So sick of the constant rain…

There is torrential rain outside right now where I am (London). It sounds like a hurricane. But in general it feels like it has been a really grey and rainy winter - worse than usual…. Am I just imagining it or has it been really wet and miserable?

Another one fed up of it here. It's not even like it's just been winter that's been wet I feel like all it did in 2023 was rain! I'm bloody fed up of wearing the same waterproof coat and boots on an almost daily basis as everytime I leave the house it's pissing it down.

YorkieTheRabbit · 31/12/2023 09:56

Early in December we had four days of really cold weather, a little snow and lots of frost, it was wonderful. Apart from that it’s more or less rained since October and been very windy too.
Parts of the garden are a mud bath.
From a very soggy Yorkshire 🌧️

Bluevelvetsofa · 31/12/2023 10:05

It’s been an entire year of wind and rain. We had floods a few weeks ago and could barely get out of the village, because routes were being pumped out. The promenade is blocked at one point because there are still pipes pumping out. And still it rains. Tree roots are weakened and the number of trees and branches that have toppled is extensive.

IheartNiles · 31/12/2023 10:46

Almost relentless misery. When you get a glimpse of blue sky it feels like that scene in the matrix where they briefly break out of the gloom.

DatingDinosaur · 31/12/2023 10:55

Yes, had the torrential hurricane-like rain last night/this morning too. It's quite nice blue skies today though so I'm forfeiting getting the decs down for a nice walk.

More rain forecast for later (oh joy) - I just hope it's not like last night's deluge ⛈

Michiru · 31/12/2023 13:01

I'd be stuffed without my SAD lamp this year and have had it running for 4 hours on some of the rainiest days.

Constant rain makes me miserable; I need sunlight and warmth and there has been precious little of that this year. Here's to hoping for a decent spring and summer in 2024, otherwise the garden, which has been thoroughly neglected this year, will become unmanageable.

Malarandras · 31/12/2023 13:03

Here We have a word for the rain, constant greyness and all round weather miserableness which sums it up perfectly: dreach. It is depressing yes!

KittensandPerverts · 31/12/2023 13:04

I'm liking it. Suits my current mood perfectly. 😂

Climate change. Hotter summers, warmer and wetter winters

At least if we get a warm and sunny summer that will make up for it a bit!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 31/12/2023 14:43

Here in North Yorkshire we had a miserable summer too. We were under the east wind for most of the time when the rest of the country was having a heatwave. We got a few nice days at the end of June after a late, cold, miserable spring, then come the first of July it started to rain. And with the exception of maybe a week in September and a hot start to October, it's rained ever since.

I redesigned and replanted my front garden, which had been lots of pots that I was having trouble keeping alive the last couple of years. It was hard to water them all, so I switched up for a gravel garden filled with sedums and sempervivums and other drought-proof plants. It's rained every day since I finished, so I think it might be my fault.

TheSunIsShiningAndTheSkyIsBlue · 31/12/2023 14:44

It's still better than snow and ice. I just think it's winter, and yes it has rained everyday here and been very windy and grey but some parts of UK are having it a lot worse.

notprincehamlet · 31/12/2023 15:01

I need to go to the shop but I haven't got a dry coat or pair of shoes to put on! Yesterday I ended up scooping the ingredients for New Year's Day's dinner off the pavement because the M&S carrier bag I'd just put them in dissolved in the rainHmm

guineverehadgreeneyes · 31/12/2023 15:12

South West, here. We've actually had a dry and sunny afternoon, today. But mostly it just rains and rains with howling gales and everywhere is muddy and the house is getting mildew in places we've never had mildew before because we've had so much rain since the autumn.

Crikeyalmighty · 31/12/2023 15:17

@TheSunIsShiningAndTheSkyIsBlue ooh I'm in Stockholm for NY and much prefer it minus 4 and snowing , and not windy - my neck arthritis prefers it too- it's wind and rain that gets me

Coastalcreeksider · 31/12/2023 15:29

It's having to have washing drying inside the house that really gets to me when it is so wet and windy outside. It's my biggest hate.

