Virgin River - does it get better?

All I’ve seen so far (3 episodes) is the tired cliche of city girl moves to small town and meets a love interest who’s lived there all his life. Seems obvious she’s going to struggle at work and to be accepted but clearly will succeed.

Do I persevere?

Yes

friskybivalves · 01/01/2024 23:11

It's a river of clichés. But still ultra watchable. For the scenery as much as anything. And her fairly awful wardrobe.

Splendidsunbird · 01/01/2024 23:14

Lol, no it carries on in the same vein. I found it enjoyable until the most recent series which is hammy acting and plot line drivel of the highest order, it was too much and I abandoned it

It's great. Just be prepared that even after 5 seasons only about 5 months have passed.

jellymaker · 01/01/2024 23:15

Depends what you like. It's an odd juxtaposition of extremely saccharine relationships set against a dark undertone of baddies. It feels like a soap opera to me. I have tried to keep going with it but I'm bored of the soap style story lines.

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 01/01/2024 23:15

Read the books instead. Soooo much better.

NeurodivergentBurnout · 01/01/2024 23:15

I gave up during season 3. Story line moved so slowly and seemed ridiculous.

BIWI · 01/01/2024 23:17

If you think Virgin River is bad, just try Chesapeake Shores!

Karrak · 01/01/2024 23:21

No ditch it. Complete tripe for all the reasons you mentioned. Like Anne With An E - doesn’t go anywhere.

NotAClueZ · 01/01/2024 23:30

Yes - like all these things the more you become familiar with the characters the more like 'friends you want to catch up with' they become.

VR is v entertaining because as well as the nice characters there are some corkers of annoying ones.

mondaytosunday · 01/01/2024 23:31

I watch it for Annette O'Toole. Love her! But the lead actress is a cliched bore (and she's accepted off the bat - no drama there).

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 01/01/2024 23:32

The local love interest reminds me of Paul Hollywood. Same strutting meaty masculinity.

It killed it dead for me.

Icantbedoingwithit · 01/01/2024 23:35

Way too sugary sweet for me. The Waltons on acid.

Letmegetoff · 01/01/2024 23:38

I gave up after the 2nd series, its really dull

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 02/01/2024 00:13

I loved it. But Season 5 not so much.

NoraBattysCurlers · 02/01/2024 00:27

I haven't watched it for ages, but I do have one question:

Is Charmaine still pregnant?

MadeForThis · 02/01/2024 00:29

She still has about 3 months to go!!!

minipie · 02/01/2024 00:31

No. It doesn’t change.

Try Firefly Lane - similar comfort watching but I much preferred it.

Singleandproud · 02/01/2024 00:38

Chesapeake Shores - Beautiful people in a beautiful new England beach town

Where the heart is - beautiful people in early 20th century mining town, young teacher moves West

If you don't like cheesy hallmark movies don't watch either

Gilded Age - American version of Downton

pikkumyy77 · 02/01/2024 00:40

I couldn’t stand VR but my daughters love it. They say in Season Three the heroine is suddenly given a personality so it does improve.

winebreeze · 02/01/2024 00:43

I love the mindlessness of it to wind down. Pp suggested firefly lane, that's much much better though

Yes, I started watching as I was going through life stresses and wanted an 'easy watch'. It started of slow but then picked up, and have some really good storylines now. I do like that any family young or old can come into the room whilst I'm watching, and I never have to pause of forward it due to anything inappropriate

Babla · 02/01/2024 00:55

Yes I love Virgin River

Ultimate comfort tv

Nup she's just had them

Teenagersscarethelivinshitoutofme · 02/01/2024 01:23

It's dreadful yet addictive, fabulous scenery and I think Martin Henderson is quite lovely.
