Do you have potato croquettes on Xmas Dinner?

Growing up in the 70s and 80s (in NE England) my family always had potato croquettes (as well as roasties) on our Xmas dinner, and so did my DH's family (in Yorkshire). We didn't have them at any other time of year, so I'm guessing it must have been inspired by a succesful pre-Xmas advertising campaign when they were a relatively new product. We still have them every year now, so we're passing on the tradition to our kids. Anyone else?

I've never heard of anyone having croquettes with their Christmas meal, but then I have never known anyone who has mashed potato wot their Christmas dinner apart from people on Mumsnet!

We have roast potatoes only , 9 people and allow 3 /4 roasties each at least . I do them in a large roasting tin . Other veg include Brussels , carrots, roast parsnips, red cabbage. I do remember potato croquettes but they were for what my Dad called TV dinners !

According to Wikipedia, the croquette is an 18th century French dish, so far too sophisticated for TV dinners 😁: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Croquette

No, never at Chriatmas.

We had them on Saturdays occasionally.

See that seems like a bizarre concept to me, only because I'd never heard of it until this thread!

But I like cauliflower cheese with Xmas Dinner which some people think is an abomination

Also no yorkshires.....which only go with beef, not Turkey.

Is multiple potatoes a Northern thing, or maybe Irish, or perhaps Irish American??

Roast potatoes are not common in America as far as I can ascertain. There's usually just mash. There are no words to express the disappointment I experienced when I first had Christmas dinner chez MIL when I moved here. I made up my mind to stop going to hers as soon as possible just to avoid mash (and not great mash either - too gloopy, more creamed than mashed).

At home in Ireland, we always had roast potatoes at Christmas, Easter, and St Patrick's Day. And properly-made, delicious mash frequently.

I have only served mashed potatoes (alongside roasties) if some of the parboiled spuds were too soft for roasting, and I remember one year two of the DCs had loose teeth and couldn't manage roasties.

Frozen food on Christmas dinner? Certainly not!

You can make them fresh. My mum never bought them, and I don't either.

How can a type of potato "lower the tone"??

Any sort of potato, except for home made roast potato roasted in goose fat would definitely lower the tone of my Christmas dinner!

DeathStarCanteenGal · 26/12/2023 20:31

my DBro took the Percy Pig potato shapes with good humour, and DD enjoyed them
I did manage to knock up a few home made croquettes for DBro as well though

Oh, you would hate us then, because we also had frozen jumbo prawns in our starter and frozen petit pois (steamed, with mint of course), plus vanilla ice cream with our home-made Xmas pud. 😋

@missinglync we also have frozen prawns for prawn cocktail! I have to use the tiddly ones though as relatives don't like the larger ones
