I can't stand DH's crunching

chompargh · 28/12/2023 18:03

Crunch and like cavernous noises it's awful it makes me physically react I can feel myself tensing up and getting angry. What's wrong with me?! Is it hormones? I used to be ok until about 3 years ago.

Honeymoon's over then!

Santaisscouringindeedfornewjob · 28/12/2023 18:08

I actually had a TV put on the wall for background noise when we eat..

Neitheronethingnortheother · 28/12/2023 18:10

Loop earbuds are your friend and/or music when you eat

If it was fine until 3 years ago is he having issues breathing through his nose now (and therefore eating with his mouth more open) he might have polyps

Gowlett · 28/12/2023 18:10

My DH sort of sucks his food into his mouth, like a mini vacuum, even when it’s not soup. Just put the spoon in!!!

Justcallmebebes · 28/12/2023 18:11

OMG just taken my stepdad home after 2 days staying. Thought I could merrily kill him. Chomping, smacking his lips noisily and snorting and the worst, whistling as he breathes

You have my sympathies as I couldn't cope with this full time. I had to take much time out in the bathroom

This! I have it! I can't stand the sound of lip smacking, blowing raspberries, kissing, slurping etc. It gives me a rage like no other (and I am a very calm person). Hate this condition but it is real

Ugh. My DH does this too. How can you slurp perfectly normal and hard food like pizza or a steak or a roast potato or whatever?!

Gives me the rage too. We have the TV on as well I'm afraid...

Can it come on suddenly? I remember as a teen being annoyed by my dad eating but then it seemed to go away so I just put it down to being a teen.

I put the TV on. I feel so bad.

How can I stop it. Do you think maybe I need a hearing test?

It's like a nasal basey noise rather than a slurpy noise my dsd does the slurping so I know what you mean though

OP posts:
superplumb · 29/12/2023 06:59

Yeah husband is the same ..it's like he has excess of saliva in his mouth.
My dad slurps his tea it's fucking gross.
It never used to bother me but deffo over the last few years it's got worse. I'm 45 and peri
I read it gets worse as you enter peri and meno. Not sure if that's true or not but it's awful. When my husband eats something hard like granola I need to leave the room

Sausagenbacon · 29/12/2023 07:03

Can I add grunting?
My husband grunts when he sits down. And grunts when he stands up.
Maddening.
And of course I'm perfect.

Unabletomitigate · 29/12/2023 07:26

I can't remember the source, but I listened to a podcast about hormonal changes in women. When we are young and fertile all our hormones are the one pushing creating and maintaining peace and harmony in relationships. Makes sense. The as we get older, these hormones drop. So, our reactions as we get older are actually a truer reflection of how annoying and incompetent the people in our lives are. Joke.
Mine has a blocked nose, and ate some chocolate on the soda last night. The noises were disgusting. But at what point can you tell another adult that they don't know how to eat and breathe at the same time?

Remmy123 · 29/12/2023 08:08

I am like this extremely sensitive to noises by someone eating, breathing loudly - my husband keeps clearing his throat it's driving me crazy. I had my sister in law over and my brother is a terribly noisey eater she said she barely notices!!

I hate being like this 😬

MeditatationMum · 29/12/2023 08:10

You're not on your own! My DP makes slurping noises when he's eating. Sometimes it doesn't bother me but other times, I seam to hone in on it and it really winds me up! To add to it, my MIL actually talks with her mouthful which is just gross.
When I was a kid, we used to call my mum 'table manner mania' because she was always having a go at us if we spoke with our mouths full or had our elbows on the table etc... I've now become my mother 😂

FlamMabel · 29/12/2023 08:11

Totally with you OP. I actually eat in a different room now to maintain harmony otherwise meal times were just horrendous and we'd argue.

chompargh · 29/12/2023 08:11

Is there anything I can do?

ThePlantKiller · 29/12/2023 08:17

Same here OP. My DH swallows and eats noisily but I think it's an airway issue with him tbh. I barely noticed before, but in the last year or so (since peri hit) I spend a good part of the month feeling pissed off at him over it. I also find myself at times copying some of the noises he makes, like some kind of weird coping mechanism 😳

Gliblet · 29/12/2023 08:18

Ugh, yep. DH does the ridiculously loud crunching thing, the trying to suck his food off the spoon as soon as its near his face thing, and occasionally a weird grunty breathing thing. I swear he's got louder - bigger mouthfuls perhaps... I try and make sure there's some kind of background noise I can focus on instead of being forced to appreciate every nuance of the sound of him chomping on anything like peanuts.

Howbizzare22 · 29/12/2023 08:20

I’m so glad I’m single when I read stuff like this 😂🤣
Earplugs.

This is usually an age thing? Very annoying 🤦🏼‍♀️

Mine is far, far worse when I am stressed.

My OH slurps everything at home but nothing when we are out.

Sometimes I want to throw things at him for being gross, when less stressed I don't care.

What Is Misophonia?

Misophonia is a strong dislike or hatred of certain sounds. Learn more from WebMD about this unusual condition, from symptoms to treatment.
