I can't stand DH's crunching

chompargh · 28/12/2023 18:03

Crunch and like cavernous noises it's awful it makes me physically react I can feel myself tensing up and getting angry. What's wrong with me?! Is it hormones? I used to be ok until about 3 years ago.

I actually lost my shit at Dh over some dry roasted peanuts the other night. He generally doesn't talk with his mouth full, except nuts which he sort of holds at the back of his mouth and speaks with his teeth together (hard to explain)

Ds2 and I have horrendous misophonia - ds is worse. When younger he sometimes used to actually have to leave the room when Dh was eating and there were certain friends he couldn't invite for tea.

Why so many men seem to eat like pigs and cause the problem in the first place seems to be another issue though....

ThePlantKiller · 29/12/2023 08:43

Has anyone brought the issue up with their DH before? What did they say? I'm tempted to request DH goes to GP to have it investigated as the signs are pointing to an airway issue but I'm not sure he would go

LividStrike · 29/12/2023 08:46

I have misophonia.

It’s triggered worse by certain people and certain situations.

My ex didn’t trigger it before he was an almost ex. Now I can’t even be in the room with him while he eats. (Or any other time, the twat)

KinS24 · 29/12/2023 08:47

I’ll raise you the work colleague at the next desk who is addicted to stinky crisps eaten with her mouth open. She likes to crunch them loudly then masticate them all around into a lip smacking mush followed by a gulp. Twice a day.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 29/12/2023 08:57

Howbizzare22 · 29/12/2023 08:20

I’m so glad I’m single when I read stuff like this 😂🤣
Earplugs.

Well it also makes me glad to be single, but not because the sound of other people eating has ever bothered me. Only because we all have to eat, and we all make some noise, and the thought of someone glaring hatefully at me while I eat toast or - god forbid - crisps is awful.

ThequalityoftheReps · 29/12/2023 08:35

Advice above, loop ear plugs.
Research them they arent like regular ear plugs. ( there are many types you want the filtering kibd(

Thank you

I see your dry roasted peanuts and raise you twiglets

Those loop things look amazing. I struggle with crowd noise too

Onacuctustree · 29/12/2023 09:26

Mine was a quite nice eater.
He had the nose blowing problem.
So so loud and completely unnecessary.
Got rid ...

Schoolrunmumbun · 29/12/2023 09:35

My DP lived in Korea for a few years before I met him and adopted the "Korean eating style" (according to my DP this is how Korean people eat). If you've seen the Korean movie Parasite you'll have seen it, when someone eats a bowl of noodles. Basically my DP would put the fork full of food near his lips then suck really hard so the lump of food would rapidly slurp into his mouth with a big squelch. He would do it with all food, wet or dry. It was absolutely disgusting and I was gobsmacked. He didn't do it at first/ on dates but when relaxed and at home after we moved in together he said it was Korean style eating, the most correct and delicious way to eat food and I was wrong to be appalled. It drove me round the bend to the point where I told him I wouldn't eat at the table with him anymore unless he stopped it. He sort of accepted that it wasn't acceptable in our culture (UK) to make those noises and he doesn't do it anymore around me.

His other noise crimes are:
Awful, awful snoring and won't go to the doctors. We both love separate bedrooms now.
Weird extreme sniffing that resonates his whole throat
Screaming when he sneezes

gocompare · 29/12/2023 10:05

I have misophonia.

I hate it.

I can't sit with my DH to eat unless there is background noise or other people etc.

And his loud breathing. Just fuck off and breathe quietly

PuffyShirt · 29/12/2023 10:08

No matter what he’s eating, my husband makes it sound like he’s eating gravel. We can’t eat without background music or noise because of it, otherwise I’ll kill him.

gamerchick · 29/12/2023 10:09

chompargh · 29/12/2023 08:11

Is there anything I can do?

Background noise is the only thing you can do OP. Music or the telly.

hatesloudchewers · 29/12/2023 10:15

We all call my DH ‘cave mouth’ because we can all be eating the same thing but somehow he sounds like he is wired up to a PA system.

It bothers me and one other of the kids the most because we have raging misophonia. I’ve had to move train carriages due to someone eating a boiled sweet and it sounding like an army of vaginas marching through mud. I’ve had to leave the staff room because someone is sucking on chicken bones and lip smacking and it arouses this whole body feeling of disgust and rage in me. I feel like I’m being physically violated. It’s horrible and I hate that I feel like this.

I wear loop ear plugs A Lot. I’ve read taking magnesium supplements can help.

whatsappdoc · 29/12/2023 10:26

Everything that has been said plus AAAAH AAAAAH AAH when yawning and the choking, drowning noises with a mouthful of toothpaste. I can't quite put into words the sound of the actual brushing, if only he'd use an electric toothbrush which would at least drown out some of the torture.

'An army of vaginas marching through mud' sorry but despite understanding your pain this had me howling 😂😂😂

Sausagenbacon · 29/12/2023 10:34

actually, having moaned about my DH grunting (yes, probably an age thing, as he's 70), I snore. Loudly. and he's never complained.

SuitYouSir · 29/12/2023 10:37

I hate how misophonia makes me feel angry at my extremely considerate and quiet-eating DH. I’ll look at him and his mouth is closed, he’s eating small bites, not chewing overly loudly but still I can hear it and the rage continues.

but nothing beats my dads disgusting performance with boiled sweets.

Yes, same here. That's why I don't say anything, just leave the room or put my fingers in my ears!

What is it with boiled sweets? People can’t seem to eat them without all the wet squatching and sucking noises. It’s disgusting.

I have to turn the TV down for a lot of kissing too. There they are these two actors making some kind of sexy scene we are supposed to feel titillated by and I’m doing a sick into my own mouth.

Gliblet · 29/12/2023 13:54

@hatesloudchewers noisy kissing scenes definitely give me the ick, as do cooking shows where the chef feels obliged to slurp, crunch, smack, gulp and then through a mouthful of whatever they've just shovelled in, assure us that it's one step down from licking an angel. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, I'm glaring at you...

Banoffeepie21 · 29/12/2023 13:56

Those of you who have tried Loop earbuds, which model? My husband has misophonia and we haven't found any ear buds that work yet, other than noise cancelling ones which he uses with his devices.

hatesloudchewers · 29/12/2023 15:23

I have experience pro with the extra inners that lose another 5db of sound. You can still hear but it turns the volume down on everything. I can’t wear full earplugs because if I can’t hear ANYTHING I feel anxious and unsafe.

My DH has ordered the new Switch ones, so will report back when he’s tried them.
