Please help settle a family dispute! If you are making a cheese and pickle sandwich, do you need to butter the bread first?

No.

Nomorecoconutboosts · 29/12/2023 11:01

Of course you do

McConkeysPlate · 29/12/2023 11:01

Yep

Personally, I do, it's a sensory thing. Plus the cheese must be grated. Hth

Nomorecoconutboosts · 29/12/2023 11:02

although some people seem to think that things like sauce, pickle or peanut butter replace actual butter

ErrolTheRednosedDragon · 29/12/2023 11:02

If you're eating it immediately the butter is optional. If it's going to be eaten later then the butter is needed to stop the pickle making the bread soggy.

PGmicstand · 29/12/2023 11:03

Yes, it stops the filling leaking through the bread.

AlisonDonut · 29/12/2023 11:03

Yes, and the pickle needs to go on top of the cheese.

100%

Yes butter is essential. Grated cheese makes the pickle/cheese combo work better also imho

Crazyhousewife23 · 29/12/2023 11:04

Yes, the same as with crackers

Multipleexclamationmarks · 29/12/2023 11:05

On 1 piece of bread is butter, on the other pickle. Cheese in the middle.

PickledMuffin · 29/12/2023 11:05

I don't, but i'm not a butter fan.

Ostryga · 29/12/2023 11:05

Of course. White bread, butter, grated extra mature on one side, pickle on the other. Slap together and MUST be cut into triangles.

LaurieStrode · 29/12/2023 11:06

Bit of mustard here

bobby81 · 29/12/2023 11:07

Yes!

ValkyrieAssassin · 29/12/2023 11:09

If using pickle or mayo in a sandwich i spread both sides of the bread with the relevant wet ingredient. Otherwise things fall out. But not butter. (Plain ham or cheese with real butter though is a glorious thing).

GoodVibesHere · 29/12/2023 11:09

Yes I always butter a sandwich. Why would cheese & pickle be any different to a tuna mayo/ham/chicken sandwich?

See I would not butter those either. My favourite sandwich in the world is a proper Australian egg and lettuce sandwich (using shredded iceberg lettuce). No butter. Just a (substantial) smear of egg mayo on each slice then the lettuce in the middle.

christmaspawpaws · 29/12/2023 11:11

I do mayo on one side and pickle on the other
Fed up of trying to spread butter!

WandaWonder · 29/12/2023 11:12

Yes absolutely

BooBooBaloo · 29/12/2023 11:13

100% yes. Pickle on both sides would be pickle overkill, and without butter one side is just dry bread with cheese on 😱

Lbd · 29/12/2023 11:14

Butter always, anyone who doesn’t is a wrongun!
