Am I a poser for wearing things that are outrageously more expensive than what I normally wear?

Happy Christmas to those who celebrate,

My question is:
although I have a great job that pays well and live comfortably however I'm not a someone one would identify as wealthy, I live very frugally (lucky to be able to put away a large portion of my income) and I don't shop often usually wear bargain stuffs and not ashamed wear them again and again sometimes for years. However when I really really love something (which happen extremely rarely) I would try my best to save up and buy them. Therefore over the years I acquired a Rolex, a set of earrings and necklace with colour stones similar to the watch that was over 100k quid (sorry for being crass, just trying to paint the picture better), and an bejeweled Judith Lieber clutch... literally the only expensive stuffs that I own. Wore them to formal occasions maybe over 20 times each already (in variations; sometimes the watch and earrings, necklace only, earrings and purse etc.) they look flashy and expensive but that's not why I bought them, purely because I like their appearances.

But recently I read an comment online (not here but on other site, a fashion forum) that what I've been doing is actually 'wrong' because I don't normally wear items that are in that price range or socialize with people whose median income think those are acceptable purchases (eventhough my friends generally dressed in more expensive clothes than I do and they buy new clothes all the time) do you think I'm a poser?

Yes.

SausageCasseroles · 25/12/2023 18:31

Yes

ItsMyPartyParty · 25/12/2023 18:32

Buy and wear what you like and can afford.

Obviously, there are times when it is crass to wear extraordinarily expensive things. But to appropriate occasions, don’t let anyone else tell you what to do.

Of course not, if you like them. The posers are the people who think they can judge what is "right" or "wrong" for a person to wear.

Doggymummar · 25/12/2023 18:34

I imagine people think it fake if it doesn't match your lifestyle. Rolex aren't that expensive but £100,000 for jewellery I imagine would look fake with your Primark joggers.

AlwaysGinPlease · 25/12/2023 18:35

100K set or watch, do you have a photo?

TwentyThreeFifteen · 25/12/2023 18:36

Britannica Dictionary definition of POSER. [count] disapproving. : a person who dresses or behaves in a deceptive way that is meant to impress other people.

whatevss · 25/12/2023 18:37

You can buy and wear whatever you like, and others can think whatever they like about it.

I think you've got a screw loose paying a hundred grand for a piece of jewellery when you aren't very wealthy.

But why do you care?

Christmassss · 25/12/2023 18:37

Enjoy your nice items and don’t overthink it.
I have a 50k bag collection and wear average priced clothes, I don’t care what people think.

SleepingStandingUp · 25/12/2023 18:39

Depends.

Are you just carrying your clutch or shoving it into everyone's faces to tell them how expensive it is and giving it it's own photoshoot on Insta?

If you're normally in high street clothes wouldn't assume it was real anyway, just a good copy.

Hillrunning · 25/12/2023 18:39

I dint fully understand what the word poser is supposed to mean but, if I knew you, and saw you wearing anything more expensive than some houses I would think you were a twat.

nottaotter · 25/12/2023 18:40

If you like something wear it and enjoy it definitely! I have a few expensive things that I wear and have never thought of myself as a poser, maybe because I still dress in a causal way.

theduchessofspork · 25/12/2023 18:41

No. Wear what you want

GalileoHumpkins · 25/12/2023 18:42

Why do you feel the need to tell strangers how much you've spent on something? That's sad but I'm not sure if it makes you a poser.

pickledandpuzzled · 25/12/2023 18:42

There are no rules on who is allowed to wear what. If you like it, and you buy it, then wear/use it!

It doesn’t become more or less acceptable according to what else you wear.

I judge the people who want to judge you.

jays · 25/12/2023 18:45

No! People try and gate keep everything these days! You’ll get shamed for everything if you look hard enough, absolutely wear what you love and stuff everyone who has a problem with it!

imho99 · 25/12/2023 18:47

If you are generally down to earth with your dressing, I doubt people even notice / think it’s real.

WonkyFeelings · 25/12/2023 18:47

Jesus, wear what you want and have bought with your well earned money.

whiteshutters · 25/12/2023 18:49

Maybe they think your bag is from Amazon's glitzy lot?

ValuableLimeLesson · 25/12/2023 18:49

I don't think I'd know, tbh, so no, I wouldn't say you were a poser - unless you told me how much they cost during casual conversation at a party, in which case, I'd be a bit like Hmm

NameChangeToday80 · 25/12/2023 18:51

I get it OP.

My general "style" (if you can call it that) is fairly plain, not cheap, but mid range classics and basics. I like very neutral clothing.

I also like my Hermes and Bottega Venetta bags, and my 1970s Rolex. My Gucci sunglasses.

They may not be to the same degree as your jewels and Rolex... but I sometimes think that it's a bit incongruous to wear a £15 pair of trousers, and £350 sunglasses.

The reason I don't feel like a poser is that I don't really think about what anyone else would think of those things, they're just things I loved, and could afford at the time of buying them.

And I am never sorry to put on those sunglasses.

Almondmum · 25/12/2023 18:52

I wouldn't think you were a poser. But I wouldn't know they were expensive unless you told me. I probably wouldn't even spot the word Rolex on your watch unless you deliberately wafted it under my nose.

paisley256 · 25/12/2023 18:55

I wouldn't give it another thought op, it's entirely up to you what you wear.

Inauthentic · 25/12/2023 18:57

I don't think you are.

If you are honest in your post.
You bought them purely for esthetic reasons.
Not to signal your economic status.

ConcreteSky · 25/12/2023 18:58

The watch was not £100 grand lol but the necklace and earrings were (Van Cleef & Arpels)
