I promised my little boy a car themed 5 cake. I had a practice run and now I'm panicking 😫
What can I do to make it look better before I start putting cars etc on it?! Help!!!!!

Any ideas how to make this cake look edible?

I think it looks fine. How about grating chocolate or sprinkling with crushed up flake? Or doing the outline on the top on colourful m and ms?

purplehue · 09/01/2024 20:36

It looks yummy 😋

As the PP said add chocolate shavings or m and ms or both.

Cover it in spray glitter or sprinkles? Or put a cake ribbon round, pinned on

I was thinking about getting some ready to roll icing and putting that over it so I can put the cars on it?! I need to make it look like a road 😫

A double row of chocolate buttons all the way along the top, with white chocolate buttons pushed in vertically between them to make the white lines of a road?

planetarynoodle · 09/01/2024 20:39

It's lovely! Put monster trucks on it?

TheCompactPussycat · 09/01/2024 20:39

Or just white chocolate buttons pushed in vertically to make the road markings to make it easier.

Ewoklady · 09/01/2024 20:40

It looks great to be honest !!
I would put smarties around the inner and outer edges to neaten it up but it’s brilliant

bendypines · 09/01/2024 20:40

You need a row of white markings on top so it looks like a road. Maybe some piped white icing? Then a multitude of sprinkles. You could also put on some traffic-light sets of Smarties.

sprigatito · 09/01/2024 20:42

Chocolate buttons stuck in to define all the edges, then tic tacs placed down the middle to look like road markings, then grated chocolate over the outside edges to blend into the buttons.

Clean up edges and remove crumbs from board. Cover in white chocolate buttons or smarties/malteasers etc.

orangegato · 09/01/2024 20:44

Looks delicious already though!

persisted · 09/01/2024 20:44

Silver balls along the middle for cats eyes, and white chocolate fingers for curbs or to beaten up the sides.

It's fine though, he's 5 and it's chocolate cake, how bad can it be?!

closingdownsale · 09/01/2024 20:44

It looks really good though!

LunaLovegoodsLeftEyebrow · 09/01/2024 20:44

The smarties to neaten it up works amazingly! This is also a five one - I think we used the same mould!!

What about smarties and brown (chocolate) stratiacelli (those little brown tubes a bit like hundreds and thousands) as the road for the cars?

Chocolate fingers stood vertically round the sides to neaten those up and then something for road markings. Wouldn't recommend ready to roll icing, it's a nightmare to work with on awkward shapes!

0scon · 09/01/2024 20:47

Move carefully into another clean plate. Smarties around the bottom to neaten up then one of the ideas about white buttons sounds great. Don't put ready rolled icing on it's would be really hard to do on that shape

LunaLovegoodsLeftEyebrow · 09/01/2024 20:48

Sorry I meant to say - the one I posted looked just like yours before I put the rest of the decorations on!

Great suggestion

This was mine a few years ago, I just used a round cake and then made the number shape, then dyed desiccated coconut green for grass and put two cars on it. Obviously for a younger child but was very easy and effective! Maybe you could do the same on a plate as somebody else suggested, or just stick with a round cake perhaps?

Don't panic. Kids have amazing imagination and don't notice the odd less than perfect bit.

As others have said the top already looks like a road so you need something white for the white dashed lines. I'd cut giant white buttons in half and push in curved side down. You can use things like chocolate raisins to make the edge stones and then pop on a few toy cars.

I suspect DS would love to help and will then tell everyone that he made it and all of his friends will be impressed.

TomeTome · 09/01/2024 20:54

Honestly it looks VERY edible. Does it have to be cars? Tractors would be EPIC

But OP has made an AMAZING 5 shaped cake why would she make another round one?

Very special to have a mum who makes homemade cakes too. It will look fab when neatened up, put on new plate and decorated like road as PP suggest. Hope your DC enjoys.
