Do you work the period of time between Christmas and New Year?

Do you work 27-30th, or take it off? Just curious. I’ve always worked it but this year wish I’d booked it off as Christmas has flown by

Yes I'm on duty rota

HamstersAreMyLife · 26/12/2023 21:06

I've taken 10 days off. I wfh and have worked it in the past but I feel I need the break. It's sometimes a good period to get lots of things done, other times it's hell, covering for others. I didn't want to do the juggle this year.

My office is closed, so no, but they make us take it as annual leave, which is a bit off.

First time I've had an employer like that, as previously had the days off for free.

Gosh, I’ve never heard of any workplace just giving you the extra days for free.

No but I work my second job but my main job is off for the week

Gulbekian · 26/12/2023 21:08

I have worked it for years. It's generally one of our busiest periods.

christmaspawpaws · 26/12/2023 21:09

Work, we can only have one person on annual leave each day and it was all full

Sidge · 26/12/2023 21:10

Yes, we’re not allowed leave over Christmas.

stargirl1701 · 26/12/2023 21:11

No, never. DH and I are always off for the whole 2 weeks.

I've been given a day for free out of 3, for instance, but had to use 2 days. I've only worked in one place that closed though, so usually I tend to work it, or some of it.

I'm doing 2/3 days this week, but I'm off next week.

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 26/12/2023 21:15

I'm working it, between my colleague and I we have to cover the office every 'normal' weekday (ie not the bank holidays). I prefer the lead up to Christmas off and she prefers the time after, so it work out well.

Beezknees · 26/12/2023 21:15

Work. Nothing much happens anyway so it would be a waste of annual leave, I'd rather be off when it's busy and get a break then.

jay55 · 26/12/2023 21:17

Am off. We have contractor furlough for 2 weeks over Xmas/new year due to code freezes etc.

I usually take it if I can as my birthday is between Xmas and new year.

susiedaisy1912 · 26/12/2023 21:18

Yes. Nhs 20 years so have always worked all over Xmas and new year. This year I actually had Xmas eve Xmas day and boxing day off so feeling very happy with that.

CeriB82 · 26/12/2023 21:18

I work. Local government and unable to take leave. Looking forward to it as i like my work and been off for 5 days and im bored of tv and food and games

Mum2jenny · 26/12/2023 21:20

Working tomorrow and Friday with Thursday off.

clary · 26/12/2023 21:21

DD works in a library which is closed for the week, so she has to be off, but they have to take it as AL which is not great IMHO.

I have usually worked in comms so am used to working over Christmas - have worked Christmas day more than once which is not great tbh. When I was a teacher of course I was off the whole time - but I found it a struggle to be ready as you are full-on, flat-out until about 22 Dec then wham! have you wrapped a single present? Grin

I have had roles where I got extra days off, but where I am now it's take AL or come in, so I have decided, as we have had a four-day run with the weekend, I will go in.

Looking forward to the quickest-ever morning commute tomorrow! (It's 26 miles and can take as much as 50 mins - hoping for 35 tomorrow :)

Fourecks · 26/12/2023 21:21

My work shuts down between Christmas and New Year. They used to give it to us for free, but now we have to take it out of our leave.

It's summer here so a good time to take leave anyway. The bustle of Christmas is over, and it's a lovely few relaxing days.

LollipopViolet · 26/12/2023 21:21

I'm working Thursday and Friday. I looked at how it fell and was happy with a 5 day break so didn't take any additional leave. I do a sport competitively so need to use leave for training and competitions as well as a summer holiday (if I can).

KThnxBye · 26/12/2023 21:22

Yes I do. I’m lucky to not work Christmas Day or New Year’s day. But I don’t get/am not entitled to annual leave so this year I just have Xmas day, Boxing Day and then New Year’s Day off. Back to work in the morning.

InAMess2023 · 26/12/2023 21:23

Used to but had family from abroad visiting the other year so took it off to spend time with them and loved it so much. Although this year my only plans are to blitz the full house, get back in the gym and watch/read some stuff I've never got around to. Luckily I get 33 days off plus bank holidays and only work 4 days a week anyway

Unfortunately before I left for Christmas the whole world decided they wanted a piece of me the first week back so I do keep thinking about how busy it's going to be instead of enjoying being off! 😬

reluctantbrit · 26/12/2023 21:23

Yes, like every year. I work for an internal investment bank and year end is one of the worst times of year for us, it‘s unusual to get permission to take time off.

We do wfh though to make it a bit easier for us. I can sleep in, have a nice breakfast and lunch with DH and don‘t battle the trains.

When we were office based we had food delivered, took it as easy as possible and had a lot of fun. Thanks to working on the 24th and 31st if it was a working day we got at least 2x 0.5 days in lieu as well.

mrsfollowill · 26/12/2023 21:24

My work, DH's and DS's all shut down (3 different places) but we all have to save 3 days leave and use it in between Christmas and New Year.
I love it as until 5 ish yrs ago my office had to be open for the 3 days so I would end up doing a day- normally the 29th or 29th. I used to hate it walking down the street for the bus in dark at 8am when the entire street seemed to be asleep- knowing my own DH and DS were included in that!
WFH was not allowed on those days either - even though we routinely did one day a week from home back then.

Whattheduck · 26/12/2023 21:25

I don’t work Tuesdays and Wednesdays so back Thursday 7.30 to 6.00 and Friday 8.00 to 3.30 then off until the following Thursday. No holiday left as I took 1 day last week I have toil but saving that for February

reluctantbrit · 26/12/2023 21:26

WashItTomorrow · 26/12/2023 21:06

Gosh, I’ve never heard of any workplace just giving you the extra days for free.

DH has the days off free. Which was a godsend as I always work and there is no childcare at all available.

But they are a small company and it was very much „keep an eye on your emails and have your laptops at home“ scenario.

Cattenberg · 26/12/2023 21:27

These days, I’m used to taking it as annual leave.

In a previous job, we weren’t expected to come in between Christmas and New Year, but the office was open for the few who wanted to. I set my alarm for a couple of mornings, then when it went off, I switched it off and went back to sleep. It’s hard to explain how glorious this was!
