So sick of the constant rain…

There is torrential rain outside right now where I am (London). It sounds like a hurricane. But in general it feels like it has been a really grey and rainy winter - worse than usual…. Am I just imagining it or has it been really wet and miserable?

Pissing down again last night, roads are flooded, mud everywhere, grey skies and everything smells damp. Anyone who enjoys this is a sadist IMO.

Has anyone else noticed how much more windy it's become over the past few years too?? We all know the climate is changing - it has to or we would still be in an Ice Age - but it is being accelerated by humans. However most humans don't really want to stop being so mobile - just look at the number of planes in the sky at any time over USA, China, India etc - and the number of cars doing short journeys in built up areas ( under 2 miles) in places like the UK.

Pissing it down in Brisbane too with flood warnings.

It honestly scares the hell out of me. In my RL world everyone avoids talking about the climate crisis and be assured, it is a crisis. It's totally weird and does my head in tbh

I haven't used my favourite running routes in 6 months because ankle deep clay is barely slitherable, and not runnable.

Now the weather's getting past 10⁰C, the ĺawn's been getting tufty. I managed to get the mower out to take the tops off last week. ⅓ was un-mowably boggy with puddles in the flower beds, and even with a short session just taking the top off where needed, the rain was already coming back as I was packing up.

I generally like having a varied climate with seasons, but this doesn't feel like it. Perma-grey skies make me feel depressed rather than zen. Rain, wind and never ending mud make life harder. More faff (things like layering up to get out of the house). More psyching up to go out and get into nature. More cleaning to deal with the aftermath.

People that are used to gritting their teeth and getting on with life outdoors despite the weather are beyond fed up of it. It's now April; I want to be getting on with life not being snuggly wuggly with a blanket and hotty wotty chocyy or being splashy washy through puddles in my ickle puddle suit and wellies pretending I'm #makingmemories. (I just get fed up of the Hygge bunch pretending that shit weather isn't a thing)

And yes, I'm narked because it's been months since I fed my soul by running through the local countryside.

Yeah- I consider myself pretty stoic and I will run in wind and rain np but it's the mud- even with mud claw type shoes and waterproof socks a lot of trails are just not runnable. My friend slipped and fell into an electric fence. I've got a trail race next weekend and I never thought I'd be considering mud claws inn April!!

Is that unusual for this time of year? Australia has such extremes of heat and flooding now 😟

Apparently where I live east Scotland we are at 198% of the average rainfall for this time of the year.
Yep I'm fed up , the dogs fed up the garden is waterlogged and local roads are flooding .
However I suspect in later yrs with global warming we are going to be grateful for the rainfall.
I try and do all the things to reduce my climate footprint but the reality is scary .

I agree re the rain = water in years to come but too much rain can be very damaging. We need proper ways of storing it and exporting it to the places that will really need it, trouble is water is obviously very heavy.

Yeah, wait til the growing middle classes in the likes of China, India, Nigeria etc start wanting to travel the world and buy white goods and SUVs. I'm not sure smug Westerners have any right to deny them the lifestyle that we have enjoyed for the past 70 years.

When people talk about responses to climate change and say "We need to use less energy and we need to fly less" what they really mean is "You need to use less energy and you need to fly less"

I have friends that pearl clutch over climate change yet they have carbon footprints that would scare a daredevil. But but but they say, "I've cut down on long haul flights!" then you have a look under their coffee table and there's photo albums from holidays all over the world. Get in the bin.

It's been so miserable. I hate it. It makes me feel so, so down.

quizzys · 05/04/2024 11:56

And brace yourselves for Storm Kathleen, due any day now. Looks rough.

Dragonbed · 05/04/2024 23:07

I’m still absolutely fed up with it but a slight positive is that I’m enjoying dog walks I don’t normally do because they are too muddy because even a basic walk results in a load of dog and clothes washing so might as well enjoy the scenic routes!

It’s very worrying. Australia used to always have occasional extreme weather events, but friends and family tell me that now it’s constant. Where my parents live they have also had constant rain but there are concerns about a long drought in the future.

Absolutely pissing down (again) in the North east! Walks are a nightmare as everywhere is just a giant bog, just want a bit of sunshine 🙏 😭

fisherking1 · 09/04/2024 12:31

Horrible weather again...

IwishIdidntlikesugar · 09/04/2024 14:54

Wind, wind, wind (and rain).
