What was that noise in our house?

All sitting round with drinks, chatting, nibbling on crisps etc. Then there is this great almighty bang! It sounded like a firework went off inside the conservatory. 95% sure the sound was from inside the house.

We have lots of fairy lights in glass bottles and Christmas lights switched on. We weren’t in the kitchen so couldn’t have been fridge freezer, oven or extractor fan. Not in the living room so couldn’t have been the chimney.

The wind is still blowing strong at 55mph so maybe it was one of the window units. All I can think is, that or maybe the battery exploded in one of the fairy lights. Turned them all off and isolated the electricity to the conservatory and we have moved rooms now

But what on earth was it? I can’t help but worry - it was so loud, and really gave us all a fright!

An aa battery can start a fire in certain circumstances so I would double check them all tbh. Then go around outside with a torch

We did, couldn’t see anything outside. Surely batteries can’t start fires if they aren’t plugged in or switched on and they’re in a dark room overnight

Pop bottle. They sometimes pop and scare the life out of me.

mrsfollowill · 24/12/2023 22:08

Have you got an cans of beer or coke in the fridge? we had a can of coke explode in the fridge once - the mess was unreal! I had turned the fridge up extra cold as it was full so the can had got pushed to the back and frozen.

We were sitting downstairs at night once and there was a ridiculously loud bang upstairs. Couldn't work out what it was. Could only see in daylight that the outer pane of the bathroom window had got a small 2cm-ish hole in the corner. No idea what hit it hard enough to cause that sort of noise and only do a relatively small amount of damage to the window but it was very loud.

yorkshirebird2382 · 24/12/2023 22:11

I've had the same tonight and it was my candle....the glass cracked. I have candles on all the time and it's never happened before....do you have any candles on anywhere?

MrsMoastyToasty · 24/12/2023 22:13

We had the inside pane of glass in a double glazed window crack due to thermal shock. That made an incredible noise.

Was it a loud type crack noise?

I think my main worry is it could be something electric and really don’t want any fires.

Hoping it’s this, rather than something electrical

I had a large roof tile slide down and off the roof - it was next to the leaded valley where the roof of the extension meets the main roof so I’d check for a missing tile - it could also be a ridge tile. Hopefully it’s nothing other than a sound that has carried from a nearby property.

Could be this I guess. With the wind especially. If it had been something dangerous/likely to start a fire it would’ve done so when we heard the bang, right? It was around 7pm. All electrics off at the fuse since.

If there's no room in the fridge we store spare beer in a drawer. Once one of those exploded and scared the crap out of me. So loud! And messy.
Hope you track it down OP.

I was going to suggest a roof tile. We had one slip off and it was very noisy.

MrsMoastyToasty · 24/12/2023 23:04

@Osheo it did!

Dodie66 · 24/12/2023 23:06

Happened here too. A really loud bang like a shotgun. We were on a FaceTime call with my daughter and she heard it too
it was a battery in a candle arch. When we look it had leaked a bit and kept fizzing.

What did you do with it in the end? Did you just leave it. Worried with someone saying it’s a fire hazard, want to make sure everyone’s safe overnight

I replaced the batteries. All works fine now 🙂 if you don’t know which battery it is take them out for now. Happy Christmas 🙂🙂

DatingDinosaur · 24/12/2023 23:27

Clap of thunder?

Lightning strike nearby?

There doesn't have to be a storm for either to happen.

inappropriateraspberry · 24/12/2023 23:30

Something falling into the bath or shower? Shampoo, bath toy etc?

It was definitely in the conservatory, nothing fell I don’t think as it was more of a crack sound - just like a firework had gone off

I know you're certain it was the conservatory but have you checked other rooms too? When we had a noise like that it was our oven glass. It just went kaboom. I think because I'd cleaned it with some strong cleaner earlier in the week.

insearchofabra · 24/12/2023 23:38

I don't suppose you have any mousetraps around? I heard a huge bang the other night, near the area where I have a mousetrap set. I heard mouse footprints first and then this almighty bang and then ......silence😬

Would that explain your noise at all?

reallyworriedjobhunter · 25/12/2023 00:12

Pane of glass in a window cracked? Sub floor sunk and cracked a tile? Has the conservatory moved position in relation to the house?

sheselectric24 · 25/12/2023 00:33

I will be part of the conservatory plastic cracking or bending because of the wind. The noise they make is really loud and quite unique.

Ours expands and contracts in the heat and cold and it can be startling.

A very large mirror once cracked in the conservatory due to the heat and cold and that sounded like a bomb had gone off.

They just seem to be noisy rooms

sheselectric24 · 25/12/2023 00:33

It will be sorry

christmaspawpaws · 25/12/2023 00:34

I had this and it was a washing up brush (plastic one) that exploded Confused
Strange, and very loud