I never dry clothes on a radiator so washing just hangs on the airer in the utility room until it's dry enough to go in the tumble dryer to air it so I can put it away.

I can't do anything in the garden either as it's so wet and claggy... 😡

IClaudine · 31/12/2023 15:38

Agree about laundry, such a pain. My laundry basket is overflowing.

Theoldwoman · 31/12/2023 15:54

Muststopeating · 31/12/2023 08:41

Well it could be worse .. instead of just being a bit wet or it being a bit noisy you could be in North East Scotland.

My husband has been digging ditches and trenches in an effort to keep the rain out of our house everyday for a week, including Christmas.

Thousands of homes, including ours, have been without power, some for nearly a week. In rural Scotland no power often means no water (private supplies) and no mobile signal/4g, obviously also means no heating.

On the day it was particularly bad I had to take my 2 year old to have her dislocated elbow reset. While we were in the hospital all the roads closed and I cannot even describe to you how horrendous and long the trip home was. We were lucky to get home at all, hundreds of people were stranded completely and so many cars suffered catastrophic damage (that insurance won't cover).

I know the constant rain is depressing, but perhaps a bit of perspective of how bad it could be (and really we still don't have it that bad here) might help pull you out of that slump a little?

That sounds really tough. I hope your wee girls arm heals well. Sending lots of healing vibes to her.

TheThingIsYeah · 31/12/2023 15:55

I live in one of the driest parts of the country, we normally only get 600mm of rain but this year it's pissed it down on more days than not. Even on the days when it starts off without a cloud in the sky like today it eventually pisses it down - as it is doing right now.

I'm not really interested in the climate change angle. I get tired of saying, "ok what can be done about it?" only for the response to be "We need to do x,y,z" when what they really mean is "YOU need to do x,y,z"

backbritishfarming · 31/12/2023 16:13

Bloody sick of it, everywhere is such a mess and all this water means whatever crops we all managed to back in the land during a very wet autumn/drilling season aren't doing their best because every bloody field is flooded or like a bleeding quagmire.

I empathise with you @Muststopeating massively. That must be downright awful the fear of having a flooded house.

Fae1234 · 02/01/2024 14:49

Yes. I'm beyond fed up of it. South wales here and yet another storm has just started. Cue anxiety about the fence falling down again and the big tree at the back right when we are about to put our house up for sale. It also means the older of the two severn bridges will be closed AGAIN which causes traffic chaos over here. I just want to go for a nice dry, crisp walk to brighten my spirits. The garden is a mud bath. I can't remember the last time we had some sun... when we were in Spain in October maybe? It feels like it's rained since the beginning of July.

BooseysMom · 02/01/2024 15:15

We moved from a hillside rented cottage to a new build house on the flat and I wish we were back on the hills. The garden is basically clay/mud laid on builders rubble. It doesn't drain and our new greenhouse is flooded like a quagmire. In the summer the ground bakes solid and the winter it's a bog!

fussychica · 02/01/2024 15:23

West Wiltshire here and the rain has been pretty constant though we are definitely more fortunate than many areas. Blowing a gale outside. Since I came back from Spain during the last week of October we have had 2 sunny days and I made sure I made the most of both of them. I don't mind winter but this is just so miserable every bloody day. Usually I havea few trips booked by now but I've only got something planned for May. Not sure I can hang on that long if it stays like this.

piscofrisco · 02/01/2024 15:27

It's just unendingly miserable. The weather says it will get colder towards the end of the week maybe? I'd love to see some Frost or something just for a change from the bloody rain and mud.

Coincidentally · 02/01/2024 15:29

Windows rattling mightily here now.
Schadenfreude because my ex who I advised strongly not to get a puppy (because he is irresponsible and unreliable) is now at his wits end as the pup will not go out in the rain.

countrygirl99 · 02/01/2024 15:37

I live in a dry part of the country. Currently only 1 road of 4 out of the village is open due to flooding.
