What felt like a treat as a kid...

But now seems like it really wasn't?
Me and DSis used to absolutely love getting to use our mum's bath water once she got out. It seemed even more of a treat as she didn't have bubble bath (?!)

Going to people’s houses who had heating.

GigiAnnna · 26/12/2023 15:56

Going to Mcdonalds was a birthday treat. After Eights were only passed around at Christmas and I was only allowed to take 1.

MuddledMadge · 26/12/2023 16:48

Using liquid soap. I think it used to be seen as quite posh.

AllAroundMyCat · 26/12/2023 16:58

Going to a friends house and drinking squash or fizzy , coloured pop.

Hummusanddipdip · 26/12/2023 17:08

Viennetta ice cream.
Always saw it as a posh treat ice-cream, somehow bypassed me that it came with the KFC family bucket for years 🤣

ALongHardWinter · 26/12/2023 17:29

Going out for a meal.

LunaNorth · 26/12/2023 17:31

Broccoli.
Imperial Leather soap.
Fresh orange juice.
Real butter.

IwishIdidntlikesugar · 26/12/2023 17:32

Angel delight

ArtG · 26/12/2023 17:44

Ball of butter dipped in sugar; would make me gag now I think.

sorrynotathome · 26/12/2023 17:45

I think you've asked the wrong question - these things were treats to us at the time. You mean "what seemed like a treat then but wouldn't be now?"

Back then, treats were a rarity - now they are a daily necessity.

hopeishere · 26/12/2023 17:45

A can of Coke. My sister and I used to get one between us!

Desecratedcoconut · 26/12/2023 17:47

Fresh orange juice was doled out in shot sized portions. I mean, really, how expensive could it have been?

flowerchild2000 · 26/12/2023 17:49

Grey Poupon mustard, I really thought it was only for the wealthy and totally out reach in terms of price. I only realized as an adult it's normally priced and pretty basic! I always feel fancy buying it though! 😂

I'm so sad they don't make it any more! I always saw the commercials as a kid and never got any. I've heard it wasn't even that good. I still want some though. The marketing really got us!

arewedoneyet · 26/12/2023 17:53

@flowerchild2000 they still sell it in lots of places

Yes! Branded cans were only for very special occasions. Fizzy drinks from the milkman made an appearance at Christmas but for the rest of the year, it was fruit squash only.

Balloonhearts · 26/12/2023 17:55

@flowerchild2000 It's still about. Tesco do it for about 1.50.

Mossstitch · 26/12/2023 17:56

Orange and soda water plus ready salted crisps I the back of the car whilst patents went in the pub.

In the UK?

thedementedelf · 26/12/2023 17:57

McDonald's was rare. We couldn't afford that frequently.

arewedoneyet · 26/12/2023 17:57

@flowerchild2000 yes, England

They do! I've seen it in Sainsbury's for a quid or so, we sometimes buy it for the sake of nostalgia
