Genuine question - can trans women experience cramps during their ‘time of the month’?

Picklemeyellow · 29/12/2023 10:42

This is a genuine question as I am baffled.

I looking on Tik Tok last night (don’t judge me, I’m addicted lol)and I notice on my For You section there is often a trans women doing live Q&A’s. I stopped and watched for a while, out of curiosity tbh as DH has a couple of transgender people in his family and I do try to remain as ‘on the fence’ as possible with this subject.

However, this person on TT said something which does not make much sense to me.

They were saying they take HRT and this gives them ‘a time of the month’ when they experience a very emotional dip and have crying spells and feel low etc. I suppose that may make some sense due to the hormones they take but then they went on to say they also experience cramping during this time and started rubbing their lower tummy in the area where a woman’s uterus is located.
It was difficult to establish why this happens because anyone actually questioning this gets blocked and only those agreeing with them get to stay to ask questions! I appreciate they probably receive some very negative replies but blocking doesn’t answer the questions to people who really would like to know.

I genuinely can not understand where the cramps would originate in a person without female anatomy?

As someone who has been under the gynae department for 20+ years, has had to live their live around horrendous periods, has had endless hysteroscopies and uterine polyp removals, ovulation so painful I couldn’t sit properly, a failed uterine ablation, going through an awful perimenopause and now, at 50 only just discovering this is probably all due to the fact I actually have endometriosis and adenomyosis and have been gas lit for all this time having being told that some women just have awful periods etc, I more than understand where my cramps and pain come from. From my shit malfunctioning uterus and hormones which have never been my friend.

But where would a trans woman’s ‘time of the month’ cramps come from? What part of their body cramps due to the addition of female hormones? I’ve tried googling this but there’s very little. Can the hormones cramp the muscles or bowel in this area or something similar?

Period cramps are the uterus contracting to expel the regenerative layer of the uterus's lining. If you do not have a uterus ...

Of course men who pretend to be women can pretend to have periods.

More rubbish from Modibodi. I think they are trying to increase sales by widening their demographic.

my god what tosh

i am not having anything to do with modi body moving forwards

SquirrelSoShiny · 29/12/2023 12:22

They will likely be experiencing gas in their bowel. This is nothing to do with hormones but will be because medically speaking they are 'full of shit'.

The answer is do women who have has hysterectomies and take HRT feel this?

No it isn’t.

Women who have had hysterectomies still have female endocrine systems and female anatomy. Having had a hysterectomy disrupts that in various ways, which may require them the take HRT - with emphasis on replacement.

Women who have had a hysterectomy are not the same as men. No matter what hormones biological men might take, they are not the same as women who’ve had to have an organ removed for medical reasons.

Cantab54321 · 29/12/2023 12:22

I genuinely need HRT and cannot get it, as there are shortages. Several friends in a similar situation. Maybe we need to say we are Trans, rather than well into perimenopause.

supercalie · 29/12/2023 12:24

It's weird to be upset by a complete stranger who doesn't even know you exist

@Whyyoulyingfor because people who don't know you exist can have a huge and negative impact on your life. For example, trans women claiming to be women and people defending them means someone can't sit at their desk and say "no they aren't" without likely losing their job, career, probably get lots of threats, possible attacks.

If transwomen were women, people would just say "women are women".

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 29/12/2023 12:27

Surely taking hormones would cause issues, as pushing something into a body just to alter it for a want, rather than a need, is surely doomed to cause more harm than good to the body, isn't it? Another here having suffered for years and been ignored with gynae issues, with the medical establishment brushing off my real issues as something I needed to deal with!! I worry that this 'narrative' will impact on funding for women's health and for far too long, women have not had the attention / money / resources given to their specific physiological / health needs, with the assumption that research on men fits all and we now know it most certainly doesn't! I fear that being able to choose to be female is another way of marginalizing us, as other prejudices and issues have disappeared and been eroded, it appears that the pharma industry (who obviously benefit hugely from this new 'need') and other organisations that wave the flag for it, need to replace one hurdle with another. I truely believe that we should all be able to be 'us' and true to yourself, but I can't go along with the play acting / role playing.

Maybe I’m the minority then. I couldn’t care less if someone was transgender, gay, straight, non binary etc. It does not impact my life and as long as they are not hurting anyone else I do not see the problem. My point was; everyone seems to be so full of hate about absolutely everything or looking for things to be offended about constantly. It’s tedious.

Funny how they always get tummy aches and never fucking javelin arse #endo.

Or fanny daggers

TooOldForThisNonsense · 29/12/2023 12:32

Of course not

they don’t have a uterus.

Fed up with these ridiculous attention seeking men

ForTonightGodisaDJ · 29/12/2023 12:35

This is ridiculous but there is no point getting angry because they are sadly pathetic.

