I have a tendency to watch grim/misery filled things. I need something really uplifting/happy.

I absolutely love this. Never quite seen anything like it. Balm for the soul.

Genie is new out and was lovely. I love musicals - Cinderella and greatest showman are nice and easy watching. Amelie is an oldie but also fabulous.

Sleepless in Seattle . Excellent romantic comedy

Terminal with Tom Hanks (on Netflix)

doyouwanticewiththat · 26/12/2023 18:58

When Harry Met Sally does it for me every time

mangochops · 26/12/2023 18:59

Fried green tomatoes at the whistle stop cafe
How to make an American quilt
Don Juan De Marco
how Stella got her groove back

These are all 90s films but give me such happy feelings

WhatwouldyoudoPlease · 26/12/2023 19:00

If you like greatest showman def try Cinderella the musical - it’s my other easy watch. Pitch perfect, lala land, little miss sunshine…… the holiday also worth a shot!

pingusslappyfeet · 26/12/2023 19:07

Life by Ted Demme, starring Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence. It’s a really terrible story but ultimately says a lot about what keeps people going and where there’s human connection there’s a chance. Also a big fan of Hunt for the Wilderpeople and The Quiet Girl for the same reason. They’re all really sad but life affirming, occasionally funny and charming and show other people are our best hope

HelenFisksBrownSuit · 26/12/2023 19:35

Try this. Absolutely charming and hilarious:

Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016) ⭐ 7.8 | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

1h 41m | 12A

If you like Bollywood, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is great. I think any Bollywood film from that era, like pre-2010 or so is wonderful, colorful, creative, wholesome, funny.

Studio Ghibli films (a few are very sad so read reviews first) Almost all are very heartwarming and interesting.

All the Madea movies, just so silly and funny.

The Matrix movies are dark but also have a strong theme of hope.

The Stepbrothers is probably the best movie of all time. So incredibly hilarious.

FourChimneys · 26/12/2023 19:42

Not sure if it is quite what you are looking for but I loved Edie starring Shirley Hancock. Basically an elderly woman climbing a mountain but very heartwarming.

Jorvik1978 · 26/12/2023 19:47

Stardust is my go-to feel good film. It's just magical.

LesLavandes · 26/12/2023 19:50

The Holiday

garlictwist · 26/12/2023 19:54

I love the film Philomena with Steve Coogan. It's quite a dark story but very uplifting and strangely funny.

ancientnames · 26/12/2023 19:54

Personally, I think you can’t go wrong with a good kids film 😀. Guaranteed a happy ending!

Megamind
Spies in Disguise
The Paddington Films
Brave.

I also really like the Sorcerors Apprentice ( Nicholas Cage).

McQueensMuse · 26/12/2023 19:54

About time.
It's a bit of a sobfest at points but I find if I watch it when I'm a bit down it allows me a good cry and reaffirms to me what life is all about.

WhatFlavourIsIt · 26/12/2023 19:57

Eddie the eagle- always cheers me up

guinnesschocolatecake · 26/12/2023 19:58

Under the Tuscan Sun
Last Holiday

both focus on women finally taking control of their lives and living it to the fullest

EarringsandLipstick · 26/12/2023 20:00

Hmmm. Most of the recommendations here wouldn't do it for me at all - so I guess if depends on the individual.

For me, something to make me happy needs to easy viewing & whimsical, an invented world.

So my movie recommendations include:

Just Like Heaven (Reese Witherspoon & Mark Ruffalo)

Pete's Dragon (remake).

Christopher Robin

The Blind Side (Sandra Bullock) - a bit more problematic since the real-life court action

illiad · 26/12/2023 20:06

Little Miss Sunshine
Wonder
Everything Everywhere All At Once
Lion
Pride
