Do you do household chores in the evening?

I tidy the kitchen after tea (usually about 6pm) and sometimes put the dishwasher on and that’s it! I can’t be bothered to do a lot more. This evening I cleaned the kitchen floor and changed my bedsheets. Imagine how much I could get done if I wasn’t so lazy!

I doubt you are lazy, you’ve presumably just worked all day.

Do you need do more?

OpalOrchid · 06/01/2024 21:39

Rarely. DH always clears up after dinner.

TillyTrifle · 06/01/2024 21:41

No. I like to keep things fairly quiet when the kids go to bed, I can’t imagine clattering around hoovering. For their sake I sit and quietly watch TV eating biscuits 😊

megletthesecond · 06/01/2024 21:42

Of course. I wouldn't start cleaning the bathroom or dysoning in the evening (unless it's high summer and light) but general tidying and organising still needs to be done.

cherrypickles · 06/01/2024 21:42

Probably not on a Saturday.

I've been thinking about this too recently.

After tea it's usually 7-8ish I usually dos quick clear down and put away in the kitchen.

But I don't want to start dusting or sorting laundry, changing beds, cleaning toilets and so on at 8pm

Although if I have a busy weekend i might sort laundry and tidy upstairs in a Friday evening.

cherrypickles · 06/01/2024 21:43

I tried the "organised mum method" TOMM.

It's doesn't work if you don't like doing stuff in the evening and work during the week!

AdoraBell · 06/01/2024 21:44

Usually not. DH clears up after dinner. I try to get things done in the day.

Whatwouldnanado · 06/01/2024 21:44

I stick the dishwasher on, wipe the surfaces hoover and tidy the sitting room before bed. Nice not to come down to a mess in the morning, and good to know we’re tidy if anyone wants to bring people home after work/school. I usually empty the dishwasher while I’m cooking dinner. Usually put a wash on mid week and change beds at the weekend. Everyone’s different but it does help g to to have a bit of a routine rather than letting things build up!

CharlotteBog · 06/01/2024 21:45

I do most of the household jobs in the evening. If you are working and have children who you either need to be with or take to clubs then when else do you do them? And if you do your own interests in the evening then housework gets pushed back. I'm often pottering around until 11pm. I'm a night owl though.

Readingtheworld · 06/01/2024 21:45

Yes, it’s either that or before work/school etc. We both prefer evening to morning, reset and do the worst mainly. We don’t want to spend the weekend cleaning.

Lovelynames123 · 06/01/2024 21:45

Nope, I might put a wash on but wouldn't occur to me to do housework of an evening. I've usually been at work for 12hours, on my feet. I save the housework for when I have a 6 hour work day and am home by 3.30, or my day off, and I have a cleaner once a fortnight to help

LoveRules · 06/01/2024 21:48

I potter around in the morning as too tired or have commitments like grocery shopping, gym classes, piano and drama lessons most nights.

In the morning I'll unload the dishwasher, hang laundry out to dry, return things to their places, fold lounge blankets etc.

This. Evening is the only time I am in the house.

EmpressSoleil · 06/01/2024 21:52

Never. I don't even clean up after dinner! Other than put my plate on the side.

I wfh now so prefer to do it in the morning. But even when I worked in an office I'd get up earlier and do it then, before work. I'd do the dishwasher and then a smallish job like hoover round or wipe over the bathroom. Usually took around 30 minutes so I wasn't getting up hours earlier.

Basically once I've eaten, all I want to do is relax.

ButteryBiscuitBaseBiscuitBase · 06/01/2024 22:33

I cook and wash up if it's my turn. I tidy up the kitchen if it's a bit messy and shift stuff off the dining room table if it's too cluttered to use but other than that, no.

everygreensock · 06/01/2024 22:36

Nope. After the kids are asleep I watch tv and then go to bed. I'm pleased with myself if I wash my face.

Teenagersscarethelivinshitoutofme · 06/01/2024 22:37

I like everything tidy before I go to bed, dinner washed up, stuff all put away. I don't do actual cleaning unless I've got something dirty. Just tidy up, quick wipe of sides in kitchen if needed, coffee table tidy etc. Cleaning gets done on weekends with the odd whizz round the bathroom or of the hoover in the week.

HippeePrincess · 06/01/2024 22:39

Yes, I loathe getting up early though so I’d rather it was doing it in the evening as I don’t do anything except strictly necessary things in the morning, not even load the dishwater!

Mazuslongtoenail · 06/01/2024 22:39

I don’t know when else I’d have time? I theoretically do jobs from finishing kids bedtime until 9pm but I don’t manage it every night (or even close to every night.)

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 06/01/2024 22:40

Yep

Dishwasher
Vacuum
Clean floors
Laundry

PeanutsArentNuts · 06/01/2024 22:40

Yes, but bearing in mind I have low standards 😅
Very much a night owl, the thought of my a.m. self anywhere near caustic substances / an iron / even manoeuvring the hoover is mildly horrifying!

RaininSummer · 06/01/2024 22:43

No chance. I don't get home until 5.30 at earliest so I clean the kitchen up after dinner and may do one short job like hoover or put a wash on. Then I have a blitz either Saturday or Sunday morning.

Same, it's good if you're a SAHM. I wfh most days and I can't do a lot before 5pm so I have no choice other than having to do some things in the evening, mainly laundry which is an everyday thing

CointreauVersial · 06/01/2024 22:45

I cook, and clean up the kitchen / load dishwasher etc. Hate waking up to a messy kitchen.

I might also stick a load of laundry in the machine and hang it up.

I give the living room a quick tidy before bed.

But I wouldn't be hoovering / dusting / cleaning bathrooms. That is a day job at the weekend.

MonkeyPuddle · 06/01/2024 22:46

I do. But only every other week due to my working patterns. Usually one job a night, quick clean of the bathroom, the kitchen, sort through of my room, washing away, doesn’t take more than 20 mins really. Audiobook on via headphones and I’m away. Once it’s done I find I can relax more easily.
