Do you have potato croquettes on Xmas Dinner?

Growing up in the 70s and 80s (in NE England) my family always had potato croquettes (as well as roasties) on our Xmas dinner, and so did my DH's family (in Yorkshire). We didn't have them at any other time of year, so I'm guessing it must have been inspired by a succesful pre-Xmas advertising campaign when they were a relatively new product. We still have them every year now, so we're passing on the tradition to our kids. Anyone else?

Potato Dauphinoise with Christmas dinner 😱
On the one hand just no but on the other how delicious!
Do you also have cauliflower cheese? Or just the one creamy dish?

Yes, I also have Cauliflower cheese which is a very close 2nd favourite thing to potatoes. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it's honestly my ides of heaven.

Having them for the first time tomorrow - spotted them in M&S and couldn't resist! Ham and cheese croquettes. No turkey here, I'm having sausages with roast potatoes, bacon rolls (blankets minus pigs), Yorkshire puds, croquettes and some nice greens. Still haven't decided on pudding.

We're having croquettes along with roasties and dauphinoise 😋

Waitrose sell fresh ones and they are bloody lovely.

Nope, my mum put alphabet potatoes on our roast when she ran out of spuds once though.

Mash and roasties together here.

AdaColeman · 24/12/2023 14:29

Nooooo!

JanglingJack · 24/12/2023 14:31

No, and the same goes for sweetcorn!

No I have never heard of this. Some uni friends from Northern places liked roasties and mash with any roast. I thought that was odd!
Just roasties here.
Enjoy your croquettes OP, it's nice to have family traditions.

No mash! What's wrong with you lol! It's roasties and mash!

ArgueWithATree · 24/12/2023 14:36

My husband actually requested them this year. Apparently as kids they only ever had them for Xmas dinner. I've never heard of it before but I do love a croquette tbh so looking forward to it!

TomeTome · 24/12/2023 14:37

Only roast potatoes here, nothing creamy and definitely not croquettes. They were one of my dread foods when I first moved to the uk. Like wagon wheels I think you either love them or hate them.

janfebmarchapril · 24/12/2023 14:38

Never heard of this but I'd be very happy with this tradition 😂

tara66 · 24/12/2023 14:39

No never! Would lower the tone (sorry!).

How can a type of potato "lower the tone"??

Ilovegoldies · 24/12/2023 15:06

No but I know I would like them. I'm going to get some on boxing day.

Hyacinth Bucket is alive and well 🤣. Saddo.

KnittedCardi · 24/12/2023 15:10

No. Just roasted. I've never heard of anyone having mash as well, either. Cauliflower in bechamel, not cheesy.

Luckingfovely · 24/12/2023 15:10

Whaaaaaaat?? Pototo croquettes with turkey gravy? I feel faint...

strawberry12345 · 24/12/2023 15:11

On a different note who has Yorkshire puddings with Christmas lunch? It’s a must here (northerners in the south)

trulyunruly01 · 24/12/2023 15:11

No croquettes, but many many Yorkshire puds.
Built up like the ferroro rocher pyramid

trulyunruly01 · 24/12/2023 15:12

Ooh great minds think alike

oh no yorkies thats a carb too far .😀

KnittedCardi · 24/12/2023 15:13

Also no yorkshires.....which only go with beef, not Turkey.

Is multiple potatoes a Northern thing, or maybe Irish, or perhaps Irish American??
