Do you have potato croquettes on Xmas Dinner?

Growing up in the 70s and 80s (in NE England) my family always had potato croquettes (as well as roasties) on our Xmas dinner, and so did my DH's family (in Yorkshire). We didn't have them at any other time of year, so I'm guessing it must have been inspired by a succesful pre-Xmas advertising campaign when they were a relatively new product. We still have them every year now, so we're passing on the tradition to our kids. Anyone else?

Hasselback and boiled new potatoes here (which no-one really eats, they're for boxing day potato salad). No mash, and definitely no Yorkshires!

WhamBamThankU · 24/12/2023 18:00

Awww man. I haven't had croquettes since I Was about 10 and now really want some with spaghetti hoops! Absolute commoner, I know.

PixiePirate · 24/12/2023 18:26

No that’s a new one on me but I love that both you and DH remember it from your own childhoods and have carried it forward with your family. These are the little quirks and family traditions that personalise Christmas celebrations and bind us with shared nostalgia. Happy Christmas x

Wow, that sounds like the best breakfast ever, what a fab idea 😋

It’s a beautiful thing. We go to M&S or waitrose at 6/7am when they open, do a supermarket sweep for Christmas dinner, grab steak and croquettes then go home and feast!

HunterHearstHelmsley · 24/12/2023 19:14

Bloody hell, I haven't had potato croquettes in years! I'm blaming @missinglync for my last minute One Stop order as I NEED them for tomorrow now.

caringcarer · 24/12/2023 19:30

No. We have roast and mashed potatoes.

Underthesea65 · 24/12/2023 20:05

No, we have mash, roasties, dauphinoise and baby garlic potatoes

ToothFairy2023 · 24/12/2023 20:12

Yes also in the north and have passed the tradition onto my teens.

user701 · 24/12/2023 20:23

Pil always do croquettes. I refuse since I dislike them. We are hosting this year and have dauphinois and hasslebacks.

turkey, ham, dauphinois potatoes, hassleback potatoes, red cabbage with apple, parsnips, carrots, pan fried brussels leaves with chestnuts and cauliflower cheese. Two types of stuffing (pork sage and onion and cranberry, chestnut and orange), pigs in blankets and Yorkshire puddings.

I might have over catered..

DeathStarCanteenGal · 24/12/2023 21:59

Parents always had them. The year they forgot DBro stormed off from Christmas dinner
I'm hosting him and my other DBro tomorrow (both parents dead) and haven't been able to source any croquettes. As an alternative, at my 12 year old DD's suggestion, I've bought M&S percy pig potato shapes.

maisiedaisy64 · 24/12/2023 22:05

In Rep of Ireland and Christmas isn’t Christmas without them. It’s definitely just our family that I know of that has them, haven’t heard anyone else doing them. Homemade though.

And this may be controversial but have croquettes, roasts, mash and dauphinoise! Small amounts of each obviously. If we can have 4 types of veg why not 4 types of spuds??!

mondaytosunday · 24/12/2023 23:46

Nope never (I was born in the 60s).

Treefusis · 25/12/2023 00:00

@missinglync no, but I bloody wish we did, I love them.

LonelynSad · 25/12/2023 01:01

Frozen food on Christmas dinner? Certainly not!

Yellowcakestand · 25/12/2023 01:06

South west here. No croquettes. Do you have them with gravy on??
My mum does both boiled and roast pots though

TortoisePlayingMinecraft · 25/12/2023 01:11

NW here, no croquettes growing up. Didn't know they were a thing until this post. I'd be as likely to serve them for Christmas dinner now as I would turkey dinosaurs 😬

charabang · 25/12/2023 01:22

Born late 60s. Grandma always did a potato croquette alongside roast potatoes and mash with our turkey dinner. I thought they were posh as they only appeared on the plate once a year.

Saschka · 25/12/2023 03:19

Nope, but my roast potatoes are amazing, so we have no need of croquettes.

We do have cauliflower cheese though. Family of veggies, we have about 8 different vegetables (potatoes, carrots, sprouts, parsnips, red cabbage, cauliflower cheese, mashed swede, broccoli). Basically every vegetable that anyone in the family likes is available. And veggie cocktail sausages, Yorkshire puddings, and a bit of nut roast, though honestly the huge array of vegetables is the star attraction.

Fraaahnces · 25/12/2023 03:25

I’m doing what my family refers to as “fancy potatoes” for lunch. Mash made with beef stock, put in a casserole dish garlic herb butter on top. (I did rosemary and parsley) Then on top, cubed potatoes that have been smooshed around is smoking hot duck fat then hurled back into the oven. Given that it’s 35’C here, I think I deserve a medal for putting he oven on at all.

Of course! 😋 And the leftovers go in the Bubble n Squeak on Boxing Day.

Yes potato croquettes here. I buy the Marks ones with cheese in them though I usually only manage 2 with my roast potatoes. Bought some with bacon in them in Marks now in freezer as having a different dinner today. I use them all year round if doing a small roast during the week.

How did the Percy Pig shapes go down with DB @DeathStarCanteenGal ?

ThirtyFlirtynThriving · 26/12/2023 16:28

What in the Aunt Bessie’s am I reading?!

No! That’s atrocious! 😭

ODFOx · 26/12/2023 17:13

Those of you who only have roast potatoes with your Christmas (or and roast) dinner: how many people at the table? If I did only roast potatoes I'd need to feed people in shifts! I do 3 pieces of roast potato and a spoon of mash per person. That was 4 trays of roast potatoes yesterday.

Oldraver · 26/12/2023 18:27

Yes we used to have them, they were almost special status but realise now there just an everyday accompiament

My Mum also used to do onion rings, she would cook them on top of the stuffing balls to save space 😅
