OMG. Packing cubes

falleninlove · 05/01/2024 20:02

I'm 60. Spent 35 years in a high pressure career which took me around the world. Spent most of my professional life living out of a suitcase.

Getting ready for a really special trip to celebrate combined 60th and retirement and decided, after reading up on mumsnet, to try packing cubes.

OMG. Where have these been all my life. Beyond fabulous. I'm completely blown away. Sorry. Just had to share.

About to start a new job that includes lots of travel……Tell me more!

SoulMole · 05/01/2024 20:09

We got them for our camper van but they quickly made it to Greece!

Munchyseeds2 · 05/01/2024 20:15

They are very useful, we also use them in the campervan. I am always amazed at how much can be packed in

There are some good videos showing packing tips on utube

Alwaystired2023 · 05/01/2024 20:16

Oh yes so good! Packed for me and DC using cubes and so much in, so easy, and minimal crumpled clothes etc.

Yes! Absolutely fab for multi centre trip, life changing.

TooTiredToType77 · 05/01/2024 20:21

We bought them for a road trip to Canada last summer and absolute game changer. Compression packing cubes are the way to go. So much easier on a multi destination holiday as you know which cube has what and aren't just digging thru the whole case the whole time

dudsville · 05/01/2024 20:22

Anyone got a pic of their own? I'm curious about these but i don't get it, why is it better instead of just now sfuff?

educatingrati · 05/01/2024 20:25

They are great if you have multiple stops, camping or living out of a backpack.
Personally I don't find them useful for a bog standard holiday or if staying in the same place for a night or two.

HeddaGarbled · 05/01/2024 20:26

What do you do when you put the cubes in your suitcase and they don’t fit neatly, so you’ve got gaps in the bottom layer and a random cube that you have to squash on top?

Greenchestnut · 05/01/2024 20:27

Yes they are so good!

May you enjoy them on many more trips during your retirement!

HeddaGarbled · 05/01/2024 20:28

Also, do you put shoes in the cubes?

OMGitsnotgood · 05/01/2024 20:28

I can see the benefit, especially when staying in multiple places. What do you do with dresses, long trousers etc? Pack on top of the cubes?

BoilingHotand50something · 05/01/2024 20:30

I found them invaluable when the kids were babies and you had bibs, socks, vests, muslins, nappies etc and then when there were growing to and all their clothes were small. We would just shove the whole cubes in drawers on arrival. Not really used them since.

The tend to fit together one way or another

Bertiesmum3 · 05/01/2024 20:30

We’ve just got some bog standard cheap ones that we bought a few years ago just to give them a try, I loved them so bought my husband some 🤣🤣
They’re handy because we always mix our clothes in 2 suitcaseS incase one goes missing!!
outs are similar to these

TheChosenTwo · 05/01/2024 20:30

Never really understood the appeal of them but I go on holiday to one place at a time and tend to rewear my clothes so don’t pack eg 7 complete outfits for 7 nights.
Just can’t see how they save space or time or anything in my situation!

If you are doing multiple stops you don't have to constantly unpack and repack, you just take out packing cube no1 which contains all you need for one night etc.
If backpacking you don't need to riffle through you pack, knowing that Sod's Law the item you want is right down at the bottom of your pack, you especially don't want to do this if you're soaking wet, as everything in your pack is likely to get wet.
Similar with camping, it's easier to have what you need at hand, and keeping everything organised in a very small space, very useful when you've got kids too, as it stops everything migrating into several different places.

Fold them smaller and pack in a cube!

beet I first discovered these backpacking in NewZealand over 20 years ago! I find they are all much of a muchness, I try and avoid the ones that come with makeup/underwear zip pack (like pencil cases) as I don't use them, I like the actual cubes. I like the ones which have cross straps as the help to compress clothing, but that's just personal preference.

cherrypickles · 05/01/2024 20:36

I pack everything in cubes and they are fabulous. From overnight trips to longer holidays they are amazing.

Overnight means your pants are not likely to fall out your bag as you retrieve a charger. Longer breaks can colour code per family member and then mix hem up in the suitcases. Also with limited storage in holiday just leave in the cubes and share the storage

My favoured reason is that I can back clean or unworn items separated from laundry so I don't have to wash everything.

KeeeeeepDancing · 05/01/2024 20:41

Yes they are a game changer.

NomDePrune · 05/01/2024 20:43

How is this any different from using strong carrier bags for example? I've always used separate ones for eg lingerie, dirty laundry, shoes...but not felt I needed to buy anything special
