What was a hit and what was a miss?

Ds (8) favourite present was a £10 lava lamp. Loves it to bits. Doesn’t have anything he doesn’t like.

DD(10) loves everything she got, though I personally reckon the cookeez makery was a bit of a let down. The magic mixie was better

Hits here were the Lego wildflower bouquet and book nook for 19yo.
A pile of manga books for 17yo
New phone for 14yo

NorthernChinchilla · 25/12/2023 17:02

I get DH a practical yet stupid present each year.
He was genuinely thrilled with his gold pineapple candle snuffer (once he'd worked out what the hell it was!)

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 25/12/2023 17:04

Massive hit - Gave DM (81) a record player. We are having a brilliant time listening to her old vinyl.

No misses so far, but a 3d printed fidget dragon from etsy has been a surprise hit with both dds (age 10 and 12).

Was that from Turtle Creations?

We got one... And oh my!! It has been the clear runaway hit for my dragon mad DD! It was a complete punt to order it not knowing whether they were good quality or not, or if the other buyers reviews could be trusted etc etc but it was ace!
It was a present she had no idea she was getting either, so also wondered if she'd like it so her delighted reaction was a real treat!

MissyB1 · 25/12/2023 17:07

Hit for ds was his beats headphones.
Hit for Dh tickets to back to the future musical.
Hit for me Givenchy L’interdit perfume.
No misses - phew!

StragglyTinsel · 25/12/2023 17:08

I got a dress from mint velvet which is lovely but there’s been an error in the factor and they’ve sewn on two different sizes of arm. So one arm is far too tight. I’ll need to exchange it.

Its a nouveau riche thing

What bollocks.

Simonjt · 25/12/2023 17:56

ChalkWitch · 25/12/2023 16:54

Oh is that when you do presents? I hear it’s a bit nouveau riche…🤣

I don’t think that exists in Sweden.

Its something on the life in the UK course my husband did.

Its a nouveau riche thing

It’s very definitely not. The more U one is the later and smaller the presents. The nouveau rich are tearing into thousands of pounds worth of present piles at 6am Christmas morning. The poshos are opening a singular pack of tissues and a whoopee cushion just before bed 😂.

DD 19 loved a night light in the shape of a cute smiley toaster that cost a fiver and a £1 light up bottle, less bothered with her (expensive) tap shoes that she needs for her theatre dance course as her old ones have fallen apart.

My daughter got the toaster too! It’s adorable!

Bean bags were a hit with 8 and 3 years olds.

A hit was also the Stanley thermos. I was going to get a knock off but really glad I got the stanley one

DH bought me the Stanley travel cup - it's perfect, love it.

DC are happy with everything thankfully. They didn't really ask for anything this year so everything was a nice surprise. Particularly 13 year old who has been really thrilled with his Dope Ski jacket, salopettes and beanie hat. He has two ski holidays in early 2024 and we are off to the snow dome tomorrow so he's super pleased.

PandaChopChop · 25/12/2023 20:37

Popping back to also add on the Harry Potter pop up diagon alley book.
It's absolutely beautiful! Very last minute purchase with no idea what it would be like but DD (and me cos I'm a huge HP nerd 🤣) is entranced!

Quiregirl · 25/12/2023 21:23

JRR Tolkein Letters from Father Christmas book
Granite ice cubes for the kids who constantly make a mess in my freezer and on the kitchen floor making and retrieving ice cubes. Excellent win there and just a last minute stocking filler.

Quiregirl · 25/12/2023 21:23

Tolkien dammit!

The DDs (15, 10) were thrilled with bead sets and have been busy making bracelets for going to see Taylor Swift next year most of the day. DD15 very pleased with a hardback copy of Emma by Jane Austen (a last minute purchase) and DD2 not taken off her Grinch Santa hat all day. They've liked everything they've been given and have been spoilt. One of our neighbours gifted us a marble rolling pin (WTAF)!

I'd love a marble rolling pin

soupmaker · 26/12/2023 08:36

It's yours if you want it @KitchenMess

Natsku · 26/12/2023 08:39

Turns out OH's new phone was a miss, but I am very happy to take it off his hands if he doesn't like it Grin

Oh, do you have a link for this 💛?

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 26/12/2023 12:36

Well the other big hit for my dd (12) has been the silicon ice cube tray - they are sort of finger shaped so you can put fruit etc it in them.

It cost me about £2 from the local cat rescue selling page.

Mountainhowl · 26/12/2023 17:21

Hits

  • custom hoodie (my brother works in a print place so got it at cost 👍) with my son's YT logo on, he is so happy with his own 'merch'
  • playdoh factory, just the basic one with the handle you push down and make spaghetti etc with, constantly out
  • oodies (off brand) for everyone (my mum and both kids), don't think they've come off much since they put them on!

Miss

  • Santa paws biscuit for the dog (she doesn't play with toys), she's eaten about 1/3 of one of two biscuits so they're clearly shite 😂

Mammyloveswine · 26/12/2023 22:29

I got a box of minecraft swords/figured/axes/shields and other shite off marketplace for a tenner.. forgot to even wrap it... Kids are obsessed!!!

Big one got a minecraft laptop he is buzzing with too...

Is it an English thing just to do stockings then leave the rest for later? I’d never heard of doing this till I joined MN

Yes we do that and then go to church and return to open the main presents
