Dear god. How do US parents face sending their kids off every day to school?

SerendipityJane · 04/01/2024 17:08

I( hope somewhere someone won a sweepstake ... days into 2024 before there is a mass shooting. Although really it should have been in hours.

lesdeluges · 04/01/2024 17:08

I don't know how parents do it, well maybe they have no choice if they are working outside the home.

It would seem to me that homeschooling is popular for obvious reasons, but seems to be viable in SAHP households, usually large Christian/Mormon families. A generalization, I know, but still.

Nothing will change, if it didn't after Sandy Hook it never will

Polarized country that appears to be a difficult place to stay alive with the liberal gun laws.

SirenSays · 04/01/2024 17:10

Absolutely terrifying. My American friend bought special bullet proof backpacks for her teens for school. She worries every day.

BlusteryLake · 04/01/2024 17:14

Too many people in positions of power in the USA think it's preferable to use children as collateral damage than to restrict the ridiculously outdated "right to bear arms". Can't wait til they're all dead, as it doesn't seem as if these arseholes are being replaced by quite as many younger people.

FourChimneys · 04/01/2024 17:18

I think I read that being shot was the highest cause of death to USA teenagers, many of those being at school.

Difficult to have respect for a country which prioritises gun ownership over children's lives.

SerendipityJane · 04/01/2024 17:19

It's not that Americans can't change their laws

It's that they won't.

And clearly enough people are happy with the situation to leave it be.

C1N1C · 04/01/2024 17:20

Sad to say the genie is out of the bottle though.

Say America did ban them... Say 90% of the law-abiding citizens did hand them over... none of the criminals would. You'd then have a massively vulnerable 'better' part of society being preyed upon by the scum, ruthlessly.

There are no doubt stockpiles of weapons from which the criminals could last decades, and an easy underground market from which any school nut could still access weapons.

They're screwed and will remain screwed.

mindutopia · 04/01/2024 17:36

I’m American and I left the country as soon as I could get a visa to marry Dh and have never looked back. Amongst my friends, it’s just normal. They are used to being hypervigilent. I imagine it’s similar to how my South African friends live with the constant threat of violent crime, having security fences around their houses, not stopping at a traffic light after dark in some areas, etc. Not for me though!

Wednesdaysotherchild · 04/01/2024 17:39

Meh, they have chosen not to take action on gun control so I have little sympathy or interest any more.

You have little sympathy or interest for wounded school children?

I don't think the children who got shot really have a say in it.

I don't think this is true in the case of school shootings. Often the guns are acquired legally, sometimes by the parents, and then the troubled teenagers take them.

Generally it isn't a "criminal" slaughtering the kids in schools but a fellow student who until then has been a model citizen.

Pretty sure it isn't high school students choosing not to take action, judging by the recent protests.

sorrynotathome · 04/01/2024 18:01

If you're interested in this sort of thing, Malcolm Gladwell has a podcast called Revisionist History and he has recently done a special series on USA & guns. It's fascinating - one thing that I had no idea about is that the US is now extraordinarily good at treating gunshot wounds (even more so if you live in the white, rich areas of course). Their survival rates from GSW are therefore high and this masks the simply astronomical rates of gun related violence. Nobody collects data on how many people are actually shot in the US - only those who are shot and killed.

Bernieee · 04/01/2024 18:17

They would rather children die than give up guns. That’s it really. Having a gun means more to them than kids dying. I don’t think I could ever feel comfortable in that country again

That's both interesting and disturbing in equal measure. I remember reading some other statistics somewhere about how most toddler gun accidents don't even reach beyond the very local news because they're so "unremarkable" as news stories.

The kids? The kids haven't taken action? Am I misunderstanding you here?

Redshoeblueshoe · 04/01/2024 18:26

Apparently the 4th mass shooting this year according to Sky news

ChimneyPot · 04/01/2024 18:29

42,959 people died from gun violence in the US in 2023.
Only 1190 of those were cases where someone was defending themselves.
I don’t know how anyone can defend not bringing in gun control.
