What felt like a treat as a kid...

But now seems like it really wasn't?
Me and DSis used to absolutely love getting to use our mum's bath water once she got out. It seemed even more of a treat as she didn't have bubble bath (?!)

Yes having a step in Shower looked like a luxury. As was nice smelling shampoo (not the tar stuff that we thought was normal).

Having fish paste / crab paste sandwiches looked like luxury to 7 year old me. Little did I know!

Magic painting books. Grey print on pages and with water they turn a different colour.

Yes! I desired these so much. Completely magic!
Was delighted as a parent to find them for about £1.50 in The Works. Shame my kids are not arsed about them at all.

distinctpossibility · 26/12/2023 23:03

Post it notes were an unimaginable luxury to me. Ditto Tippex. My dad brought me back a block of the neon mini Post its from the USA once.

Surprised no one has said Lucky Bags... they were yellow with a weird.skateboarding turtle on the front? Usually contained a selection of party bag type toys and some of those sherbert stix. ETA and if you were related to a millionaire or just amazingly lucky, those big cones that grannies would bring back from Spain. Like lucky bags but exotic.

Ohthatsfabulousdarling · 26/12/2023 23:08

Fruit and vegetables.
Grapes and bananas I had, I feel so smug buying fruit and veg every time I go shopping now.
New clothes.. oh my god, new clothes made me feel like I was reaching celeb status!

bellsbuss · 26/12/2023 23:10

McDonald's, going to a cafe or a restaurant , fizzy drinks , takeaways, orange juice. Only 1 carton of Del Monte orange juice was purchased each week and we were only allowed one small glass each.

theduchessofspork · 26/12/2023 23:10

Anything like Wendys (!) McDonalds, KFV or Little Chefs. We lived deep in the country so we only got near them on long journeys and it all felt very blade runner. Also big service stations. There was big excitement at home when the village butcher started doing sausage and chips on a Thursday.

The ice cream parlour that did coke floats near my grandparents on the outskirts of London. See above. Also any sight of a city scape especially at night. I used to beg to drive through London rather than round it on the motorway.

Anyone who had a proper TV signal. We lived in a valley and it was basically multicoloured fuzz.

Chicken Kiev in a basket for the occasional Sunday pub lunch. My siblings had scampi because they lacked finesse IMO.

The new deli counter at the supermarket. A tub of chicken tikka was the height of sophistication when I was 13.

My warehouse ‘designer’ shirt.

Haagen Das ice creams on sticks, so glam in the 90s Tatler did advertorials on them.

theduchessofspork · 26/12/2023 23:12

Tiny hotel shampoos and soaps.

My dad bought them back from occasional business trips. So exciting.

CatWoman12345 · 26/12/2023 23:17

Little Chef on the way home from the Dentist - no other time !

Lying in Grandma’s bed with the electric blanket on (Devine !), and waking up to the teas maid.

A Cornetto out the freezer - usually hazelnut choc and dad’s IceCream.

lollipoprainbow · 26/12/2023 23:18

Coca Cola only ever bought at Christmas.

MissingMoominMamma · 26/12/2023 23:20

Orange or lemon sorbet at Grandma’s house.

Just being at Grandma’s house was a treat! Having an adult all to myself.

I'm so sad they don't make it any more! I always saw the commercials as a kid and never got any. I've heard it wasn't even that good. I still want some though. The marketing really got us!

You can still buy viennetta. There’s a mint one in my freezer as we speak.

Nitesaredrawinin · 26/12/2023 23:49

Heating, hot water, and a bar of chocolate with the Friday shopping. Kids don’t know how lucky they are these days.

MuddledMadge · 26/12/2023 23:51

Nestle Munchies

ChiNonFaNonFalla · 26/12/2023 23:58

Central heating
Shower (we had a jug)
Ribena dilutable juice
Magnums and soleros
Strawberries
Chinese takeaway
McDonald's
Having a car
New clothes (used birthday money)

TheChosenTwo · 27/12/2023 00:00

Sara Lee chocolate gateau on a Sunday! I think it must have come frozen and I’m sure I remember sneaking bits of frozen chocolate curls or flakes from the sides while
it was defrosting 😂

I'm in the US, but that is exciting to hear and something to look forward to ☺️

@flowerchild2000 honestly viennetta is so awful, it tastes of nothing. If you have some now it will leave you so disappointed. Leave it in fantasyland!

The mint one is lovely

daisychain01 · 27/12/2023 04:34

A gift box of Bronnley Bluebell fragrance soap and hand cream I got for my 10th birthday, I felt very grown up and thought it was pinnacle luxury. I never took it out of the box, and the soap lost its smell after a long time.

Errolwasahero · 27/12/2023 07:54

Smash! And Fray Bentos pies for dinner. Luxury! And Lucozade when you were ill. That orange celophane (sp?) certainly made all the difference.

Justleaveitblankthen · 27/12/2023 08:53

Camay soap.
My friend's family used it (we had the Lifebuoy, as a face and body soap )
I genuinely believed the Camay advert that claimed it would make you beautiful.

OldBeyondMyYears · 27/12/2023 09:40

Birds Trifle - we never had pudding apart from at Christmas, and it was always Birds Trifle 🤣 (and if my mum was feeling particularly adventurous she'd add a tin of 'fruit cocktail' - now that was PROPER posh!! 🤣)

Scrantonicity2 · 27/12/2023 09:49

Forget Vienetta, I remember when Walls Romantica came onto the scene. Little toffee balls on the top!

GellerYeller · 27/12/2023 09:58

Clothes… maybe something from M and S in the January sale -that ACTUALLY started in January- for parties. Otherwise mostly from markets, sometimes an indoor one where they had changing rooms.
I had a friend whose parents ran a grocery shop and they took her regularly to an actual shopping centre(!) for clothes from places like TopShop and Miss Selfridge.I grew up thinking shop owners lived like millionaires. Ditto the boy at school who had a range of Benetton jumpers. 😂

flowerchild2000 · 26/12/2023 17:56

In the UK?

Yes! Iceland did a biscoff version recently which was amazing.

BabyYoshke · 27/12/2023 10:04

Tongue haha. Thought it was food of the gods as a child. Now I think it’s food of the Gads and wouldn’t go near it.
