I promised my little boy a car themed 5 cake. I had a practice run and now I'm panicking 😫
What can I do to make it look better before I start putting cars etc on it?! Help!!!!!

Any ideas how to make this cake look edible?

You really pulled it back from a wreck- well done! Otherwise you could have made it a ''car crash''!

That's so good OP that I'm now wondering if you bake for a living and this thread is cunning stealth advising 😂 Let's hope that I've just spent too long on Mumsnet! Hope your boy has a great birthday 🎂

Make a ganache and pour it over on a wire rack to smooth the icing?

I'd stick Cadbury fingers all round the edge vertically.
Then very carefully pipe or roll sausages to make white stripes down the middle for road markings and top with real toy cars.

I'm in the middle of my own cake decorating for my youngest a 4 layer lemon drizzle splatter cake - ime they always look a bit (sometimes very!) ropey until the end when it pulls together!

VeganNugsNotDrugs · 20/01/2024 15:32

That's brilliant, thanks for updating! Hope he had a fab birthday too.

You've really set yourself a standard for next year now 😉

ShiftySquirrel · 20/01/2024 15:33

Umph · 20/01/2024 15:37

A double row of chocolate buttons all the way along the top, with white chocolate buttons pushed in vertically between them to make the white lines of a road?

Genius!

Deafening · 20/01/2024 17:09

I bet your little boy was over the moon with that. Looks brilliant.

Illpickthatup · 20/01/2024 17:14

Make some grey buttercream and smooth it over the top. Make some royal icing and mark white lines like road markings along the middle of the grey road. Make some green butter cream and using a piping bag to add grass around the bottom of the cake. Then add the toy cars.

WildAndFree123 · 20/01/2024 17:26

This is incredible! I bet he will remember it forever. I still have fond memories of a rainbow sprite cake my mum made about 40 years ago.
