What was that noise in our house?

All sitting round with drinks, chatting, nibbling on crisps etc. Then there is this great almighty bang! It sounded like a firework went off inside the conservatory. 95% sure the sound was from inside the house.

We have lots of fairy lights in glass bottles and Christmas lights switched on. We weren’t in the kitchen so couldn’t have been fridge freezer, oven or extractor fan. Not in the living room so couldn’t have been the chimney.

The wind is still blowing strong at 55mph so maybe it was one of the window units. All I can think is, that or maybe the battery exploded in one of the fairy lights. Turned them all off and isolated the electricity to the conservatory and we have moved rooms now

But what on earth was it? I can’t help but worry - it was so loud, and really gave us all a fright!

Did anyone put a glass bottle of something fizzy in the freezer to cool down and then forget it?

JustKeepSlimming · 24/12/2023 21:44

Bin blowing over outside?

igivein · 24/12/2023 21:45

Bird flying into the window?

Bird flying into the window?

Sounded more like a firework type noise

Bin blowing over outside?

Wasn’t a thud, was more of a crack type noise

We have just had exactly the same!! Woke our 16mo up who now won't go back to sleep and 3 adults have just gone round the property to find the source...which we can't! So bizarre!!

😂😂
this has reminded me of coming home absolutely wrecked from a long day at work and a gym class, putting dishes in the dishwasher to go to bed, heard what I thought was a firework and started a long rant to my pets about inconsiderate people letting off fireworks…

checked the local news the next morning and someone had been shot in the entry behind my house - literally about 20ft from my kitchen!!

now try to assess firework sounds more carefully…

Oh no, that’s so weird. Do you live in a place name beginning with W?

Quite seriously though you need to go and check the conservatory to see if you can work out the sound - if a battery has exploded then it’s a fire hazard!

Turned off the electrics and can’t see anything, it’d only be an AA battery so surely fine

Santa. Obvs.

Wine stopper popping off Prosecco in fridge (this has terrified me twice!)! Picture falling off wall? Slate (or ariel?) falling off roof?

tv aerial snapping on the roof. (Well that’s was our mysterious bang in the last storm). Or something outside which has hit a window/door, like a recycling box/bag/bin. Plenty of those this week.

Elderflower14 · 24/12/2023 22:01

We had a similar story when ds2 was a baby. Boiling hot summer day. Came home from church, carried ds into the house left pram in the garden . DH left his cigs and lighter in the garden. Ten minutes later there was a massive bang outside. Everyone in our terraced row came out. Our neighbour was a blacksmith and was worried it was one of his gas cylinders. After about 20 minutes fruitless looking DH decided he wanted a fag. His fags were there but not his lighter... His lighter had exploded in the heat. Shards of plastic were embedded in the shed and wooden fence either side of ds's pram... Absolutely terrifying!!

Osheo · 24/12/2023 22:03

I just have absolutely no idea what it was and I’m getting quite worked up worrying about it.

Can’t see any evidence of what it would be. Fuse switch is off, to the room we heard the noise in. Battery powered Christmas lights all switched off.

This is safe, right? Worried we’ll go to bed and wake up to a fire, or something. Worries exacerbated because it’s Christmas Day and all!

An aa battery can start a fire in certain circumstances so I would double check them all tbh. Then go around outside with a torch

Calmdown14 · 24/12/2023 22:04

You don't have any disposable lighters for candles etc?

We once had one to light the woodburner as the proper one was out of gas. Husband left it in wood basket on hearth (but still a good way from fire).

It exploded, probably as had very little in it. We couldn't work out what it was and we were in room til we found plastic embedded in concrete plinth above it.

I now have an electric lighter!

USaYwHatNow · 24/12/2023 22:05

@Osheo no, but we're south east/west border if that narrows it down 🤣 baby has finally settled and we're still none the wiser. We've just moved though so maybe we're still getting used to the noises... definitely loud!

No nobody smokes or vapes so we don’t have any lighters just matches, which weren’t in the room
