Please help settle a family dispute! If you are making a cheese and pickle sandwich, do you need to butter the bread first?

I life cheese and pickle sandwiches but it’s just a bit of pickle on top of cheese

Cotswoldbee · 29/12/2023 11:15

No!

But then again I have never eaten butter (or marg or similar) so maybe that makes a difference.

although some people seem to think that things like sauce, pickle or peanut butter replace actual butter

Peanut butter does replace butter

Pickle isn’t rich enough to

Surely this is obvious…

HoppingPavlova · 29/12/2023 11:26

Yes, bread must be buttered.

AgnesX · 29/12/2023 11:27

Yes, butter is integral to a sandwich ( and will stop the pickle side of the bread from going soggy).

berrypop · 29/12/2023 11:28

No butter here. Pickle on one slice, mayo on the other, cheese in the middle. And optional cheese and onion crisps for added crunch.

aintnospringchicken · 29/12/2023 11:28

I hate cheese and pickle sandwiches ,but I would butter the bread like any other sandwich

LuluBlakey1 · 29/12/2023 11:29

Bread should always be buttered and with slightly salted butter.

GrumpyGinger · 29/12/2023 11:31

Dairylea spread.
Extra mature cheddar.
Pickle (or chutney, preferably)

lavenderlou · 29/12/2023 11:34

Yes or the sandwich doesn't stick together and would be dry. Pickle is not fatty enough to substitute for butter.

Personally, I do, it's a sensory thing. Plus the cheese must be grated. Hth

This. Butter, grated cheese, pickle.

Allthecatseverywhereallatonce · 29/12/2023 11:50

No need for butter but then I don't really have butter with much except Marmite, otherwise it doesn't spread.

Goodwitch9 · 29/12/2023 12:11

Strong feelings, we have! Okay, answer me this then: brown or white, grated or sliced?

Always butter in a sandwich unless it is jam or sweet spread.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 29/12/2023 12:16

My ex was a no-butter man.

Notice how I said my ex.

kitsuneghost · 29/12/2023 12:18

No. Butter and pickle would be disgusting

MsMaraschino · 29/12/2023 12:22

I’m not keen on butter so don’t for my own sandwiches, but I do when I’m making for others.

Howmanysleepsnow · 29/12/2023 12:25

So, from the top down (like a diagram but with words):

White bread
pickle
sliced cheddar
butter
white bread

MrsFloof · 29/12/2023 12:34

White bread, cheddar cut from the cheese pickle - no butter, can also do grated but tends to fall out. Also have pickled onions and pickled red cabbage on the side and apple slices.

Sparkletastic · 29/12/2023 13:41

Of course. You need to waterproof the bread. I can't abide a soggy sandwich.

Tarkan · 29/12/2023 13:43

Always butter first for me even if there's something like mayo in a sandwich. The thought of anything other than butter touching the bread really freaks me out. Blush

Candycurrantbun · 29/12/2023 13:44

White bread, butter, grated cheese so the pickle mingles with the cheese.
