Do you work the period of time between Christmas and New Year?

Do you work 27-30th, or take it off? Just curious. I’ve always worked it but this year wish I’d booked it off as Christmas has flown by

I am this year. Partly because I'd prefer to have it next year because of how it falls. Not taking this year gives me priority for next.

The only small annoyance is that my gym has decided to close in the evening so I'm having a forced rest!

mrstea301 · 26/12/2023 20:40

I'm just working tomorrow then off the rest. We have a lot of deadlines to meet so don't want to leave my team on their own for the whole time! Would love to have the whole time off tho. Maybe next year!

blondieminx · 26/12/2023 20:41

Yes always work it, as I prefer to take my annual leave across summer.

I'm working it as would prefer to save the leave days. I'll be WFH and it'll be very quiet. Great time to catch up 😃😃. Tbh I find the time between Christmas and new year a bit dull anyway.

RedSnail · 26/12/2023 20:42

Yes working it all, save leave for when there’s things I want to do

GenXisthebest · 26/12/2023 20:42

Before having kids I used to work, as it's a nice time to be in the office when it's so quiet. But now I have kids I usually take it off.

Littlebitpsycho · 26/12/2023 20:43

I'm lucky, office shuts over Xmas but we don't have to use annual leave. Finished lunchtime on December 22nd and back 2nd Jan (not-for-profit education sector)

Itsbeginningtolookalotlike · 26/12/2023 20:43

I'm a childminder and stay open if parents need me. This year no one does so I have the whole week off 😁

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 26/12/2023 20:43

Working- horrid time of year to waste leave on. Crap weather, skink and exhausted spoilt children :)

gamerchick · 26/12/2023 20:44

Yup and I'm covering others AL on top.

CirreltheSquirrel · 26/12/2023 20:44

I'm working tomorrow but not the rest of it. I'd rather use holiday when the weather is good, and the bank holidays give me enough days off, but my OH has a forced shutdown so I usually do a mix of WFH and properly off. (No kids though!)

Branleuse · 26/12/2023 20:44

Yes I'm back at work tomorrow. I was lucky to get Christmas off this year

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 26/12/2023 20:46

Yep, I can’t wait to get back to work, it’s quite relaxed during this period

brawnthesheep · 26/12/2023 20:46

I'm pt so take 2 days annual leave. Didn't always pre dc.

confusedlots · 26/12/2023 20:47

We have to have some cover in work so usually work out our annual leave between us. I chose to work tomorrow and then I'm off again until the middle of next week. I'd probably take it all off if I could, but I don't really mind working one day.

RosesAndHellebores · 26/12/2023 20:49

No. My sector closes. We are given grace days for it. However, I worked 55 hour weeks for the six weeks before Christmas. Whilst I don't have to do paid work, I do have frail close relatives to attend to and will be driving 1000 miles over five days and being dutiful.

Poblano · 26/12/2023 20:55

This year I have taken the period between Christmas and New Year, plus the rest of next week, as leave. Work is quite stressful at the moment and I think a fortnight off to reset will help.

Ambi · 26/12/2023 20:57

I've worked it for years, 1 company was because the boss was a workaholic and couldn't spend time with his family so kept the business open and made us all work despite all our suppliers and customers having a shut down at this time, the other companies have been in head offices retail so open even if work was quieter than usual. I'm now at a company that shuts down on the 20th and reopens on the 3rd every year. I appreciate it so much.

Flying24 · 26/12/2023 20:58

We are mandated to take it out of our annual leave allowance.

kikisparks · 26/12/2023 20:59

I have to work one day this week but I love having this time off, feels more relaxed and slower paced than any other time off. In saying that it is less relaxing with a toddler!

Purplerain0505 · 26/12/2023 21:02

I’m working two days as I wanted to take off extra days before Christmas instead.

I’m just at home though and it’s light duties, no-one is expected to be glued to their desks. It’s such an easy time to work and I guess it makes January a bit easier knowing I’ve sorted my inbox and anything urgent.

Same here..got to play the long game

IKnowAPlace · 26/12/2023 21:02

I usually work it now - WFH, tends to be quiet (although I have two pieces of work I've allocated to the time), not a time of year I really want leave so prefer to use the days another time.

Starseeking · 26/12/2023 21:03

My office is closed, so no, but they make us take it as annual leave, which is a bit off.

First time I've had an employer like that, as previously had the days off for free.

WashItTomorrow · 26/12/2023 21:05

Yes, and I worked the weekend of 23/24 and Christmas Day Monday. Have Boxing Day and Wednesday off, then back at work again Thursday. I asked to take some days as leave but I was turned down.