I keep trying to keep up. I think I’m up to date and suddenly other terminology comes along to fox me.

Can someone tell me the difference between non binary and agender please? As per that advert.

Theyarehere · 29/12/2023 12:36

No they can’t have period pains because they aren’t having periods. Someone’s identity may not impact directly on me but it certainly can indirectly impact me negatively. Just reading responses here about access to HRT and other womens services that have always been chronically underfunded shows me this.

Goatymum · 29/12/2023 12:36

MistyGreenAndBlue · 29/12/2023 10:57

Firstly they are NOT on HRT. There is no "replacement" of hormones that they never produced naturally in the first place. Lie no 1

Lie no 2 - the cross sex hormones they ARE taking do not cause a "time of the month" as they do not cycle the way natural hormone production does in women.

These are men with a fetish. They do not cramp or bleed or suffer PMT. They DO fetishise menstruation to the point of stealing used bloodied tampons and shoving them up their arse - they don't even try to hide that they do this.
Playing at having a "time of the month" is just a part of this. It's disgusting and offensive but apparently we are all transphobic bigots for being unhappy about this. 🤷‍♀️

They put bloodied tampons up their arse? Surely not! Anyone who does this is mentally unstable.
I’m fairly on the fence with trans, I have to be a dd identifies as non-binary, but this takes the piss. It sort of just ‘proves’ than men can’t be women - they can pretend all they like, but they’re not women who have to put up with the period shite for 40-odd years.

MaidOfSteel · 29/12/2023 12:37

MintyfreshSW · 29/12/2023 11:12

Every day is a school day

Some trans women undergo gender-affirming treatment in the form of feminising hormones. These hormones can result in a range of physical and emotional symptoms, including:

  • Anxiety
  • Appetite changes
  • Bloating due to water retention
  • Cramping
  • Tiredness and fatigue
  • Listlessness
  • Mood swings
These symptoms may occur at the same time each month, just like premenstrual syndrome (PMS). For many trans women, this is their period.

This lot should be done under trades descriptions laws. I haven't opened the link but are they trying to sell something by any chance?

I don't know. Most sensible people don't like being lied to, or being expected to participate in a series of lies, and being punished with the loss of their jobs, etc, for not going along with it all and perpetuating a series of lies.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 29/12/2023 12:39

Rainbowshit · 29/12/2023 11:48

Sorry I disagree that it's harmless.

Indulging these people in their delusions has ended with females being raped in prisons, hospitals female toilets.

It has ended with our sports, prizes ,scholarships being taken by males cosplaying as females.

It has to stop. Now.

Exactly.

the “harmless courtesy” of pronouns etc is a power grab by misogynistic men

Well, obviously it hasn’t impacted your life (yet).
I asked for hrt from the ages of 44-50 and was constantly denied it because my GP said I wasn’t yet in perimenopause despite having endless symptoms. Yet my dh nieces’ father came out as trans at the age of 40 and was given hormones straight away. Female hormones for a male body which has never experienced oestrogen or progestogen and prescibed straight away because they said they feel like they are the opposite sex. I was simply asking for hormones to top up those I am losing and was denied that. So yes, it does effect me.

Sorry, really naive of me at 50 years old but are they all receiving these hormones on the NHS?
I’d be pissed off if they are. From the age of 44 I was back and forth to the GP complaining of peri symptoms only to be told it’s all anxiety and not peri as I wasn’t having night sweats (although endless other symptoms). Was only offered HRT this year and now told I shouldn’t take it because of the endometriosis diagnosis and been told it’ll be at least an 18 month wait for a hysterectomy!

Many of them receive hormones on the NHS, others pay private online places like Gender GP, or get them off dodgy providers on the internet.

If they are receiving NHS treatment they can also get free laser hair removal, which is denied to women with PCOS.

NHS speech therapy to practise lady talking is also considered 'gender affirming care' and In some areas they can even access make up lessons for free.

It's a fucking shitshow of madness.

”Menstrual cramps happen when a chemical called prostaglandinmakes your uterus contract (tighten up). During menstruation, prostaglandin levels are higher, which means your uterus contracts more strongly.”

Uterus: Anatomy, Function, Size, Position & Conditions

Your uterus is a pear-shaped organ in people assigned female at birth (AFAB). It plays a critical role in menstruation, fertility and pregnancy.

Why even mention gay and straight in this context? Could it be that you’re trying to frame GC feminists as homophobes? That won’t wash. Plenty of the GC feminists that post here are themselves gay/bisexual. The vast majority of people are not homophobic. I don’t care who others sleep with or have relationships with- it’s none of my business and has no impact on my life.

But when men insist they are women and want to appropriate the difficult parts of being female- yes, that does impact me and all other women. I certainly was not ‘looking for something to be offended about’. Was in fact quite happy minding my own business until it became impossible to ignore what some of these men are up to.
