Do you work the period of time between Christmas and New Year?

Do you work 27-30th, or take it off? Just curious. I’ve always worked it but this year wish I’d booked it off as Christmas has flown by

Usually no, as one colleague usually grabs the entire month to do overseas visits to family. It's a bit unfair as she always takes it. However this year I booked it early and she didn't go. Next year she will be though so I'll end up having to work it.

HerMammy · 26/12/2023 21:31

I'm in tomorrow - sat, off 31/1, back in 2nd. Have a week booked off in January

Krustykrabpizza · 26/12/2023 21:31

No, I work in education in an all year round office role but they close that week for everyone

this year, yes. I'm in a small team, only two people can be off at once, and so I took a back seat this year as had no reason why I really needed to be off. Plus I quite fancy taking priority for Xmas eve next year.

Could be worse - no one works on weekends or bank holidays.

Itsjeremycorbynsfault · 26/12/2023 21:38

I'm self employed but I choose to take a full two weeks off from 23/24 Dec until early January. It's usually the only time of year I get proper time off.

I love Christmas too and look forward to this proper rest all throughout the year !

5thCommandment · 26/12/2023 21:42

Office always closes between Xmas eve and first WD in Jan. I've taken a week off as well so go back on 8th. I'll be in the sauna whilst the kids are at school. Some real R&R

43ontherocksporfavor · 26/12/2023 21:45

Work in school so am off. DH works in print and they always close down too. But actually I’d be happy to work in between as I find it a bit dull after today.

PinkBuffalo · 26/12/2023 22:04

Yes back to work tomorrow I hate this time of year so may as well be at work being productive and use my leave for when I can actually do stuff

Pedallleur · 26/12/2023 22:04

No. We closed Christmas Eve and reopen 2/1/24. This irritates management types who who have worked in the private sector. I work for a Uni but the management somehow believe the time off is wrong/stolen/should be covered. Not by them of course.

Gnomegnomegnome · 26/12/2023 22:10

Yes, I don’t mind it though.

rainbowbee · 26/12/2023 22:15

We normally have the few days just written off. There is nothing to do anyway as everything to do with my job is on holiday. This year there is a new manager so we had to use up some precious annual leave to tick the busyboxes. 🙄I'm physically away so couldn't go into office anyway.

coxesorangepippin · 26/12/2023 22:16

Working that period this year.

Bit of a pain really, as it's going to be a busy one

Didn't have any leave left though

socks1107 · 26/12/2023 22:17

Yes I always work it, I'd rather take the time later when I want

SpikyHatePotato · 26/12/2023 22:21

Yes, get 25th Dec and 1st Jan off, that's it.

LumiB · 26/12/2023 22:24

Yes I'm off as its my birthday so don't want to be working. Some years I've worked and liked the quiet time allowed me to things of creative ideas as you sont have pressure of project work.

MargaritaThyme · 26/12/2023 22:28

Yes. I’m back at work tomorrow morning. This suits me well, as I really don’t want to use up any more leave than I have to at this time of year.

FrancisSeaton · 26/12/2023 22:29

Yes I took annual leave last week to or prepare for Christmas

festivetinseling · 26/12/2023 22:32

I always used to. Some years I booked time off but not always.

My current employer shuts down between Christmas and New Year so I get the time off. We do have to use our own holiday entitlement for it though.

alltoomuchrightnow · 26/12/2023 22:40

I always work it and am now, but 26th until the end
Hate this time of year
Too busy at work so can't take it off anyway (retail) but what a waste of annual leave it would be.. such a dreary time.
Roll on my usual 2 weeks AL in March..I'm a spring person

2chocolateoranges · 26/12/2023 22:43

My work is closed between Christmas and new year. We finished on the 22nd Dec and go back the 3rd jan. ds is the same. Dh doesn’t go back until the 8th . All our work places are closed over Christmas and new year.

SquirrelHash · 26/12/2023 22:44

Nope, I work in education

TragicMuse · 26/12/2023 22:47

My work closes between Christmas and New Year and we don't have to save A/L days to be off. It's a great advantage, we get a proper break with no having to negotiate who's off when, who get it or doesn't etc.

Newnameshoos · 26/12/2023 22:52

In education, we closed end of play on 22nd, not open again til 3rd Jan. We have to take the 7/8 days as annual leave. I'm taking until the 8th off so I can have a proper break.

Atre · 26/12/2023 22:55

Yes. Never have any annual leave left and am always skint so can't afford to do anything.

It's a pita though because the buses all run Sunday service so my first bus doesn't run to get to the second bus so I have to walk to the stop for the second bus. They don't give you a ruddy discount off your monthly ticket either, bastards.

Beckafett · 26/12/2023 23:19

I have done a mix but this year I'm working which is owing to a deadline which now has moved. I really need a break but as someone else has said, kids are knackered and over stimulated so for me this year I don't feel I'm missing too much quality time.
