lemondroper · 10/01/2024 21:10

Chicken thighs with skin on - 6/8 - too many for two (have a thing about freezing chicken).
Beans now have too much bean juice.
Most jars - jam/peanut butter etc too much for 1 person to use before use by date.
(Actually, wonder if I could freeze in ice tray?)
Same for tomato puree/pesto - (but do freeze in ice tray)

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/01/2024 21:13

Why do hotdogs usually come in multiples of 8, but hotdog buns come in multiples of 6?

Kalevala · 10/01/2024 21:22

Bacon, too big a packet for two people. It means cooking bacon two mornings in a row.

Kalevala · 10/01/2024 21:25

Eggs are too few, seems hard to buy a dozen anymore.

You can buy 2 trays of 30 eggs where I live (rural). They're called "bakers' eggs".

Squirrelsbite · 10/01/2024 21:32

Jacob’s crackers
i don’t eat many so buy the wrapped ones in a box from Tesco
the are packed in 3’s I like to butter and squash 2 together having 3 is just odd

I know where to get them but I'd have to request them, then drive down a narrow lane hoping I don't have to reverse far if I meet someone. Often I'm tired and just want to do a shop in one place.

Supermarkets used to do a lot more packs of 12 before the 'shortages'.
