Your favourite thing about winter?

Hannamana · 09/01/2024 23:39

I am feeling a bit glum this January. So I wanted to ask:

What is your favourite thing about winter?

Mine would be a steak pie and mash, while wearing my fleece trousers.

Wearing fleecey lined boots. Daffodils beginning to break through. Primroses starting to come back to life. Wearing my lovely warm snuggly coat with proper pockets. The council swimming pool actually feeling warm (compared to freezing in summer). lighting the fire and sitting beside it with a mug of tea, a book, classic fm, and several cats. Wearing my snuggly scarves and some thrummed gloves. watching the birds on the bird feeders. Wearing bright yellow boots to splash in puddles and kick the leaves (yep one big inner child screaming to be let out).

Getting cosy at home.

The end of it.

Came on to say the end of it! Beaten to it!

I don't mind the start of it as a novelty but I really dislike being cold, it makes me feel ill and tired. So definitely feeling over it now.

I do love early nights and lie ins I suppose with my electric blanket.

MaidOfSteel · 10/01/2024 00:23

Honestly, nothing. I hate everything about winter. I spend it just wishing for spring to arrive.

Lizzieregina · 10/01/2024 00:26

Not a thing.

It’s currently snowing where I live and next week will be -22C overnight.

And we won’t see a daffodil here until April 😭

Cant wait to be able to spend winter elsewhere!

Charles11 · 10/01/2024 00:33

I'm someone who likes to see the best in all the seasons and the rhythms of nature but when it's cold for a few days then it's really hard.
I would say soups, comforting food, tea, tv and relaxing in a clean warm home counts for a lot. I appreciate this more because our boiler is being dodgy so our heating hasnt been the best.

Puffinshop · 10/01/2024 00:35

Snow. Sledging. Northern lights. Riding my bike with the studded tyres on. Erm... I quite like wearing warm hats. That's about it I'd say.

When you get snow!
Christmas, obviously.
Brisk walks where you get back inside and can feel all cosy.
Reading books, watching films, feeling warm and safe inside. No pressure to go out.
When you get inside and the heating is on.
Warm baths! And dressing gowns.
The excitement of spring yet to come.
Getting the house all ready, doing a new year spring clean and clear out.
London and cities in general.

TannedFrombirth · 10/01/2024 01:24

Being season appropriate to wear snug clothes without anyone judging you.

Hot chocolate

Warm bed 🛌

Goldenretrievermum · 10/01/2024 01:29

Less social pressure - love to be able to kick back for a night on the sofa guilt free. Being able to wear coats and jumpers! Hate the self consciousness that summer brings with bikinis, dresses etc

YukoandHiro · 10/01/2024 01:30

I look much better in winter clothes. So just that really

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 10/01/2024 01:31

My birthday 😁

missingyears · 10/01/2024 01:40

No FOMO

Thursa · 10/01/2024 03:50

I like the dark nights. The smell of real fires as you walk home on a chilly night. Pulling the curtains, turning on lamps and lighting candles. Cuddling on the couch with the dogs and a blanket. Not feeling like I’m wasting daylight. Coffee with peppermint mocha coffee mate. Comfort meals…leek and tattie soup, sausage sandwich, chili con carne, curry, spaghetti bolognaise, apple crumble with too much cream. Going to bed with my hot water bottle. Family game nights. Thick fluffy socks. Filling the bird feeder and listening to the chirping away in the morning when they come to eat.

mathanxiety · 10/01/2024 04:04

The gloom and the cold. I like bundling up, baking, cooking soups and stews and chili, and being cosy indoors.

I like having my deck plants indoors to overwinter. My dining room in particular looks like a mini jungle.

I like heading out to work when it's still dark.

We get proper winters here, with snow and polar conditions lasting months. I appreciate I'm lucky to have a warm home and a good coat and boots. I also appreciate that they clear the snow so I can get out to work.

Neighbours shovel snow off the sidewalks for others who are unable to fornwhatever reason. There's a strong feeling of everyone being in it together when we have a storm.

MCOut · 10/01/2024 04:14

Winter clothes and soft fluffy blankets

Manyandyoucanwalkover · 10/01/2024 04:20

Lighting a candle in the late afternoon. Snuggling on the sofa with my heated throw and my poodle. Stew and dumplings. Brisk walks in the park, without hoards of people. Planning what seeds I’m going to plant for the summer.

brainworms · 10/01/2024 04:23

It's my favourite season. I can BREATHE. I can go out and not come back in absolutely melting from any sort of activity.

What I hate, is when I walk into a shop and opening the door is like opening a kiln because it's too hot.

fromhellsheartistabatthee · 10/01/2024 04:43

Big wool overcoats, hats, gloves, scarves and boots.

Sushilover14 · 10/01/2024 04:49

I like how it is a lot quieter outside - less people out and about.

2024GarlicCloves · 10/01/2024 05:04

I like that a cold season discourages pathogens and other buggy things, so we're troubled by far fewer lethal diseases and scary bites/stings than people in the tropics.

Apart from that, nothing. I spend it morosely waiting for Spring.

CrabbyMommy · 10/01/2024 05:12

It's more acceptable to be indoors, less guilting of not being out and 'enjoying the sun' 🙄
I don't need to reapply heavy smelly or expensive SPf when i'm out.
Thick body covering clothes, i dont have to shave or worry about my body.
I don't have to see others in skimpy clothes men or women.
Spring and summer gives me hayfever, heat rash and body consciousness. I have another skin disorder that flares up in heat, remission in cold.
I would move to a country where its much colder much more often if I wasnt tied up here.

CrabbyMommy · 10/01/2024 05:13

Public transport stinks less in winter
