Anyone actually excited about a Keir / Labour govt?

roarrfeckingroar · 04/01/2024 17:37

I'm typically a Tory voter (one nation Conservative, just right of centre, nothing radical) and gender critical, so I'm wary of a Labour government. I worry they'll leave the country worse than it is now.

However, I absolutely agree we need a change. Things can't get much worse, can they? Idiots like Boris and Truss have made a mockery of what I understand of the Conservatives - namely economic competence - and I can't vote for them this time. I don't know who I will vote for.

Listening to LBC this evening, I hear a Labour MP talk about how Starmer is offering an "exciting programme" of change and I just don't buy it. Maybe he will he better, maybe he won't, but my real question is is anyone genuinely excited about Labour, or just looking forward to the back of the Tories?

@MyopicBunny couldn't agree more. I personally want a calm diplomat who has compassion but isn't naive and isn't into fleecing the country for his mates /donors to benefit. I don't need/want the faux 'mateiness/folks' bravado of the Johnson type. Worked with plenty of that type for years- all a bunch of false , lazy narcissists .

Actually of all the Tory's in recent times the only one who kind of fitted that agenda was Theresa May- problem was she was vastly outnumbered by the Brexity , everything in Europe smells brigade.

Are you saying Sunak or his wife pays a lower proportion? I think you mean his wife.

You should clarify what you say and be more precise eg "Sunak's wife (who he does not control) pays a lower proportion of tax on her Indian share dividends than NHS staff pay on their salaries in the UK".

I will not be voting Conservative because they are a shower of shit but Sunak is not in charge of his wife's family wealth.

The Prime Minister Sunak pays a lower proprtion of his income in taxes than teachers and nurses do. It is fairly clear I would have thought given his wife does not have his name.

jasflowers · 04/01/2024 20:43

@Dorisbonson No the 22% refers to income from Sunaks own USA based investment fund, nothing to to do with his families earnings

Ah, you forgot the bestest ever policy yet. The one where my partner lives in my house for 2? Years and if we then split up, is entitled to some of MY HOUSE. The one I paid for, the one I pay all bills in, the one I pay literally any costs for and he pays not a penny towards. Theres a reason I didn't marry the man. And yet with one swoop starmer will break us up. Because I wont risk my home.

Do you have any evidence this is a Labour policy? Because it’s a new one on me.

PAYE tax rate will be the same for Sunak and non PAYE the same as everyone else in the same situation

I wouldn’t worry. It doesn’t mean much unless Labour are going to change the set up, which isn’t happening.

Didnt you listen to Starmers speech earlier?
I didnt, but heard him say it quite clearly.

YouJustDoYou · 04/01/2024 18:12

No. My girls (and I) would be even less safe under a Labour government, let alone the current rubbish Tory government.

Because women are so safe under a Tory government? With Cleverley and Raab and all the rest that we have put up with?

It only means the PM is comfortable increasing taxes on teachers and nurses, but payiny a smaller proportion of ta on his income than them.
If that isnt important do you, that is of course your choice.

One is perfectly safe when a little bit sedated.
Which is why it is perfectly lawful to drug your wife if she doesnt do as you want.

Labour are not changing the tax system beyond a few ridiculous offerings that won’t do much, so the same tax rates will apply.

Thats not quite true, they are looking into the differential between earned and unearned tax rates.
You ve no idea what Labour will do (though on womens rights you seem to think you do) e.g SureStart centres were not in Labours 1997 manifesto.

But regardless, Sunak pays less tax proportionately than a nurse or me!!

@Dorisbonson Chapeau!

vincettenoir · 04/01/2024 20:54

Yes. The economy is in a bad way so Labour aren't out there promising bells and whistles but I believe they will restore standards in public life.

cryinglaughing · 04/01/2024 20:55

No. Something quite disagreeable about Starmer.
It's going to be tough to decide which shower of shit to vote for.

I hope so.

I want to see ministers resign or be sacked when they screw up, this applies to all in public life.

I am delighted you have been able to study Labour's policies in such detail.
There was a poster earlier suggesting Labour did not have any.

Sure I follow what they say on sex based rights along with the many other informed women on FWR - thank god it exists.

And it’s not just these pro Labour threads for politics on mn with the same Labour pp on every one

Some seemed to think the Tories brought in the GRA so I’m not going with their uninformed views

Luckily there are other women posting who are actually informed and care.

How do you know there are Labour members on this thread?

2dogsandabudgie · 04/01/2024 21:01

jgw1 - You didn't answer my question, do you agree with Starmers view that it's not just women who have a cervix? It's a simple question which requires a yes or no answer.

BananaSplitsss · 04/01/2024 21:02

Newchapterbeckons · 04/01/2024 18:17

No. We are going to be bankrupt in 5 years. Angela and her cronies would have wrestled control from a very weak leader like Starmer - I give him max 12 months, maybe 16 months. The country will be led by Corbynites. They are just keeping their heads down and biding their time.

I don’t think people have any idea just how bad things can get. They have short memories of the overspending, spiralling economy and lack of competence.

Dymaxion · 04/01/2024 21:03

In 2017, Minister for Equalities Justine Greening considered reforms to the Gender Recognition Act to de-medicalise the process, with the principle of self-identification. One of Greening's successors, Penny Mordaunt, affirmed that the consultation on the Gender Recognition Act would come from the starting place that "transgender women are women".

Its not difficult to be excited by the exit of a government that thinks that drugging women is a bit of a laugh. Although it seems there are some willing to excuse such behaviour.

It seems you find it difficult to answer @2dogsandabudgie clearly

You and Starmer alike
